    3. Happy New Year, Irene! Irene Fulton of California helped me out regarding all the wives of James Fulton who died 1772 at Hopewell Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. She tactfully noted that I made a teensy mistake. (God bless you, Irene.) James Fulton had one wife named Mary and two wives named Jean. [If you're taking notes, go back to Part 7 and correct this line: James Fulton, d 1772, wife Mary. to James Fulton, d 1772, wife Jean/Jane. And then fix this sentence in the next paragraph: James Fulton, d 1772, wife "Jean", was born in Scotland.] Irene was part of a foursome that followed our Fulton Reunion bus all over Northern Ireland back in 1995. We referred to them as the "tail gate party" and finally ditched, er lost, them somewhere in Ayrshire, Scotland -- only to learn that they had stumbled upon the genealogy bonanza of a Fulton lifetime. The descendants of James Fulton traveled from America to Scotland to read their ancestor's birth, baptism, marriage and death records! It was a great find, and no one ever questioned their decision to leave our party. And, yes, this James Fulton married THREE times. >From Irene: One small correction in your informative report on the James Fultons of York County PA. James Fulton who died 1772 had 3 wives: m1 Mary Willson married 31 Oct 1710 m2 Jean Lermont married 21 Mar 1727 m3 Jean Smith married 26 married 1736 Irene adds this postscript: "This is the James Fulton in the IGI as being born ca 1701. Needless to say the person with that guess did not find him with two other marriages." (Agreed) How many of you have ever considered that your elusive Fulton ancestor had three different wives? And who could guess that wife 2 and wife 3 were both named Jean? If you can trace your Fulton ancestry to Hopewell Township, York County, PA, you may want to consider this James Fulton. The Will of James Fulton, 1772, identifies his wife Jean and 7 children: (1) John Fulton (2) James Fulton (3) William Fulton (4) Janet Fulton (5) Andrew Fulton (6) David Fulton (7) Hugh Fulton The Will of Jean Fulton, 1777, Jean (Smith) Fulton, identifies only the last three children: (5) Andrew Fulton (6) David Fulton (7) Hugh Fulton, deceased This Fulton family traveled from Scotland to America circa 1755. Andrew Fulton sold his interest in his inheritance and moved his family to western Pennsylvania. Brother David Fulton stayed in York County where he died in 1826. David Fulton was the father of 11 children (2 wives) and because David died intestate, you will find extensive records on his children in the Orphan's Court records. James Fulton was a founding member of the Guinston Associate Presbyterian Church, one of the first and the absolute last "Associate" Presbyterian Church in America. (Merged in 1858 with the "United Presbyterian Church.") As for the four older children? Irene and I have been discussing them for years. I think at least two of them came to America, but I defer to Irene who is truly the authority on this line. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado
