    1. [FULTON] re:Thomas Fulton, Augusta Co. and Margaret Cawley
    2. The Fulton's of early Augusta County, VA. pose difficult puzzles. On the web site listed below is listed information leading to a conclusion that Margaret Cawley was the wife of Thomas Fulton who died in Augusta VA in 1755 and who them married John Cawley who died Feb. 10, 1775 (see Chalkley, Scotch-Irish in Augusta Va vol3, p 140). Margaret Cawley left a Will in 1776 naming no children but leaving bequests to grandchildren William and Margaret Fulton of SC, son of Thomas, also naming grandchildren William and Joseph Gamel and naming a brother William Patton. The connection of Margaret Cawley as the wife of Thomas Fulton who died in 1755 in Augusta VA is possible (his wife name was Margaret), but I think it may be he daughter who married Thomas Fulton who went to SC, and it was not Thomas Fulton who was her son. Can anyone shed any light on the following questions? 1. In Chalkley, vol. 3, p. 497 is a deed that refers to John Cawley and Margaret of Staunton dated 9/27/1769. The deed refers to "John Cawley now husband of late said Margaret Gamwell". Vol. 3 p. 538, deed 3/19/1774, refers to John Cawley now husband of Margaret Gamwell who was wife of Joseph Gamwell". No reference to her being a former Fulton. Seems likely that Margaret Patton married Joseph Gamel. She may also be the same Margaret who was married to James Woods of Frederick County, VA. who died in 1746. In Chalkley, vol. 1, p. 54 is a deposition dated 8/21Margaret Woods to be the wife of James Woods. In Chalkley vol. 1 p. 345 in an entry dated August 1767 refers to John Cawley and Margaret his wife, late Margaret Woods. The afore mentioned Chalkley vol 3 p. 497 entry refers to a deed to Margaret and Joseph Gamwell dated 5/22/1760. I can find no entries directly referring to Margaret as formerly married to a Fulton. It would appear that Margaret Patton married James Woods who died in Frederick VA 1746. The afore mentioned deposition entry of 1752 refers to he still as Margaret Woods. She should have been married to Thomas Fulton by then (refer to listed marriage date of April 4, 1751 on attached web site). It seems more likely that Margaret Patton-Woods then married Joseph Gamwell and then John Cawley and it was he daughter that married Thomas Fulton who went to SC. 2. The Will of Margaret Cawley (see web site and Chalkley v. 3 p. 145) leaves legacy to grandchildren William and Margaret Fulton and names them as children of Thomas Fulton. It would seem logical and likely that Thomas is still alive or custom would have indicated referring (as does her brother William Patton's will in 1793) to Thomas as deceased. If Thomas was her son, why leave property to grandchildren and not to her son. Seems more likely that Thomas' wife was Margaret's daughter and that her daughter was likely deceased and therefore Margaret left a legacy directly to her grandchildren. What do you all think? 3. A marriage date is listed on attached web site for Margaret Patton and Thomas Fulton of April 4, 1751. Can anyone provide a source for this? I can't find it. It is speculated that the Thomas Fulton who sold land to Joseph Gamel in 1764 was the son of Thomas and Margaret Patton Fulton. Something can not be correct here since if Thomas and Margaret were married in 1751, their son Thomas could have been no more than 12 years old in 1764 and not of age to sell land. Also if Thomas and Margaret Patton Fulton were married in 1751 and this is the same Thomas who died in 1755, that is a very short time to leave two children. 4. If my speculation is so that the Thomas who died in 1755 was born in Northern Ireland in 1694, he would be very old to be marrying and having two more children between 1751 and 1755. 5. Does anyone have data from later records to indicate when William and Margaret Fulton, children of Thomas who went to SC were born? In summary, my guess is that Margaret Cawley is not the Margaret who was the wife and administratrix of Thomas Fulton's estate in 1755, and that Margaret Cawley ne' Patton was never married to a Fulton, but that her daughter (probably by James Woods?) did marry a different although undoubtedly related Thomas Fulton. All comments/corrections are welcome. 3. The many, many, Thomas Fultons in the Augusta County area are nearly impossible to sort out at this late date. The loss of some of the records by fire doesn't help. I Really need to go through the Thomas Fulton manuscript papers and notes again and verify whether the oldest Thomas Fulton was married to Elizabeth or Margaret. May be difficult to prove. The 1751 date may be for an entirely different Thomas Fulton. One really needs to have a map in front of them when they are working on this as some lived in Rockingham, some Rockbridge, and some in Augusta, all of which was at one time Augusta. Can't do it now and type. I don't have all of my records up here right now and a busy July ahead so won't be dragging any more up. Still stored in the basement. The different Fultons were separated by Mrs. Katherine Bushman who lived in the area and knew the area, exactly where Calf Pasture was and when and where the Rockbridge division was. She is now deceased so can't recheck with her on it. One major clue here is the fact that Thomas Fulton sold land in 1764 to his brother-in-law Joseph Gamel when he went to S.C. At one point, William Patton mentions his sister. (The Daughter Margaret's name was found in one of the land transactions of the Gamel's). 1. This Thomas can't be the one who died in 1755. 2. This Thomas can't be the one born after 1751. 3. One Thomas went west and was never heard from again. 4. One Thomas, born in Amherst Co., married Susan Kisenyer (Rev. War records) moved around to different states after the war. 5. Etc. 6. Etc. In my notes I see where Margaret Fulton married Ferdinand Kincaid. This is the family that moved to Gallia Co., Ohio.and where at least one Kincaid connection comes in . Maybe Roberta has a postem note on the right info here. They have clarified things for us before. Norma Jennings
