    3. Folks, Enclosed below is an entry that appeared on the NorthernIreland mailing list that outlines the Fultons that are documented in the Griffiths Valuation in Antrim, Northern Ireland. The Griffith's Valuation Survey was compiled between 1848 and 1864. All the land of Ireland was surveyed for the purpose of establishing the local tax rate to be paid by each landholder or leaseholder. The information collected included the name of the landholder or leaseholder and listed the townland, a description of the property, the landlord, and the annual tax amount. Although it does not cover all inhabitants of the area, it is used a a census substitute. A map of the parishes in Antrim is at: http://proni.nics.gov.uk/geogindx/antr.htm If you click on the parish name, a list of townlands in that parish along with the Ordance Survey Map reference (OS Map Ref) is listed. If you had a Townland name but did not know where it is located, the IreAtlas Townland database is located at: http://www.seanruad.com/ You can enter the parish and county and it will show you all the Townland names in that parish. Or you can enter the townland to find out where it is located. The name of the landlord can help you to determine what estate records for that landlord may exist. See data at: http://proni.nics.gov.uk/geogindx/town.htm#antrim which is the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland database on Townlands by Major Estates. With this information, you can do some cursory "armchair" genealogy and plot the parishes where the Fulton surname occurs on the parish map. Notice the Fultons are not evenly distributed in the county Antrim, but occur in several clusters: a) Northwest Antrim on the border of counties Londonderry and Antrim along the River Bann. In this context, these Fultons could be associated with families from Coleraine and Dunboe. b) Southeast Antrim in the Lisburn/Belfast area and along the River Lagan. There is a lot of information in the archives on the Lisburn Fultons. A map of Northern Ireland showing major towns is at: http://www.fortunecity.com/bally/sligo/93/maps/ni_towns.gif will help you see how Antrim fits into the bigger picture. Roberta R.
