Hi listers! My wife is supposedly related to Robert Fulton of steamboat fame. Was he ever married? Did he have any children? If so, are there any genealogies online pertaining to him? My wife's closest connection to him was her Great grandfather, Thomas Fulton DeLaHunt, b. abt 1895 who lived in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark Alan
Hi --Your Robert Fulton Jr. search shouldn't be too difficult. Highland, Scotland G., Fourth Annual Christmas Plea, Clarksburg, WVA, 1926. Housed in the Western Reserve Historical Society library, Cleveland, OH CS71.S643 describes the Smith (MacDonald) family which is the lineage of Robert Fulton's mother, Mary Smith. She is related to Benjamin West, the portrait painter. Any good biography of Robert Fulton will tell you who he married, children... We also were told we were related to Robert Fulton, but did not know how. We knew we were related to the McKinnis family (there is a good printed geneology). Turns out Robert Fulton bought a farm in 1786, Washington co, Hopewell twp, PA, for his mother and sisters after he became famous. We are related through his sister Isabella Cooke. Her two daughters married McKinnis brothers and moved to Ohio in the early 1800's. >From Abstracts of Washington Co PA Wills, Western Reserve Historical Society Library, Cleveland, OH, F11x; 12/13/1814 Will of Robert Fulton, Jr, NY, NY pg 312 Beneficiaries: wife Harriett Livingston Fulton Brother: Abraham Smith Fulton Sisters: Elizabeth Scott Isabella Cooke Mary Morris (deceased) [She married David Morris, a nephew of Benjamin West] You need to research back from your grandparent through the census records, if necessary. I have more information, but I need to try to figure out where you fit to see if my material is relevant to you. We really enjoyed researching this line. Folks, Well with the 1999 Fulton Reunion at the LDS at Salt Lake City barely six weeks away, my sister Florence and I are feverishly planning our research goals. Looking forward to all the sharing of information attendees will exchange at the meetings at the hotel on the weekend before the research blitz begins. With the LDS Family History Catalog online, it makes it a lot easier to document ahead of time the microfilm numbers and call numbers of books that we want to look up. By the way, if you need more information about the reunion, please contact Carol Proctor. Her e-mail address is: cproctor@gateway.net Looking forward to seeing you there. Roberta R. Hi List, Does anyone have any information concerning James R. Fulton who was born April 25, 1751 in Augusta CO. VA and died July 15, 1839 in Gallia CO. OH. He was married to Jane Matthews in 1776 in Augusta CO. VA. Jane's dates are born 1754 in Augusta CO. VA died about 1819 in Gallia CO. OH. I believe that James R.'s father was named John Fulton (need information on him also). James R.'s children were James Jr., Thomas, John, Mary, William, and Margaret. Thanks, Nancy Helvey

The following is list of land transactions that involve a specific parcel of land owned by Samuel Fulton. I don't think this is the same parcel of land I refer to in previous post. In the 1801 deed, the history of this parcel is given in detail. This land is sold amongst multiple Fultons and deeds give many valuable Fulton clues. I'm going to try to summarize info so you can follow. When a wife is mentioned I include her name. This land was sold amongst many Fultons. (I wish I would have had time to look up grantees!) July 5, 1788 - Samuel acquired two adjacent tracts of land in Ohio Co., VA. #1: He paid two pound sterling to Virginia for 400 acres along Ohio River, including land along the Ohio River he made improvements on in 1774. This land begins on banks of Short Creek and extends to banks of Ohio River. Samuel was an assignee of Thomas Edgington, who was an assignee of William Haskins/Hawkins. (Note: William Hawkins actually settled here for a short time - but was terrified of the Indians and moved back east.) #2: Samuel (assignee of John Stephenson) was granted 200 acres lying along Ohio River. This parcel adjoins land of John Wilson, John McCulloch and a Fulton settlement. I can't tell if this is another Fulton or Samuel. Quote" . . . . 93 degrees to a hickory corner to Fulton settlement and with his line N88 degrees . . . " 1791 - Samuel Fulton, of Ohio Co., VA, sold Jonas Mentzer (Mencer) 26 ½ acres of land on the Ohio River for 45 pounds. (In 1801 deed it mentions that Jonas and his wife Susana sell this land to John Fulton. Date of deed - May 5, 1795) 1792 - Samuel and Jane Fulton of Ohio Co., VA, sold Alexander Fulton of the town of Washington, land for twenty pounds. Land adjoins line and corner of David Chambers land and David Chambers mill dam on Short Creek. June 1, 1795 - Alexander Fulton of Washington Co., PA, sells John Fulton of Ohio Co., VA, the tract of land Alexander bought from Samuel and Jane in 1792, for $60. (John apparently also bought adjacent Mentzer/Mencer land in May 1795.) 1797 - John Fulton of Ohio Co., VA, sells Sarah Chambers of same county, a parcel of land supposed to contain 9 acres, lying on Short Creek. This land lies next to Chamber's mill dam on creek. 1799 - Samuel Fulton of the Commonwealth of Virginia, sold John Fulton of the same county, parcel of land for 100 Spanish milled dollars. No acreage mentioned, just typical trees, stakes, etc., Ohio River and Short Creek and the parcel of land Samuel sold to Jonas Mentzer (Mencer), which is now in the possession of John Fulton. Only Samuel signs this deed (no Jane). May 5, 1801 - James and Jane Fulton, Ohio Co., VA, sold/rented William McKennon land for $159. I'm not sure this is same land from description. Interest (6% in 1801!) default of payment, rents and profits and terms used in this contract signed by James & Jane Fulton and William McKennon. May 5, 1801 - Samuel & his wife Jane Fulton and John Fulton of Ohio Co., VA, sell Ignatius Simms a total of 585 ½ acres for $4,684 U.S. money. This land contains all the original land Samuel owned except for two tracts: the one sold to Sarah Chambers and a 3 ½ acre tract on the creek, John Fulton sold to James Fulton. (No date mentioned - didn't find this deed between John and James in search.) Question: Why didn't Jane Fulton sign (rather mark - she could not write) with Samuel on deed to John in 1799? Were wives required to sign/mark? She is requested to appear before court in 1801 when they sell all their land and move to Ohio. I also found it interesting that Alexander may have owned some of this land, but did he live there? Deeds only record his residence as being in "town of Washington" which I'm certain means Washington, PA (In Washington Co., PA). Still lots of questions - but putting the pieces together! More to follow when I get time to type this stuff up. Lynn (Fulton) England
Next - land record research. FYI - If you have any ancestors in Western PA, Ohio Valley area in 1770-1800 time frame I highly recommend you buy or borrow the following book "That Dark and Bloody River" by Allan Eckert. He has also written several other books on early frontier settlers. He mentions tons of names of settlers and has resources in back of book. His books are very "novelized" but he also gives extensive resources to do follow up research. I am also a descendent of Hamilton Kerr/Carr who was an Indian scout, early settler in Wheeling WV (VA) area and found he is mentioned in many Ohio Valley history references. Settlers in this area lived a very hazardous life and were in constant fear of Indian attacks. After reading book it seems remarkable they were willing to settle there, or that anyone survived. It's a real eye opening snapshot of what our ancestor's lives were like. It wasn't pretty! Anyway - while researching another early ancestor I stumbled across a James Fulton in this book, and have been trying to find out who he was. James Fulton is mentioned in this book as being with Andrew Zane in 1783, on the Ohio River during an Indian attack. I got a chance to stop in WV archives for a few hours on our way to SC a few weeks ago. I only had time to look at grantor records but I found a James Fulton of Bart Twp, PA, who bought 300+ acres of land from John Kidd of Bart Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, on November 30, 1779. Parcel of land lying along the waters of Short Creek, Ohio Co., VA, and adjoining the land of Samuel Grimes (Graham), John Lemen, Abraham Vanmetre, and Joseph Hedges. James paid 800 pounds for this land! But then on the following day, December 1, 1779, James turns around and sells the exact same parcel of land to William Dunlap of Bart Twp, Lancaster Co., PA.! There is no monetary amount mentioned. At this point I don't believe this is the same parcel of land that the Samuel Fulton I believe to be my ancestor owned on Short Creek. Samuel's land is described as being on the Ohio River, extending to the mouth of Short Creek in deeds. James' deed only names Short Creek and the other surnames mentioned live a little east of Ohio River according to the research I've been able to do. The names of adjoining land owners don't seem to match either. This James Fulton certainly got my attention - wish I knew if he settled somewhere in area. Anyone out there know? Next - part 3 . . .
Fellow researchers: I been quiet, but busy this summer! I finally had a chance to sit down and compile some of the info I've gathered this summer. Will send in several e-mails. Enjoy! WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION First, some additional info on my ancestor Jesse Fulton. There were TWO Jesse Fultons in the 1820 Ohio census in adjacent counties which accounts for some of the confusion about his age/children in later years. By 1830 the younger one is gone. I will need to look at land records to see if I can decipher that question. Info for the two Jesse's follows: Jesse Fulton - 1820 Franklin Twp., Coshocton Co. Males >45 - 1 10-16 - 3 <10 - 1 Females >45 - 1 <10 - 1 Jesse Fulton - 1820 Meigs Twp., Muskingum Co. Males 26-45 - 1 10-16 - 1 <10 - 1 Females 26-45 - 1 <10 - 4 and in 1830: Jesse Fulton, Linton Twp., Coshocton Co. Males 60-70 - 1 10-15 - 2 5-10 - 2 <5 - 1 Females 40-50 - 1 10-15 - 1 5-10 - 1 <5 - 1 Possible conclusions: My Jesse Fulton is probably the same person as the older Jesse (Coshocton Co.) in 1820 census, but age for adult female does not fit. According to 1850 census data, Sarah would have been 32 yrs old in 1820 (not >45). It is possible the age was recorded incorrectly - I have found that census records aren't always correct! (I've found some major discrepancies in Meigs Co., Ohio census.) Sarah also had another child, Mary Fulton in 1831/32. Obviously if this is Sarah, she could NOT the parents of all the youngsters in 1830 census if her age is correct. The ages of the male children in 1820 census indicate the older Jesse is the one who married the widow, Mrs. Sarah Jones in Muskingum County in 1815. Previous research indicates Sarah had two sons when she married Jesse, but in the county will index I found these entries: a 1814 entry for John Jones - a will, and in Jan. 1815 there are three guardianship records (all on same date) for John, Samuel and Robert Jones. So did Sarah have 3 sons? Samuel and Robert are mentioned in later info. What happened to John? Sarah and Jesse's children born to this marriage were: Marcus, Joseph, Lewis/Louis, and Mary Fulton. At this point I don't have any idea who younger Jesse is, or if he belongs with older Jesse. This was the first indication I've seen that there were two Jesse's in same area in Ohio at same time. More research needed! More miscellaneous Fulton info I've uncovered recently: Maria (Mary) Eschenbach, b. Jan.3, 1754, d. 1818, John Berndt, John Fulton, ? Amder, and Alexander Fulton. I did some searches on Eschenbach name and found they were primarily in northeast PA, Berks Co., PA, area. To be Continued . . . Lynn (Fulton) England
Reference: Note from "W.Harvey Fulton" <whf@bc.sympatico.ca> regarding Subject: Fulton's first white settlers Bass River Nova Scotia 1760 dated Sun, 29 Aug 1999 16:08:17. My response included at end of note. **************************************************************************** Hi Roberta; My name is William Harvey Fulton from British Columbia Canada. I was reading your most interesting Web Page and was wondering if you possibly had any information you would share on my family. It starts with James Fulton, at the age of 20 in 1760 sailed to america the subject of this sketch and who afterwards turned out to be the first settler of Bass River Nova Scotia. His Grandfather ( also Named James ) lived in Londonderry, Ireland, and was killed during the siege of that city. After his death his widow, Eliza Alexander Fulton and her family, John and Mary, moved on a farm to reside. The son John married Ann Boggs, and their family were James, Samuel, Thomas, John, William, David, Francis and Sarah. James before emigrating to New England, was given a good education. James was a land serveyor in New England and Pennsylvania. Later he came to Nova Scotia and was engaged by the Government to make surveys and plans for what is now Colchester County. For this work he was allowed a free grant of land wherever he might choose. He selected Bass River, where he settled about 1765, thus becoming the founder of the place. He married Margaret Campbell, of Folly ( now Glenholme) on Nov 1 1770. Induced by letters to his brothers at home in Ireland, they, with two exceptions - William and David followed him to Nova Scotia. Samuel, with his wife Mary Boggs, the first English-speaking woman at Bass River, arrived about 1769 or 1770. The above information I aquirerd out of a old news paper, The Truro Weekly News dated July 15 1965, to mark the 200th Anniversay of Bass River. It payed tribute to memory of the founder, Judge James Fulton. Anything information you may be able to provide about these folks would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Harvey Fulton ******************************************************************************* Dear Harvey, I have searched the Fulton discussion list archives and have sent you some of the old notes posted regarding this family. Do you have access to the book "The Fulton Family of Atlantic Canada" Sponsored by the Fulton Family Associates Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, 1979 ? It has extensive information on this Fulton line. Perhaps some of the Fulton researchers on the Fulton discussion list can add some more information about this Nova Scotia family. Roberta R. I searched for Fulton in the "American Life Histories: Manuscripts from the Federal Writers' Project,1936-1940" at <http://rs6.loc.gov/ammem/wpaquery.html> and got the following: Submitted by Theodore Poston ANGELO HERNDON COMES BACK FROM GEORGIA References: Personal Interview (August 7, 1934) Memory refreshed from Amsterdam News files {Begin handwritten} New York {End handwritten} {Begin handwritten} 1938-9 {End handwritten} He was tired. Very tired and very sick. His sagging muscles, pallid face, drooping shoulders and nervous fingers proclaimed it. And as the train headed for Pennsylvania Station where 6,000 people waited impatiently to hail him, Angelo Herndon turned wearily to the reporter who had met him at Manhattan Transfer. "Oh, the Amsterdam News, I remember it. It was one of the five papers which came to me regularly at Fulton Tower prison, but which they never let me read. The Daily Worker, Amsterdam News, New York Times, Atlanta World and Wall Street Journal." He smiled slowly. "No, they wouldn't let me read even the Wall Street Journal. They poured ink on it." - ----------------------------- What was the Fulton Tower Prison he was referring to? Glenn Busbin http://members.aol.com/Busbin8088/home.html
Hello all, During the past week there have been a number of postings on multiple lists concerning WWI Draft Registration Cards maintained by the National Archives and Records Admininstration-Southeast Region in Atlanta. Unfortunately, the postings contain a number of inaccuracies and as a result, the staff at the facility is being innudated with requests that cannot be serviced. For example, the postings state that photocopies of the cards cost 50 cents when they are actually $10. Secondly, the postings inaccurately state how the records are arranged, therefore, patrons are requseting copies that cannot be properly searched. Please refer to a posting from NARA-SE contained in last nights Roots Web Review for the correct information. Additionally, if you see innacurrate postings on other lists, please refer them to the "Review" for the correct info. Thanks a bunch (from a staffer). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at this address or at work> gary.fulton@atlanta.nara.gov If you would like to request an order form for this record, please write to> archives@atlanta.nara.gov and provide your postal mailing address. It's unfortunate that this event has taken place as our goal at NARA-SE is to provide the best possible service to all patrons. I feel like I should apologize for bringing this to your attention as I know this is an open forum; not established for anything other than the exchange of information and queries. However, many well intentioned genealogists have been mis-informed. As a Fulton, and member of this list, I just wanted to let you all know. Gary
Hi, This is my first time posting, I've been watching for awhile and I hope some of you might be able to help. James Fulton (1791-1850) married Mary Ann McMullen. James was descended from John Fulton (1713-?), who was born in Scotland and emigrated to America in 1753 settling in Norristown twp, Chester Co., PA My Fultons also spent time in Centre Co., PA and in Illinois. I'm wondering if there is any good way to research John Fulton from Scotland. Thanks Ya'll Jennifer Fulton

RUTH GIBBS: small regular photo of a baby, less than a year old...caption just says her name. will make note, the albums belonged to the Fulton family of Perry County, IL., also have Eatons, Hogues, Lafferty, Cunningham, Dyer, Huggins and more included. i also have one large album full of COX and RIPLEY pictures. again, so far, there is NO connection that i have found to my family...or where/why that particular album was in our possession. if you have either of those names, maybe they are YOUR relatives!! any and all help greatly appreciated! :) Jean akaKUEKER@aol.com ALHN Perry County IL <A HREF="http://www.usgennet.org/~ahilperr/index.html">PerryALHN (new url )</A> ALHN Monroe County IL <A HREF="http://www.usgennet.org/~ahilmonr/index.htm">MonroeALHN</A>

G'day Folks, This is my first time using this so please be patient and I hope it works. My name is Skip Fulton from Melbourne Australia. I am trying to research my GGG-GF in Scotland. The info so far... Andrew Fulton married Catherine Semple in Dunfermline Fife in 1831. They moved to Glasgow and settled there. One of their children was Robert Fulton (my line) who was christened in 1837 in Barony Lanarkshire. The decendants from him on my line have been attained however I cannot find any info on Andrew F & C Semple. I have looked at the actual marriage film at the LDS and it docuements nothing about their date of births... I'm am really stuck, if anyony can help me, or provide any information about Reobert Fulton or his son John Herbert Fulton (who moved to Kent England, then Australia) i would be greatly appreciative.. If this hasn't worked, i'm sorry... Regards, Skip Fulton Age 21 Melbourne Australia ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
