    3. Continuing... The Fultons of New York Jane Osterberg, a descendant of William and Martha (Crawford) Fulton of Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY, through their oldest son, Isaac W. Fulton, shared her family research with Roberta Hirth. Now you know the source behind the second Post-It note in Roberta's Fulton database. Based on information supplied by Mrs. Osterberg, Roberta learned that these Fultons lived in New Windsor, Ulster County, New York, prior to 1790. William and Elizabeth Fulton, adjacent households in Ulster Co, New York, migrated together (before 1800) to Ontario Co., NY. And John Fulton on page 494 is part of the Pennsylvania group... And that's where this research project took a really interesting turn. Roberta wrote: "Pat -- according to Florence's notes, William Fulton is age 26-45 on the 1800 US Census. I asked her to recheck her information and she confirmed that there is a "1" in column 4, age 26-45." So I compared my information to the information sent to me by Clark and Ernie. Sure enough, I had copied it wrong (or had I?) (Not to worry, I doubled-checked all the census index entries that I've sent to you and all the other entries matched!) Despite the differences, both versions show a 1 in column 5, "age 45+". So where did Florence get her information? To settle the matter, I visited the Denver branch of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and pulled out Microfilm "M32", roll 28 (Ontario County, New York). I turned to page 496 and ... this is a very difficult record to read. It's dark and clear enough, but it is a photograph of two pages from a bound book that has been cut apart and laid out flat. The names and the first three columns for males appear on the left-hand side (even number pages, 492, 494, 496, etc.) while the remaining columns appear on the right-hand side (odd number pages). Unfortunately, the two pages are not properly aligned and the record is ambiguous. There are 26 rows of names on the left, and 26 rows of numbers on the right. William Fulton is in row 14.
