    1. JOHN FULTON OF Lanarkshire
    2. Forrest Fulton
    3. ----------------- To Bill, Roberta and other Fulton Researchers: It is my belief that the John Fulton that Hugh Ramsey Fulton's book is about is the son of the James Fulton who died in York Co PA in 1772, will made 1769. James is the immigrant ancestor of my husband Forrest Fulton. My reasons are: We know James had sons John, James, William, Andrew, Hugh and David and a daughter Jennet/Janet. >From the Bible that James brought with him dated 1599, there are birth dates with the given names rubbed off. (I've never seen the Bible but York County Historical made copies of some of the pages in 1947 when the Bible was in the possession of Earle Fulton). There is enough that I've matched the names with the Old Parish Records of Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs and Fenwick. There are two births 1714 and 1716; these have no matching records in the Parish Records. The other births have been matched up. The following is what I've found: John b 29 Jun 1714 - from Bible, ---- Foulton, assumes John was born before Jennet Jennet b 15 Jun 1716 - from Bible, ---- Foulton James b 6 Dec 1727, Kilmars William b 10 Sep 1729, Kilmars Mary b 23 Apr 1731, Mains of Rowallan Archibald b 10 May 1733, Mains of Rowallan Andrew b 31 Oct 1736, Fardall Hill Hugh b 30 Jan 1738, Fardall Hill David b 9 Aug 1742 - from Bible, no Church record James named the children in his will John, James, William and Jennet who received money; then he named his sons Andrew, Hugh and David. When his then wife Jean Smith died, she named Andrew, Hugh & David in her will. We know immigrant James was married 3 times: James & Mary Willson married 31 Oct 1710 Kilmars Parish James & Jean Larmont married 21 Mar 1727, James of Kilmars, Jean from Kilmarnock James & Jean Smith married 26 Jan 1736, Kilmars & Kilmarnock Parishes, Jean's father of Burnhead "parech" of Fennick John Fulton married Helen Ritchmont 10 Jan 1744, Kilmars. I believe this is John of Chester Co PA. John named his son James since this line named the oldest son after the father's father; Eleanor and Helen seem to be interchangeable; the marriage of John and Helen is close to Hugh Ramsey Fulton's 1743. When John married Helen he was a dyster from Kilmars. None of their children are in the Parish Records of Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs, Fenwick. James Fulton went between Fardall Hill, a knob in his day about 3 or 4 miles West of Kilmarnock, now four football fields, and the Mains at Rowallan, the local castle. According to the map it's about 4 miles from Kilmarnock to Kilaurs, Kilmaurs to Fenwick about the same. The 1745 time period was when the Burgher and the Antiburgher Churches were breaking from the Presbyterian Church. This seemed a commonplace happening so that may be the reason there are no baptisms for John's children and James' last son David. There are baptisms for the daughter Janet/Jennet in the 1730s, but none after, and I know she was still in Crookedholme in 1754; her husband William Steven was named in the Seizen Records with his brother. It seems to me that these records indicate a strong possibility for John of Chester Co PA to be the John, son of James the immigrant who came ???? We now know he was much older than we first thought. He's in the IGI as being born ca 1701. I don't think so. Irene Fulton

Although I am not directly related to your John Fulton family, I am interested in this family for two reasons: 1) Potential origins in Lanarkshire, Scotland 2) Early settler of MD and Southeastern PA Here are some suggestions. 1) Family's potential origin in Lanarkshire, Scotland: Hugh Ramsey Fulton places the birth of several of the children of John and Eleanor Fulton in Lanarkshire. Just southwest of Lanarkshire is Ayrshire, an area of substantial Fulton activity in the late 1200's to present. Bernard Butcher has been providing us some primary and secondary source documentation on the Paisley Fultons (check the archives for this information for general background information.) 2) Have you looked in the Old Parochial Registers to determine if you can find the birth of John's children in Lanarkshire, Scotland or the surrounding counties ? 3) Have you researched the records in Maryland for evidence that they lived there for about 7 years somewhere between 1753 and 1762 when they moved to Chester Co, PA ? Or have you looked for the birth of John in 1755 in church records of Maryland or bordering churches in PA or Delaware ? 4) Have you researched some of the families listed as the elders in the Presbyterian Church of Oxford that Hugh Ramsey Fulton lists on page 4 ? From the archives I am sending you a separate note about a William FULTON d 1816, resided Ayrshire, SCT+Lancastrer,PA+Cecil Co, MD, wife=Jean that is dated Tue, 2 Sep 1997 14:41:51. Also I will send you some of the notes on the Richard Fulton and Alexander Fulton lines. You may see something that helps to tie together these early Fulton lines. Do you have a descendancy chart of your family that we could put on this list ? It might help others make connections to this Fulton family. Thanks, Roberta R. 3. Some time back someone was asking about Henry Fulton a descendant of Abraham Fulton. I knew the Fultons here were descendants of Henry. My computer crashed a few weeks ago and I don't have access to my old e-mail messages at this time. However, in going through some of my old notes that are unrelated to our branch, I did run across info on Henry Fulton whose descendants settled in Louisa County, Iowa where I live. If I recall Henry Fulton was a minister. Following are the family notes I found: Henry Fulton m. 1)Rebecca Jack by whom he had Abram, died in Columbus City, Iowa; John; Jane; and Ellen. He m. 2) Elizabeth Taylor by whom had Elizabeth and Rebecca. He m. 3)Mary Chapin and had James P.; Margaret; and Hannah. He m. 4) to a Mrs. Smith by whom he had the following children: Sarah; Nancy; George P.; Almira; and Robert H. A total of fourteen children by four different wives. Abram was at one time the mayor of Columbus City and his name is found frequently in many different sources, especially in the history of Columbus City. A Mrs. Fulton also had an early hotel in that city. Norma Jennings

Folks, I am enclosing a note and my response that may be of interest to others on this list. ************************************************************************** Subject:FULTON Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 15:53:31 +0000 From: Byron Fulton <esfulton@bellsouth.net> To: hirth@frontiernet.net Hi Roberta, Don't know if you remember me, I e-mailed you several months back. I have been able to stumble onto info regarding my FULTON LINE. The earliest I have so far is a William Fulton Sr. b 1753 d. 1830 Laurens Co. SC. Don't know for sure where in Ireland he was born but lived for some time in Derry Co. Married Martha?? and had 6 children, the 5th of which Thomas b. 1785, of whom I am descended. William Sr. came to the US around 1787 and became a naturalized citizen in 1808. Do you see any connection possibilities between your Irish Fultons? Thanks, Byron Fulton ************************************************************************* Dear Byron, Sorry, I do not see any connection to my Irish Fultons. I noticed that Laurens Co, SC is near Abbeville, SC. Do you know about the Rev. Thomas Clark who first settled with part of his congregation in Salem (also known as White Creek/New Perth and is not far from Albany), Washington Co, NY in 1764. But a portion of the congregation settled in Abbeville, SC rather than NY, and the Rev. Clark subsequently resettled in Long Cane/Cedar Spring/Little River, SC circa 1782. His congregation came from Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland. When you read about his experiences, you learn about the cohesiveness of Seceder groups and the wide extent of networking and communication among members of the churches scattered along the entire eastern seaboard of the U.S even in the mid to late 1700s. And of course they communicated with their friends/family back in Northern Ireland. I just marvel at the communication that was able to take place during this early time period. For further details about the Rev. Clark, I found this information in the following books: 1) Destiny of the Scotch Irish, an Account of a Presbyterian migration 1720-1853 by H, Leonard Porter III, The Porter Co, FL, 1990, p 1-8. In particular this book outlines the migration of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with a focus on Salem, NY; Abeville, SC; Pittsburgh, PA; Rockbridge, VA; Gurnsey Co, OH; Preble Co, OH; Monmouth, IL; Randolph Co, IL; and then brief references to offshoots to Oregon, Kansas, Alabama, Texas 2) The Scotch-Irish in America by Henry Jones Ford, 1915, reprint 1995 Clearfield Co, p 252-256. If your William Fulton was a Seceder, this background information may be helpful. Roberta R.
