Folks, Why do descendants of the James Fulton of Augusta Co, VA who d 1753 and descendants of the Abraham Fulton/Margaret Guthrie(MD-PA 1772) line end up in Mount Pleasant, Henry Co, Iowa in 1861-1911 ? These appear to be two distinct Fulton lines who arrived in America about forty years apart in the 1700's. The fact that their descendants end up in the same area about 100 years later could be just coincidence, or is it the pull of migration patterns, or is it the pull of Church connections, or are there some family ties in Northern Ireland that are initially kept alive via the Church rather than fading over the decades of time ? If anyone has ideas about this, please let me know. The details are enclosed below. Roberta R. James Fulton mentions New England twice in his will which was filed in Augusta Co., Virginia. 134. Hugh Fulton5 (Harvey4, Martha3, William2, James1) was born 10 June 1833, in Augusta County, Virginia. I have done some research and have found the following additional information. Thompson and Sarah are enumerated on the 1870 and 1880 U. S. census in Keithsburg Twp., Mercer Co., Illinois, and the 1900 census in Geneva Twp., Fillmore Co., Nebraska. On the 1900 Soundex for New Boston Twp., Mercer Co., Illinois, I found an Edward J. FULTON, born Apr. 1860, age 40, place of birth Pennsylvania with wife Clio, b. Nov. 1868, age 31, place of birth Illinois and son Clinton, b. Mar. 1896, age 4, place of birth Illinois. Also enumerated is Sam B. ATWATER, father-in-law, b. Mar. 1835, age 65, place of birth Ohio. I believe this to be James Edward in your list above. In the 1900 census Harvey E. FULTON is enumerated with Thompson and Sarah. In the 1920 U. S. census for Lincoln, Lancaster Co., Nebraska, I found George B. COOPER, age 45, b. Illinois with wife Tessa R., age 44, b. Illinois, daughter Marjorie F., age 17, b. Illinois and brother-in-law Harvey E. FULTON, age 55, b. Illinois. This is a possible ancestor of James Fulton b. April 15, 1751. 3. ii. William Fulton(5) born circa 1730, probably in Pennsylvania or New England. Died 13 April 1821, age 91 yrs. in Gallia Co., Ohio. A William testified in Rockbridge that he taught Joseph Graham and is mentioned as a schoolteacher in 1758 Indications are that the William who remained in Augusta Co was illiterate and probably was not the schoolteacher.
Excuse me, I meant to say David McCutcheon, not David Fulton in my previous post. I would like to add an addendum to my previous notes. John Fulton who married Mary Steele was still living at home at the time his father died in 1753. This would preclude his having a son James b. 1751. Proof enough!!
In response to David Fultons question on the two James Fultons. A very competent researcher, Mrs. Katharine Bushman, who is now deceased did the research in Augusta County, Virginia. She used church records and cemetery records that she herself compiled from primary source data to verify our James Fulton. Everything she did was thoroughly documented. There are also two McClure family Bibles that have James Fulton and Elizabeth Mitchell's marriage. This marriage can also be verified in the Augusta County, Virginia marriage records. Elizabeth's sister's grandson, John McClure, was clearly the heir to James Fulton and Elizabeth Mitchell's estate in 1834. Our William Fulton was omitted in Chalkley's records but Mrs. Bushman found his will in Augusta Co. records. Yes, there are known errors and omissions in Chalkley's records. The Fulton Family has many members who remained unmarried or married late in life. At least three of William Fulton and Margaret Lusk's children never married. We know the connection between John Fulton m. Mary Steele to our William because they are both found in James Fulton, d.1753's will. It left instructions for land to be purchased for William Fulton who was still living at home. John Fulton handled this purchase and sold it to William after the eldest son James Fulton died. This land transaction can be verified by land transactions. James Fulton who was born April 15, 1751 and served in the Revolutionary War is the one that moved to Gallia County, Ohio. James Fulton, son of John Fulton & Mary Steele did not serve in the Rev. War and he was born 10 August 1755; died 14 February 1834 and was buried in Augusta County. There is an error in Aull's book with the wrong birth date for James. This has since been corrected by Aull. If you look at the Augusta map showing Borden's grant and Beverly's grant, you can see the close proximity of John and William's land. Norma Jennings
Folks, I am enclosing a recent note from another list regarding settlers of Kingstree, Craven Co (current Williamsburg Co) SC. It may help in the future to shed some light on the origins of David Fulton who obtained a land warrant in 1731 in Kingstree, Craven Co, SC. Notice that the Seawrights came from Londonderry, Northern Ireland to Kingstree, SC about 1730, which may have preceded the orgainized settlement of Kingstree by the land agents advertising in Northern Ireland starting ca. 1732. Pat Stark has provided more discussion of David Fulton in the Fulton Family newsletter 1992 starting on page 75 and on this forum that explains how the descendants of this David Fulton are found at Midway, Liberty Co., GA, (1760-1820) and Maury Co., TN, (1803-1830) with later generations moving to Alabama. Finding out more about the Rev. John Baxter and his "band of Presbyterians" may help us to resolve David Fulton's origins. Roberta R. William Seawright and his wife Esther Thompson and family had arrived in Charleston with a band of Presbyterians led by the Rev John Baxter. Other Seawrights landed in Pennsylvania and migrated into Virginia and then to South Carolina. The various sections of the family received land grants at Camden County and members distinguished themselves as doctors, ministers, teachers, builders and farmers. Brothers Andrew and Samuel Seawright, arrived at Charleston with their families in a party of 50 and within a short time they had acquired 1,150 acres at Boonesborough township in the Long Cane area close to Abbeville. Andrew was killed in the Revolutionary War and two of his grandchildren froze to death hiding from (Tory) loyalists in the cane brakes. Katy

For the past ten years, genealogists researching the surname Fulton have gathered to exchange information (and tour famous Fulton sites.) This year, at the suggestion of our Fulton webmaster Roberta Hirth, we are meeting at Salt Lake City, Utah. The dates: The weekend of October 29, 30, and 31 for introductions, a Fultons Folly banquet, and extensive genealogical sharing, followed by a week of research at the LDS Family History Library beginning on Monday, November 1. Fultons and friends are invited to come for the weekend, for the week, or for both. If you are interested in joining us at this last Fulton party of the 20th Century, then please contact me for further information. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, CO

Dave, I am still looking through papers I have. A lady from New York sent me a copy of a letter she had. At the top there was a note that this letter was also found in James Fulton's Rev. War Pension records in Washington, DC. This letter was dated August 23, l933. I will not try to put the whole letter on here (if you would like a copy I could send it by mail). This is the part I want to put here " The record of James Fulton has been found and is furnished herein, the data for which were obtained from the papers on file in his claim for pension, R.3849, based upon his military service in that war. James Fulton was born April 15, 175l in Augusta County, Virginia. He resided in Augusta County, Virginia, until about 1808, when he moved to the state of Ohio". There is more about when he enlisted, etc. but the pension was refused because he failed to furnish proof of services as required by the pension laws. The letter was signed by A.D. Hiller, Assistant to Administrator. If he filled out the application then I would say that the date of April 15, 1751 is correct. The lady also sent me a copy of the Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of ( ) paper, June 7th 1832. State of Ohio, Gallia County. "On the 12th day of April A.D. 1836, personally appeared in open court before the Honourable Thomas Irvin, President and Thomas Rodgers, John Holcomb and Joseph Fletcher, apociates (their spelling) Judges of our said Court of Common Pleas now sitting, James Futon, of Ohio, aged eighty four years (84) who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following Declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of the Act of Cangroup papers June of the A.D 1832". This then goes on about his service. I have decided to send for a copy of his pension record and see what else I get. Would this be good proof of his birth date? I have his will, his son John's will and wills of three of John's children. These I found in the Probate Court in Gallia County, Ohio. Seems like where I am having my problem in getting back into Virginia. Margaret
Norma and Margaret Since both James Fulton biographies seem plausible but contradictory, will Norma please amplify why she is certain her James Fulton will with a late marriage and no children is the right guy. (A priori an earlier first marriage would actually nearer the norm). We have two dates of birth, 1751 and 1755 . Dave McCutchan dagmac@bellatlantic.net
