    1. How do you spell Fulton?
    2. Patrice Fulton Stark
    3. Question: How many ways can you spell Fulton? I think that FULTON is the loveliest name I have ever seen. I remember learning to write it as a child and I continue to include Fulton in my signature although I have married. (My sister and I are the end of our Fulton line.) Here are all the spellings I have seen so far: FULTON FULDEN FULTONE FULLTON FFULTON PFULTON FFULTONE FILTON FOLTON FOULTON FOULTOWN and then there's always FUTTON TUTTON SUTTON (where the writer forgot to cross the F, or crossed both the L and T) FELTON/FELDON I've never proved a FELTON to be a FULTON, but it certainly seems possible. FULLERTON I have proved two FULLERTONs to be FULTONs, but this is rare. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. Can any of you Canadian Fultons, or descendants help me? My husband's grandfather emigrated to Canada somewhere in the 1920's (not sure of dates) to go work as a gold miner. His brother was a sheriff. I don't know his name, the province or town. This is all from family stories. Anyway, one son was born in Canada, and after that they went back to Scotland, where the other children were born. There was also an older sister who lived in Pennsylvania. Apparently she was much older than my husband's grnadfather, and had raised him after their mother died. He tried to get in contact with her whenhe was an old man, but her family told him that she was so frail that the shock of hearing from her brother might kill her. His name was David Thomson Fulton. His father was George Fulton and his mother was Elizabeth Thomson. I'm looking for the name and any descendants of the sheriff brother, and the name and any descedants of the sister, whose name may have nbenn Meg or Elizabeth. Can anyone help? It would mean a lot to my husband. His mother, who was a Fulton, recently died. Thanks! -Jennifer Campbell

    3. Clark and Ernie Fulton (brothers), descendants of Civil War veteran, James Wesley Fulton, joined us in Salt Lake City. They arrived with an impressive array of research papers and one "burning question": who was the father of their gr-gr-grandfather, James Wesley Fulton (1841-1923)? By the end of the week, Clark & Ernie, coached by research veterans Roberta Hirth, Florence Wolfe, Ann Irwin, and others, had collected an impressive amount of information. But they still could not identify their elusive Fulton ancestor. Roberta and I, aided by Ernie Fulton, Florence Wolfe, and James L. Fulton, Jr., have been puzzling over this question for the past month. We are now going to share what we've found, describe how we found it, and let you in on our evidence and our reasoning. (Roberta made me do it!) As of this moment I do not know the answer. But we are sooooo close. I feel confident we will have the answer (and the proof) by the end of this message thread. Where to begin? Always start with what you know. Clark and Ernie came to Salt Lake City with an impressive six generation summary of their Fulton family. (With sources! Social Security Death Index, Bureau of Land Management homestead entries, birth, marriage, death, obituary and burial records, augmented with personal interviews and recollections. Beautiful!) >From Ernie: James Wesley Fulton "died March 12 1923 at Brighton Michigan." His death certificate states that his father's name was James Fulton. "In James Wesley's Pension papers, I have 2 documents that state his birth date as May 3, 1841, one by him dated May 20, 1912 in Brighton, Michigan, saying he was 71 and one by [his sister] Cornelia M. Sexton dated May 11, 1912 from Sacramento, California, saying she was 75." Cornelia reported that her younger brother was born in Geneva, New York. OK, everyone. If you want a real lesson in genealogy, grab a fresh tablet of paper and some pencils. You won't believe where this is going to take us! Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. Many of the early Fulton families were members of the Associate Presbyterian and the Reformed Presbyterian groups who often are referred to in America as Covenanters and Seceders. Their origin can be traced back to the Covenanters in Scotland. Brian Orr is creating a six part series on the history of the Covenanters. It can be reached directly at: http://www.tartans.com/articles/covmain.html It can be reached indirectly from the Gathering of the Clans at: http://www.tartans.com/ On the left side look at the box containing "Feature Articles". Scroll down and select "*New* The Covenanters" In this Feature Article box, there are many other articles of interest about the Scotch-Irish. If you select the article on Scotch Irish or go directly to http://www.tartans.com/articles/plantationmain.html you can read some fine background information on the Plantation period in Northern Ireland. The article on "Emmigration to the British Colonies in the 17th and 18th Century" is also helpful. The Rev. J.E. 3. Folks, I saw this post on the LDS-Genealogy-L list: "For those of you who don't already know, Ancestry.com http://www.ancestry.com FamilyTreeMaker's GenealogyLibrary.com http://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/ Everton Publishers - "Records Available on Everton's On-Line Search" http://emh.everton.com/subscribers/magazine/main.html are all giving free access to their entire sites starting December 20, 1999. Ancestry's ends January 4, 2000 and FTM's is for a week and Everton ends 12/31/99." I was able to successfully use the ancestry.com free access using Internet Explorer browser (ancestry.com had a problem with my Netscape 4.5 browser). I have not been successful gaining access to the FamilyTreeMaker or Everton's. There is lots of information to explore on ancestry.com. I recommend checking it out. You have to register for a userid and password (appears no strings attached) and then access is granted. You can use the global search to search all databases. Or if you want a list of their databases, on the first page at the top select the SEARCH tab, then select ADVANCED SEARCH, scroll down and on the left look for List of All Databases and select VIEW A LIST. This is convoluted to find, but I wanted to get an overview of the type of databases they carry. Remember you can use your browser's Edit/Find function to quickly find database names on this list of databases. Roberta R. This marriage greatly interests me as James Fulton who d. 1753 in Augusta Co., Va. was married to Sarah _______. He also was born around 1690, exact date unknown. This is the closest match I have found to date to my ancestor. Does anyone have any further information on the James Fulton in Carnmoney, Antrim, Ireland? Did he die in Ireland??? Norma Jennings

    3. Folks, Recieved a note from Peter Whitlock <whitlock@cape.com> on 4 Dec 1999 (note enclosed at end of this note), and wanted to share his findings with the members of the list. Peter, I think your conclusions about your family's origins from Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland are correct. Good detective work ! Don't forget to search the fulton-l list archives for Paisley. Bernard Butcher and Ken Mitchell from England have provided a lot of details about the Fultons in that area. Some of the interesting items are as follows: a) Fultons in the Paisley area in the 1200s b) Humphrey Fulton and his two sons established silk manufacturing in Paisley in the 1700s c) Paisley was a centre for the cotton industry, because the damp climate made the spinning process easier and because it was near to the port -- convenient for importing the raw materials and exporting the finished products. The Paisley print motif came from there. d) So many members of the Fulton family lived in Pailsey in the 19th Century that one Fulton historian remarked, “If you stand on any street and throw a rock, you would surely hit a Fulton.” e) Robert Fulton was age 33, born in Paisley, County of Renfrow [sic], Scotland. He sailed form Grunock [sic], Scotland on 10 Oct 1830 and arrived in Savanna, Ga 26 Nov 1830. He had resided in Ga ever since arrival and was a weaver by profession. Archibald Fulton arrived about the same time. f) John Fulton of Auchinbathie, a cadet form the old Grangehill family, was a staunch Jacobite. He acquired much wealth in contraband trade, which were transported inland on horseback, owing to the bad state of the roads; As he smuggled goods, he was shot in 1748, at the Shawswood on his journey to Edinburgh, with a great retinue of horses, carrying 'a cargo of smuggled guids, brandie, tea, tobacco, and silks'. His remains rest in the churchyard of Lochwinnoch with the bones of his forefathers." g) Fulton & Sons, Gauze Weavers, at 9, Watling Street, London, England. In 1789 and in 1795 the firm is shown as William, Robert & Henry Fulton, Gauze Weavers, at the same address. These are descendants of the Humphrey Fulton in Paisley. In 1789, Robert Fulton of steamboat fame wrote to his mom in PA and asked her to send mail to him at Henry Fulton's address at 9 Watling St, London. Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 FULTON web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm *********************************************************************** Peter Whitlock <whitlock@cape.com> wrote: Hi Roberta, Thank you for the reply, and the links that came with it. Your questions spurred me on to doing a little more digging of my own. You asked: >You state that (Annie FULTON, 1843-1916, m. 1875 to Peter LEITCH, >1843-1888, ship's officer; their daughter Margaret Fulton LEITCH >(Whitlock) was your great-grandmother) and that Annie Fulton's parents >were Robert FULTON (no dates available) and Jane HAMILTON. Where was the family you described located and do you know their migration paths? A note I have that was collected by my grandfather says that the Robert FULTON I wrote you about was "manager of Coats (Thread) Mill," but a different note by a different relative connecting him with the same mill refers to it as "Coats mill, paisley" - meaning, I assume, paisley shawls. Unfortunately, I have no information on where this mill was. Margaret Fulton LEITCH (1880-1968), my g-grandmother, met my g-grandfather, Herbert Ashby WHITLOCK of Nebraska (1879-1961) near Glasgow, Scotland, where some of her family lived. They left for India together as Presbyterian missionaries, and married in Bombay in 1907. Margaret's family raised my grandfather and his brother through their high school years, while their parents remained in India. Margaret and Herbert moved to midwestern U.S. somewhere around World War II?, and later retired to California. Aha! I just now looked up "Coats Mill Paisley" on the web and found that the Coats Mills of Paisley, Scotland included a thread mill among other textile mills. The following quote comes from a web page about Thomas Coats (1809-1883): "Within the family firm, J & P Coats (his two elder brothers), he was a key figure in the expansion of the company not just in Paisley where it had been founded in 1828, but also in Europe and in North and South America. By 1910 around 10,000 people worked in the thread mills in Paisley..." (http://www.fenet.net/coats/hist.htm). Hmm, so perhaps that suggests he worked in Paisley, Scotland, or perhaps not. Wow! I searched the LDS Church (http://www.familysearch.org) records for a marriage record between Robert FULTON and Jane HAMILTON in Scotland, and found the following: " Robert FULTON Sex: M Marriage(s): Spouse: Jean HAMILTON Marriage: 18 Jul 1828 Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland" A second record gives the same names and date but changes "Abbey" to "Paisley." After the two record links, come several surname page links, but none actually seem to connect to this marriage. I have had mixed luck finding other relatives through familysearch.org so I know that this could be a different couple than the one I am seeking. Also, I think that 15 years between marriage and the birth of Annie might be a tiny bit much. Unfortunately, another familysearch check reveals that depending on this sort of information can be tricky: ANNIE FULTON Sex: F Event(s): Birth: 13 Jul 1843 East Kilbride, Lanark, Scotland Parents: Father: ROBERT FULTON Mother: MARGARET HUNTER Another Annie FULTON was born in Paisley, Scotland 1853 of William FULTON and Jane HOUSTON. Both of these two Annie's are probably red herrings. It appears the names Robert, Jane, and Annie FULTON were commonplace during the 1800's in Scotland. Here, however, is a familysearch record for Annie's marriage to Peter LEITCH: Annie FULTON Sex: F Marriage(s): Spouse: Peter LEITCH Marriage: 28 Jan 1875 Abbey (paisley), Renfrew, Scotland That is a perfect match for names and year with what my grandfather recorded, and it suggests that "Abbey" and "Paisley" are synonomous. And so my tentative hypothesis to answer your question is that all of the family I mentioned (Robert FULTON, Jane HAMILTON, and Annie FULTON) lived in or around Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland. The first family member to emigrate from Scotland was probably Margaret LEITCH. What do you think of my conclusions? I probably wouldn't have gotten here this quickly had you not asked. Thanks again. Best wishes & regards, Peter Whitlock

    3. Following is a Fulton bio I picked up on the net. Pershaps it will help one of our researchers If memory serves me, this William Fulton has been attributed as the oldest son of Richard & Isabella McChesney Fulton. Williams wife in his will dated N.1, 1781 was Mary - issues were: John, Alexander,James, Elijah, Hugh, Mary, Nancy Ann Irwin <!--StartFragment-->Tom Fulton cafulton@erols.com Elijah Fulton, son of William Fulton of Fawn Township, York County, Pennsylvania, arrived in Clinton Township, Franklin County, Ohio about 1800 as a result of his participation, along with his brothers Hugh, James and John, in the 1791-1795 war fought by General Anthony Wayne against the Ohio Indians that ended August 4, 1795 by treaty. The brothers had travelled down the Ohio River to Limestone, Kentucky, where they entered military service. After the war they moved to Chillicothe, and then to Columbus. In Clinton Township the brothers settled on military lands (Elijah on Township 1, Range 18, United States Military Lands, what is now River Road and Dodridge Street near the Olentanngy River, James on Township 1, Section 3, Range 18). Elijah and his wife Elizabeth Henderson raised 4 children in Franklin Township; William Fulton, my great great grandfather, Mary Fulton, James Fulton, and Margaret Fulton. Elijah Fulton died in November 1813, and is buried in the Union Cemetary near their home. Tom Fulton August 22, 1999
