    3. Happy New Year to our extended Fulton family! It looks like we have all successfully "rolled over" to the new millenium. I am happy to report that my DOS-based genealogy software displays "1 Jan 2000" and Roberta's Post-It note database still sticks. I've been given the "OK" to share the rest of our Ontario County genealogy saga. Our beloved Webstress Hirth writes, "No need for me to preread your new installments -- go ahead and post them. Folks are home for the holidays and will have time to study and enjoy them." Besides, Roberta says she is "slightly 'groggy' from getting to bed after 3am last night after a New Year's Eve party." I thought I saw her on TV celebrating in Times Square! Or was it Rio...? * * * * * Continuing... Who was the father of James Fulton who appears on Page 107 of the 1840 US Census of Seneca Twp, Ontario County, New York? What do we know about James Fulton (p 107) in the 1840 US Census? You need to go back to the bottom of Part 3 where you'll find the exact household information extracted by Clark & Ernie. (In Part 4 we eliminated the James S. Fulton household.) James Fulton (p 107) was reportedly 20-30 years old (b 1810-1820) and there was a 20-30 year old female living in the house, probably his wife. There were two children under 5 years old, a boy and a girl. Estimating 2 years per child, I'd guess that James Fulton married in 1835. If we further assume that he was 20 years old when he married, we're looking for a male born in 1815. Which Fulton household has a male age 15 in 1830? Because of the odd age categories, we have to look for any household with a male in either column 3 or 4. 1830 US Census index, Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY (Accel. Index, 1977) The 13 age categories for males and females are: und5 5-10 10-15 15-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 70-80 80-90 90-100 100+ Page Males Females 055 James Fulton 0000000100000 // 1000100100000 061 Hugh Fulton 0021000010000 // 0001000200000 061 Joseph Fulton 0010101000000 // 0001101010000 068 Joseph D Fulton 2211001000000 // 1010010000000 Well, at least we can eliminate one household, James Fulton, p 055 (no young males). That still leaves three possibilities: Hugh Fulton, age 60-70 (b bet 1760-1770), 3 males in cols 3 & 4 Joseph Fulton, age 40-50 (b bet 1780-1790), 1 male in col 3 Joseph D. Fulton, age 40-50 (b bet 1780-1790), 3 males in cols 3 & 4 Because Joseph Fulton and Hugh Fulton appear on the same page, it is possible that they are related (father and son?). Joseph Fulton and Joseph D. Fulton are the same age which is probably why one uses his middle intial. Let's see if the 1820 US Census index adds any information. Now we're looking for a family with a male age 5, that would be column 1. 1820 US Census index, Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY (Accel. (Sigh) I think this is where Clark and Ernie checked out. Now it is true that I have no evidence at this point suggesting that James Fulton (p 107) on the 1840 Census was even living in NY prior to 1840. However, if I "assume" he was born and raised in Seneca Twp, I can narrow our focus to 2 Fulton households in Seneca Township: 269 Joseph D. Fulton 2 0 0 1 1 0 // 1 0 1 0 0 // 0 0 Seneca 281 Hugh Fulton 4 0 0 1 0 1 // 0 1 0 1 0 // 0 2 Seneca That's about as far as I can go without more information. (Which I have). In the meantime, you can look over the 1810 and 1800 census index entries that I copied. (You never know, it might come in handy someday -- gulp, that's the kind of thinking that started my Fulton database 20 years ago!) 1810 US Census index, Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY (Accel.
