Continuing... The identification of two distinct Fulton families living in Ontario County, NY, is very important. While Clark & Ernie are primarily interested in identifying their own Fulton ancestor, the rest of us are wondering if there is any family connection between these two seemingly separate Fulton families. The Pennsylvania Fultons were founding members of the Seneca Presbyterian Church, organized in 1807. The church records identify John Fulton as a founding elder (22 Oct 1807) and James Fulton as a charter member. Two of the known Pennsylvania Fulton brothers, Hugh Fulton and James Fulton are buried in the Seneca Presbyterian Church cemetery (Seneca No. 9 Cemetery). The third brother, John Fulton, who was living in nearby Gorham Twp in 1810 and 1820 disappears. (And another research project is born!) Cemetery Records Hugh Fulton d 22 June 1846, age 82 and wife Rebecca Fulton d 10 March 1846, age 71, buried in same plot along with Rebecca Fulton d 20 June 1842, age 31. James Fulton d 9 May 1849 age 80 and wife Hannah Fulton d 20 Aug 1839, age 55, buried in same plot along with Margaret Fulton d 20 Sept 1841, age 39. Joseph Fulton d 15 April 1862 age 80 and wife Isabella d 15 June 1863 age 84. Florence Wolfe found abstracts of the Hugh Fulton estate papers. These papers name the following sons: James Sidney Fulton (James S. Fulton, father of James P. Fulton) Joseph Fulton and wife Isabella John S. Fulton Samuel A. Fulton -------------- H E R E I T I S ! ---------------- Joseph D. Fulton is the probable grandfather of Cornelia M. Fulton, b 1837, and her brother James Wesley Fulton, b 1841, children of James Fulton (p 107) of the 1840 US Census for Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, PA. (Lost? Refer back in Pt 6 where I suggested that if we assume this man married at age 20 in 1835, and grew up in the Seneca area, then he could only be a son of one of the two following Fultons found in 1830: 269 Joseph D. Fulton 2 0 0 1 1 0 // 1 0 1 0 0 // 0 0 Seneca 281 Hugh Fulton 4 0 0 1 0 1 // 0 1 0 1 0 // 0 2 Seneca We've eliminated Hugh Fulton. That leaves Joseph D. Fulton. <<<<<<<<<< J O S E P H D. F U L T O N >>>>>>>>>> Who is he? Joseph D. Fulton appears in the 1820 and 1830 census of Seneca Twp. Roberta writes: "At Salt Lake City, Florence was helping Ernie and Clark by photocopying a half dozen deeds on this Joseph D. Fulton and wife Margaret who we think had nine living children at the time of his death. ... The Joseph D. Fulton deeds are all in the city of Geneva, which ties in with the birthplace of James Wesley Fulton. Geneva village is in the current township of Geneva which split off from Seneca township in 1872... >From the Joseph D. Fulton deeds from 1842 through 1844, but not recorded until 1847, it appears that his children were settling the ownership of land after his death. Florence and I have pieced together the following family unit... 1. Joseph D. Fulton (owned land in village of Geneva) + Margaret 2. James M. Fulton <--------- James Fulton, p 107, 1840 2. William Fulton 2 + Hannah 2. George S. Fulton + Fanny 2. Charlotte Fulton + Andrew Quakinbush 2. Lewis D. Fulton "of Philadelphia" in 1844 2. Joseph Fulton "2nd town of Canandaigua" in 1847 + Elsa - ------------------------------- My theory? Joseph D. Fulton married a daughter of Cornelius Marrs. Joseph's eldest son, James M. Fulton is probably James "Marrs" Fulton and he, in turn, named his first daughter "Cornelia Marrs Fulton" in honor of this man. Wow, that's a wild guess. Or is it? - -------------------------------- By the way, the "Null Hypothesis" regarding the two separate Fulton families is that there is no relationship between the Fultons of Pennsylvania and the Fultons of New York. Therefore, if we find inter-marriages or deed transfers between these two families the hypothesis is FALSE and there IS a positive correlation, er connection.
