Here's a wonderful tidbit sent by Margaret Dequine. (Small world, isn't it?) "My gggrandmother, Sidney Howard Nelson Davison, was reportedly the first white child born in Geneva Ontario Co. I have a book called, Genealogical Gleanings Abstracted from the Early Newspapers of Penn Yan, Yates County, New York - Compiled by Dianne Stenzel 19991. Item 780 is as follows: Joseph D. Fulton, killed 4 Jul 1842 at Geneva, Ontario Co., during the Independence Day fireworks celebration. Mr. Fulton was standing near a box of fireworks, which was somehow ignited by a spark. When box exploded and Mr. Fulton was so badly burned, he died within a few hours. (12 Jul 1842)" Just a new element to add to the mystery!!!" Thank you, Margaret! - --------------------------------------------------------- Where does Joseph D. Fulton fit into the picture? Is he part of the New Yorkers or the Pennsylvanians? The New Yorkers are on the first 3 pages of the census and the Pennsylvanians "John Foulton" are 3 pages from the end. The two families started out geographically separated. 1800 US Census, Seneca Twp, Ontario County, New York I've written this list based on photocopies of the original 1800 US Census. These are the households as they were enumerated: Starting from the top, first page of Seneca Township (p 492): William Smith Leonard Smith Josiah Smith Solomon Gardner Elizabeth Fulton <----here's Elizabeth (with male 10-16) Jonathan Chapins William J. Fulton related to William Fulton? Apparently not. On 13 Dec 1825, an indenture was signed between the "heirs of William Fulton" and Philip Gregory. The heirs, who sold part of Lot #50 containing 60 acres, were identified as: Isaac W. Fulton and wife Hannah Thomas C. Fulton Abraham S. Fulton Ira Lockwood and Elizabeth [Fulton] his wife Ellison Fulton Robert Fulton, deceased None of these names appear in the 1830, 1840, or 1850 Census suggesting they left Ontario County. We know that Isaac W. Fulton settled in Locke Twp, Ingham Co, Michigan. Their son, Robert Fulton, b 1819, in NY, was named for the deceased brother, Robert (suggesting he died before 1920.) By the way, I found the death record for this Robert Fulton, son of Isaac, on line through the Gratiot County, Michigan, web site! At this point, I think we can eliminate William and Martha (Crawford) Fulton as the parents of Joseph D. Fulton. Poor Joseph. I'll always think of him as Joseph who died on the 4th of July. Sort of like Thomas Jefferson Fulton who was born on the 4th of July, 1776. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado
