Reference: Note dated Thu, 26 Aug 1999 09:07:49 From "Jennifer Fulton" <jenibear@swbell.net> on Subject: Fultons Scotland>PA Dear Jennifer, Your note stated: >>James Fulton (1791-1850) married Mary Ann McMullen. James was descended >> from John Fulton (1713-?), who was born in Scotland and emigrated to >> America in 1753 settling in Norristown twp, Chester Co., PA >> My Fultons also spent time in Centre Co., PA and in Illinois. My question is that I cannot find Norristown twp, Chester Co, PA. Is this really the Norristown (a small city, not township) in current Montgomery Co, PA. I know county boundaries change. Montgomery county was created in 1784 from several counties inlcuding, Chester Co. And it looks as though Norristown (the city) would have been in Chester Co in 1753. But as I said, I can find a city by the name Norristown, but not a township, although back in 1753 perhaps it was a township. Please help to clarify. What was the source of your information ? Also how did you link the John Fulton 1753 in Norristown, PA to the Centre Co, PA area later ? It may be significant in the recent discussion on the list about the David Fulton 1756 of Cheltenham Township, (former Philadelphia Co, current Montgomery Co, PA. Norristown a city. Norristown and Cheltenham township are only about 12 miles apart. If you look at a current map for Abington (a city, township and an important church in those day), Cheltenham is about 6 miles miles south of Abington, Upper Moreland township and Lower Moreland township encompass an area less than 6 miles Northeast of Abington, and Norristown(city) is about 12 miles WNW of Abington. As you can see, the Abington area is sort of centrally located in reation to these areas. I am assuming you have already searched the FULTON-L archives for the McMullen connection (one note I have enclosed below). Also of interest were some abstracts from Ann Irwin posted 22 March 1998 from the Pa. Archives 5th series Vol 7 page 97 Undesignated Militia that lists members of the Bedford Co Militia in 1782 including Capt. John Fulton Capt. Thomas Davies (anyone know if his surname has significance to the origin of the county name Jo Daviess Co, IL - the area where Peter McMullen Fulton is born in 1869.) Private Michael McMullen, Private Peter McMullen Lt. William Beatty (another surname we see with Fultons in many areas) Notice by studying geographic areas and the community of people in those areas, some interesting leads may develop. This is especially critical when these folks keep moving around. So many of the Scots/Scotch-Irish of this time period were constantly moving to areas of perceived better opportunities. Roberta R.
