Folks, Just wanted to show how some of ROOTSWEB's features can help us to glean information on a topic, such as the surname OXLEY in Loudoun Co, VA and the surname FULTON in Hilltown, Bucks Co, PA that was mentioned in some of the previous notes on this list. I will briefly show how five of ROOTSWEB's many features can be used: I) ROOTSWEB USGENWEB(to search geographic areas) II) ROOTSWEB WorldConnect GEDCOM files (to search surnames) III) ROOTSWEB Mailing list archives (search surname or geogr.lists) IV) ROOTSWEB Surname List V) ROOTSWEB Surname Resources I) ROOTSWEB USGENWEB (provides geographical search) --------------------------------------------------- http://www.usgenweb.net/thestates.html Select Graph or text list of states, Select PA, Scroll down select to Bucks County and select it - Search surnames (no Fultons) - History of Boroughs and Towns: not too much on Hilltown which is located on the Bucks Co/Montgomery Co line just 12 miles northwest of Abington and Moreland in Montgomery Co, PA. Notice that the spelling is Hilltown rather than Hillstown, but it is a common error to add the extra "S". When doing a search using a computer, you will need to search both spelling variations. There is interesting data on Doylestown Township, which is just southeast of Hilltown Township - talks about the "Walking Purchase" or the "Great Walk of 1737" which was used to establish new boundaries for Bucks, CO, PA. - Notice the "Boards" for Bucks Co (a feature provided by ROOTSWEB for all counties and mailing lists, which as more volunteers post their data will provide a tremendous source of online information focused on specific areas of interest. These "Boards" are categorized into Query, Bible, Biography, Deeds, Obits, Pensions, Wills. There were no pertinent Fulton or Oxley entries on the Bucks Co Boards. - Notice the list of Historical/Library addresses - very handy information for writing or calling for more information. II) ROOTSWEB WorldConnect GEDCOM Project ---------------------------------------- http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ Search the GEDCOM data Currently Online Search for Surname Oxley, Given name Henry, Hit Search button Notice there are several entries for Henry Oxley b May 1699 in NJ d Mar 1777 in Loudoun Co, VA Go to the tenth entry submitted by oxeyf by double clicking on Henry Oxley's name to see the family group sheet as follows: Oxley Genealogy 664 total entries, last updated Tue Mar 21 08:47:48 2000 Linda Spears <lindalou@citznet.com> ID: I204 Name: Henry Oxley Title: III Sex: M Birth: 11 MAY 1699 in Burlington County, New Jersey Death: 17 MAR 1777 in Loudoun County, Virginia Burial: Gum Farm, Loudoun County, VA Religion: Ketoctin Baptist, Loudoun County, Virginia Father: Henry Oxley Marriage 1 Mary Everrit b: 16 JUN 1697 Married: 1722 in Hunterdon County, NJ Children 1. Everit Henry Oxley b: 11 SEP 1767 8. Jesse Oxley b: 4 DEC 1752 in Virginia I also checked out the INDEX (at the bottom) for FULTON entries, but did not find any. But Henry Oxley's grandchildren Bethaney Oxley b 1750 who marries a Sanders (perhaps Barthaney Sanders mentioned in the will is her daughter) and Brittain Oxley b 1755 could be the Oxley mentioned in the will that Carolyn Proctor found that mentioned Robert Fulton witnessed the Will of Henry Oxley of Loudoun Co, VA, on 6 February 1776, and Oxley's Will was proved in Court on 13 October 1777 by "R. F. Fulton", Brittain Oxley and Ann Oxley. Notice the surnames the children and grandchildren marry such as Steven/Stephens, Howell, a lover Thomas Harris, Sanders, Rice, etc. If you study where some of the children and grandchildren of Henry Oxley settle, you will see areas such as Belmont Co,OH; Coshocton Co,OH; Clinton Co,OH; Rush Co,IN; Culpepper Co,VA. I was excited when I read that Henry Oxley was from Burlington Co, NJ because remember the David Fulton of Cheltenham Twp advertised his lost horse in the Penn Gazette in 1756. The horse was brought from Bordontown, NJ which is in Burlington, Co. (Fulton-L discussion list Subject:Fulton and Wyncoop or Wynkoop in MA/NH, NY, NJ, PA, VA Dated Fri, 21 Jan 2000) To find this note, go to the ROOTSWEB mailing list archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Specify for Name of List: fulton-l, Click on SUBMIT QUERY button For QUERY specify the keyword "21 Jan 2000" [keep the quotes around the date] Select year 2000, Hit SEARCH button ROOTSWEB will show you all the messages posted on that date, along with their subjects. Select FULL on the entry with the appropriate Subject listed. II) ROOTSWEB Mailing List Archives ---------------------------------- In this section we will search for FULTON in the OXLEY mailing list and in the PABUCKS mailing list (which is the mailing list for Bucks County, PA). For a full transcription of Henry Oxley's will, go to the ROOTSWEB mailing list archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Specify for Name of List: oxley-l, Click on SUBMIT QUERY button For QUERY specify the keyword FULTON, select year 1999, Hit SEARCH button Select FULL on 1 of 3 entries shown: "LOUDOUN COUNTY WILL BOOK B Pg-57 At a Court held for Loudoun County September 8th 1777 This Inventory and appraisement of WILLIAM LANE decd was return'd to Court and rderedvLo be recorded. pp.188-189 IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I HENRY OXLEY of Virginia in Loudoun County being weak in Body but of Sound Memory blessed be God do this Day February 6th in the year 1776 make and publish this my last Will ..." etc. I also searched the PABUCKS mailing list for Fulton, but did not find any appropriate data. The search for Hilltown provided me with other surnames in the area that may be useful to establish a community of people. IV) ROOTSWEB Surname List -------------------------- http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi Specify Surname OXLEY and Location VA, Hit SUBMIT button. The list gives me the migration paths of OXLEY who go through VA and the email/address so I can contact those researchers to see if they have come across a Fulton connection (other than the witness in Henry Oxley's will which I can mention to them). Have you checked out the FULTON entries on the ROOTSWEB Surname list lately ? Make sure your entry is listed. This list now permits you to add a comment field that allows you to summarize the details of your research. I just updated mine by using the "Add or Edit Your Surnames" feature on the first page where you specify the search. V) ROOTSWEB Surname Resources ----------------------------- http://resources.rootsweb.com/~clusters/surnames/index.html The Surname resource page for individual surnames provides "one stop shopping" for some of the surname functions discussed above. I looked up the Oxley Surname Resource Page because I wanted to search the individual "Boards" for any Fulton leads, but there were none. To search just the specific board that is attached to the surname, double click on the icon QUERY, BIBLE, BIOS, DEEDS, OBITS, PENSIONS, WILLS. The search box just below the banner of ICONS is a global search that will allow you to search all the entries for all the Boards for all the mailing lists and USGENWEB pages in the world. If you look at the FULTON Surname resource page at http://resources.rootsweb.com/~clusters/surnames/f/u/FULTON/ you will see only a few queries listed and no real entries in the other categories, but this will change over time. These boards are a relatively new feature and ROOTSWEB last week created the feature that will allow me to link any entry posted on these "Boards" to automatically be posted on the fulton-l mailing list. That will be a very useful function, once I get it to work. Have fun using these ROOTSWEB tools. Roberta R.
