Hi James, I am responding to your post via our list, so that others who might have the same question can read it. When I was in Scotland, researching, I came across this article and found it most interesting that even after 70 plus years after Robert Fulton , of the Steamboat fame, died people were still trying to piece out the family background on him. My ancestor James Fulton, born 7 August 1739, left Scotland in 1782 and landed in America in 1783. He started the Fulton Settlement of Bethel NY. He purchased around 850 acres ( as his tombstone states: " An aged man, I made my way from Scotland to America, and after a many a toilsome day, I purchased land wherein I lay".) If you are interested you can read all about James and I @ our web site: www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm\. In his memoir, James stated he met a young man by the name of Robert Fulton, going up the North river, this young man was working on some form of steam navigation and after talking with one another they concluded they shared a common ancestor Henry Fulton of Derry, Ireland ( according to James Fulton, Henry Fulton was his half uncle and that same Henry Fulton was Robert Fulton's grandfather. Hope you are looking forward to part 2.
