I am searching for the lineage of an Archibald FULTON who was born before 1795 and married Mary Conner about 1820 in Lee County, Virginia. Hello, I am a newbie researching her husband's ancestry. I've traced his family back to about 1790, with the birth of an Archibald Fulton. His father was Archibald Fulton as well, and his mother was Margaret Young. They seems to have stayed in the Crosshouse area of Kilmaurs in Ayrshire, Scotland, and most if not all were involved in mining. Any relatives out there? I'mll be happy to share what I have. Thanks! -Jennifer Campbell
I am having trouble! I have been kicked off the FULTON list and cannot resubscribe. Can you help me? ARNOLD SOMMER MIDLAND< TX nanc@iglobal.net
All is in readiness for the Fulton Reunion '99 to be held at Salt Lake City, Utah! A Fulton Checklist explaining what to pack was mailed this week. Attending the Fulton Reunion is pretty much like going to Fulton Camp, only you don't have to write your name on your underwear. If you are coming to this grand event, you'll want to bring along your Family Group Sheets and Descendant Chart. But the most important thing to bring, is your "burning Fulton question." If you could be guaranteed the answer to one question regarding your Fulton ancestry, what question would advance your research the most? That's the burning question - and we hope to answer every one! If you are unable to come to this event, I urge you to consider Roberta Hirth's generous offer to coordinate lookups. (See her message "Salt Lake City Lookup" sent 10/5/99.) I've observed Roberta and her sister Florence in action at a library before - sheer poetry in motion! I look forward to greeting the many Fultons who have come to our earlier reunions but I am especially eager to meet all the new Fulton researchers who are taking a chance on what can only be called a "Fulton blind date." You are the folks who will carry the research torch into the next Century! Thank you all for coming and welcome to the real Fultons' Folly! Patrice Fulton Stark Lone Tree, Colorado
Dear Roberta, At long last I've gotten my chart updated and won't bore you with what took so long. Our trip to Northern Ireland (County Down) Scotland (Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Inverness and Fulton Tower among others) and England was a great success. We visited many ancestral sites and took our usual "ration" of photos and video. The real "fun" was that we did it all by rental car and the other side of the road was again a "real treat"! Anyway, here's the decendancy chart I promised last May. I hope it proves interesting and is useful to someone perhaps going to Salt Lake. Generation 7 is from the Hugh Ramsey Fulton Genealogy with inputs from Irene Fulton (Thanks VERY much Irene). And generation 8 is from Irene's information also. The more I look at this data and after our trip, it seems to make sense. By the way, we found a very good map in Scotland which shows the Fulton tower, bern and buildings. It was very accurate and useful. And now, the chart! It's in ahnentafel format. Roberta and fellow list members, I think this is a great idea, and a great opportunity for our fellow "Fulton's " to be part of the Salt Lake City " Fulton Reunion"; even though they can not attend. Put me on your list of volunteers to do a look-up. Florence
Folks, For those of you NOT attending the Fulton 1999 Reunion at Salt Lake City, I want you to be able to share in some of the excitement of this trip. At the reunion, I will try to organize a LOOKUP brigade by the attendees who are able to volunteer one hour of their time to do LOOKUPs for those not attending. Please notice that this offer is to do a LOOKUP, not research. I ask that you restrict your request to ONE item that preferably is not available at your local Family History Center. Much of the material is on microfilm and you can order it and look at it at your Local Family History Center. But some of it is only available in hard copy form at Salt Lake City, and that is what your request should focus on. We will not look up any item on Microfilm, but only one item available on hard-copy. If an item is on both microfilm and hardcopy, we will look up the hardcopy version, but I suggest you request something that is only available on hard-copy because you may not be able to get it any other way. In my previous note this morning, I outlined how you can use the ONLINE Family History Catalog and the state research guides. Use those directions to find out the call number for the item you want us to lookup. Specify what 5-10 pages you want copied (example: Index on Fulton, table of contents, several pages on the history of the Presbyterian Church at Town ABC, etc.). 1) Send your request to me, not to the discussion list. 2) The subject of the note should be "Salt Lake City Lookup" 3) Specify the Title of the Item and Author and the call number of the item you want us to lookup. Please make sure you list the information of the call number correctly and its location. 4) Specify the 5-10 pages that you want copied. 5) Provide your snail mail address. 6) State the question you are seeking the answer to and provide some general background information of what specific line or individual you are looking for that you feel will be helpful. 7) I will ask each volunteer to spend no more than 30 minutes on an individual Lookup request, including copy time. For example, in the LDS Wisconsin Research Guide, I noticed the listing for an Index to the Early Pioneer Settlers of Wisconsin. My request would look as follows: 1) Title = Some pioneer families of Wisconsin : an index 2) Author = Betty Patterson 3) Call # = 977.5 D22s 4) Location = FHL US/CAN Book 5) Copy Pages = Fulton Names and page numbers listed in the index 6) Snail Address = Roberta Hirth, P.O. Box 384, Harriman, New York 10926 7) Question/General Background Information: (State the question you are trying to answer along with a general description of the family you are researching, or whatever else would be helpful. This can be as long or as short as you wish.) This should be fun !!! Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 FULTON web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm
For the folks attending the Salt Lake City 1999 Reunion or for anyone using the local LDS centers, I recommend that you use the ONLINE Family History Catalog to help you determine BEFORE the visit the microfilm numbers and Book Call numbers that you want to look up. Enclosed at the bottom are brief directions to help you get started. I also highly recommend using the ONLINE LDS research outlines. They contain a wealth of information to help not only the beginning researcher, but also the highly experienced genealogist. They are outstanding guides, now all available free on the Internet. There are Outline Research Guides for each State, for Census, Immigration, Military. "A Guide to Research" is basic but even helps experienced researchers to "refocus". The outline on "The Family History Library Catalog" reviews how to use it on microfiche or on CD ROM, but I do not see one yet for the online version. But if you need a review of how the LDS categorizes so much of their information by Locality or the types of TOPICS/SUBJECTS, then it is essential reading. When you scan down the list for all the state guides, don't overlook scrolling down to the United States section for its research outline as well as the lists of outlines for census, military and immigration that are listed in the United States section. *************************************************************** To Find the LDS Research Outlines Online: Go to the LDS FamilySearch home page at url: http://www.familysearch.org/ Select BROWSE CATEGORIES (listed on left side of screen) Select RESEARCH SUPPORT Select SOURCEGUIDE Select HOW TO GUIDES button (Later on check out the Catalog Helper button) Scroll down and Select the specific guide of your interest. *************************************************************** Below is an example of how to get the film numbers for the census or deeds. Go to the LDS FamilySearch home page at url: http://www.familysearch.org/ Select BROWSE CATEGORIES (listed on left side of screen) Scroll down, select LIBRARIES Select FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY CATALOG Select PLACE SEARCH [Later on check out Surname Search (to see the list of 76 Books and Manuscripts on Fulton) and All Searches (to check out by author, subject, title, microfilm number)] Fill in fields for PLACE and PART OF Example: Place Orange Part Of (optional) New York Place Search Results: Click on geographic area you want: NEW YORK, ORANGE Select Subject topic - Example: ORANGE COUNTY CENSUS OR for deeds Scroll to bottom Select [21-34] to see more subjects and then Select NEW YORK, ORANGE, - LAND & PROPERTY Select CENSUS RECORDS 1825-1875 Orange County, New York or for deeds select DEEDS, 1703-1900 INDEX to DEEDS ORANGE CO, NY In upper right hand corner select VIEW FILM NOTES The next screen will list the details of the location of the microfilm, the film number, and the item on the film for the particular census. Copy this information for your research trip, including the item number so you can wind quickly through the microfilm to the item you want. ******************************************************************************* I hope this helps you to prepare a list of microfilm numbers and book call numbers of materials you will want to look up. Just a hint about prioritizing: if a source does not list a microfilm number, then it is only available in hardcopy at Salt Lake City. That means that in the future, you cannot request the material from your Local Family History Center. Thus when at Salt Lake City, look at those items first and then the microfilm items, which usually you can request at the local center if you run out of time, although some microfilms are not distributed because of copyright restrictions by the author or government. Good Evening, On August 10 1999 Stephen Schifini wrote about his gr grandmother Iva Lou Fulton born 1880. He stated her grandfather was Adonijah Fulton born 1807 Stanford Vt; died 1880. I have the will index for an Adonijah Fulton, who died April?, 25,1880. Place of residence, at time of Will, Canton, St Lawrence Co. NY. Date of Probate Nov 8, 1880 . Will Book 17 page 129. Issue of Letters of Testamentary Book 7 page 285. Inventory filed Feb 18, 1881. Hope this helps. Florence
Pat, just a wee correction, his name was Henry Fulton - Born March 14. 1847 , died December 6, 1901. See ya at Salt Lake! Always, Florence Pat wrote: Congratulations, Florence. Hello to you all! Well I have finally made it and have gotten on the internet. However, I am a little fimiluar with some of you, since my sister, Roberta, has kept me updated on alot of what goes on with this list. Some of you know me from my traveles with you on the Fulton Family tours. I can't wait to see you all again in Salt Lake @ the LDS , the end of October. I have been doing a new project for the "Fulton" surname , here in New York. I am researching the surname Fulton, in New York. I have files, by county, going up to about 1860. I am more than willing to share any info I have. I would like to request from anyone who is researching the Fulton surname, if they have any info that mentions a Fulton in New York State, to please send it to me. I hope to be able to study the migration pattern of the Fulton surname in early times. Any info would be appreciated! For a little backround of my family, my 4th GrG , James Fulton was born in Dalkeith in 1739, left Edinburgh, Scotland in 1792 and came to New York. He brought his wife, Nancy (Agnes) & 3 of his children, John, Phebe & Andrew, with him. In 1804 he finally settled in Sullivan Co NY.( At that time it was Ulster Co NY) and started the Fulton Settelment. On his grave stone it reads; "An aged man I made my way From Scotland to America, And by a many toilsome day, I purchased ground wherein I lay." Always, Florence
Patrice, This has been a long time coming, but I guess it's better late than never. Since our younger son is to be married on Saturday, October 23, I will not be able to meet with you all in Salt Lake. In addition, my wife, Marge who is really the genealogist, is still teaching and won't have any extra time available. Perhaps the next time will work out better for us. Thanks for all the input about Agnes vs. Isabella. I am checking my sources and will get back to you. A little controversy makes for more accurate family history. Mary Ann Phillips Question for Mark Alan: Where is North Valley Radio located?
I am still trying to trace my husband's g fathers family. ROBERT FULTON as born in Glasgow approximately 1882-4'ish [sorry no exact dates guessing as he had a daughter of about 88 years still living]. At about 18 he walked to Liverpool and joined the Army and was immediately shipped to India. He stayed there until his death, having left the army and become [possibly] security of some sort probably for the army. He married AGNES JAYNE JASPER[GASPER] who was possibly Burmese or Armenian. They had six or possibly seven children. ROBERT was the only boy and the eldest, EILEEN MARGARET[born Jan 1914] and was the eldest daughter and my husbands mother. I know there was a daughter called Katherine [my youngest daughter is Katherine Lucinda Jayne and would also like to know the history] We do not have the names of any of the other girls. I do know that EILEEN managed to keep the family together and returned them all to Scotland on the death [in India] of their father we are not sure about their Mother but think that she also returned at some point. Why is there such reluctance by the family member to admit their 'roots'. We have no prejudice and would really love to meet all our relatives. My husband is dying and would like v much, now his mother is unable to comprehend what is happening to trance all family members and at least establish some sort of connect. Please....... Our love to all of you, however if you do not wish to know us please say why. Any help tracing this family would be appreciated. I have five daughters and a son who would like to know!!! Jeannette Lee [also Lyttleton-Lee]
Regarding McKinnis (Charles and Robert, sons of Charles and Rachel Carr) brothers, married to CRINER sisters: Martha and Elizabeth daughters of Philip CRINER and Agnes Fulton. I too am related to Agnes Fulton. What (a group and I) have found is the printed genealogies on Hancock Co Ohio and ones published for the McKinnis Family Reunions going back to 1914 all show Agnes was "Belle Fulton". Isabelle Fulton, sister to THE Robert was married to a Cooke and had only one daughter, who married a Wythe. These genealogies appear to be in error that connect the McKinnis brothers' wives to THE Robert Fulton. Do you have any other proof that Isabella Fulton Cooke had more than one daughter? The girls who married McKinnis brothers who "sailed down the Ohio River in a hulled out tree" married Craner/Criner sisters. Agnes Fulton, sister of John and James Fulton married Philip Criner. They had 9 children, Martha and Elizabeth were two of them. The Criners and McKinnis' are enumerated next to each other in Versailles Township, Allegheny County and in Plum Township, Allegheny County. Around 1800 Charles McKinnis (the father) purchased land in Consequenning twp., Butler Co. After Philip's death, in 1795, Agnes moved to Butler County (1815) to be near her brother, James who was one of the first settlers of Middlesex township. Her daughter Sarah, married a Job Chamberlin and also moved to Ohio with her sisters who married the McKinnis brothers. Another sister also married a first settler of Ohio and is listed as a sister in law to the McKinnis'. Another sister married a Clendennen, which is my line. We are hoping to correct the misinformation that is found in the various publications on the McKinnis family, which at the present time we believe is in error. I am replying on the list to hopefully get in contact with anyone else that has this same misinformation. Please let me know what you have in the way of documentation and I can do the same. Also, see this lists archives on the family of McKinnis/Fulton they should be helpful. Lori
