Dear My 4th great grandads name was David Fulton I think born in scotland 1762 he shows up in the 1800 census for washington county New York . the 1790 census shows a William Fulton and another male between 26-45 and i think that is David as he would have been 27 or 28 in 1790 . any other info would be appreciated he then moved to st lawrence county New York where he died and was buried in Fulton Cemetery near lisbon NY. Died 1822.

Folks, Happy New Year ! I want to thank Pat Stark for the great intro and parts 2 thru 11 on the Fultons of Ontario, NY. I have really been enjoying them tremenously. Well here is my part 1 on mapping - better late than never. As we begin sharing research techniques to solve this mystery of Ernie and Clark's James Wesley Fulton, I feel that we will all learn a lot. By the way, please feel free at anytime to add to this discussion not only about specific information that may help them, but also about research methods or tools that you have found useful in researching. We all learn from each other. You will have to forgive me - before joining IBM as a programmer in the 1980's and continuing as a project manager in the 1990's, my previous career was a school teacher in the 1970's, so this learning/teaching focus still runs deep in my veins. If this discussion is not of interest to you, just delete it. But I think that although you may not be interested in the specific information to help Ernie and Clark, I think that the general methods of how to research that will be an integral thread of this discussion will be useful to everyone. But to benefit from it will require some time on your part. Join us and have fun ! At the Overview session at Salt Lake City, Pat reviewed some basic techniques of how to get started: 1) Start with what you know. 2) Work backward through time. 3) Weigh the evidence on how confident the information is correct. So James Wesley Fulton's pension documents indicate his birth as 3 May 1841 and his sister Cornelia stated her brother was born in Geneva, New York. Where is Geneva, NY in 1841 ? Keep in mind it may or may not be the same place in modern maps. I use the following tools to help me find locations: 1) U.S. Tiger Map Browser http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapbrowse-tbl Search for Geneva, NY and notice that in the U.S. Gazetteer one city and three county subdivisions come up. In this case, their longitude and latitude numbers are all close together. - Browse Tiger Map of Area - Move to a new center by clicking about 2" left of the lake so you will see two of the finger lakes - Notice you can zoom in and out by using the selections on the upper right - Notice on the lower right you can redraw the map and turn on labels. I suggest you experiment turning on one item at a time so you can see how the map changes. I believe the census tracts are the townships, and although I can see their outline in purple, I have not been able to determine how to turn on their names. 2) Geographic Names Information System United States and Territories http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html When dealing with locations that may no longer exist, I like to use the GNIS because sometimes even though the populated place may no longer exist, a feature near its former location such as a creek, a cemetery, a mountain may still cary its name. This helped me once to determine that the birthplace of a Fulton in Rochester, NY in the early 1800s was in Ulster Co (a church, creek, township) and NOT the large city of Rochester, NY in Monroe Co. This is also useful to find a list of certain features as cemeteries, although often the old cemeteries are not listed. To get a list do the following: - Feature Name- leave blank if you do not know its name - State: New York - Feature Type: Cemetery - County: Ontario - Select Send Query button - Select a cemetery - On next screen select Show Feature location and then submit Look up Geneva, New York. All the results listed are in Ontario, Co except for the one Geneva Lake, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co. If the research in Ontario County does not prove to be helpful, I would then look at the Dutchess County, even though it is a lake, because at one time they may have been an inhabited place by the name Geneva that at one time was by the lake but is now obsolete. And I already know there is a Fulton community in the 1800s in Pine Plains. When they list, Geneva Town of, that means a township. The township of Geneva was created from Seneca Township in 1872, but the village of Geneva was incorporated in 1806. So if the city of Geneva is the right place, in 1841 it would be listed in Seneca Township, Ontario Co, New York. 3) U.S. 1895 Atlas http://www.livgenmi.com/1895.htm 4) Mapquest (modern day) http://www.mapquest.com/ 5) Township Atlas of the United States compiled by Jay Androit Document Index, Inc, Box 195, McLean, VA, 1998. Many local libraries have this book that gives the modern day townships for every county in the U.S. I find it helpful to photocopy the counties I am studying. 6) Atlas & Gazetteer for every state by DeLorme Mapping Publishers http://www.delorme.com/ These Atlases are available for each state and cost about $17. Many of them show topographical features, township names and boundaries and lots of physical features. They are excellent. 7) U.S. GenWeb project at: http://www.usgenweb.net/ and select U.S. State Pages or go directly to http://www.usgenweb.net/statelinks.html and select New York, then Ontario County, then maps Look at 1880 maps of Geneva and Stanley (did you see J.P. Fulton at the bottom ?) 8) Ancestry Redbook edited by Alice Eichholz, Salt Lake City, Utah 1992 or The Handybook for Genealogists United States of America, Everton Publishers These two books show the counties for each state and describe the date they were created. 9) Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920 by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide, Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc. Baltimore, 1997. It shows maps of the borders of the counties in each state for each census. In 1800 Ontario Co was from the current modern Ontario but also included most of the counties west of it. Wayne Co was formed from Ontario County and Seneca County in 1823. Thus Lincoln Post Office would have been in Ontario County before 1823. 2) Lincoln is also an obsolete name for a township in current Ontario County, NY. The Township of Easton became Lincoln in April 1806, and Gorham a year later. It is located on the east side of Canandaigua Lake for about a length of seven miles. (History of Ontario County NY and Its People by Charles F. Milliken, Vol 1, Lewis Historical Publ Co, NY 1911, page 50.) I believe this is the Lincoln mentioned in the PA deed. I think the John Fulton of Lincoln, Ontario Co, NY is the same John that appears in the 1800 federal census in Ontario County. Continuing... The identification of two distinct Fulton families living in Ontario County, NY, is very important. While Clark & Ernie are primarily interested in identifying their own Fulton ancestor, the rest of us are wondering if there is any family connection between these two seemingly separate Fulton families. The Pennsylvania Fultons were founding members of the Seneca Presbyterian Church, organized in 1807. The church records identify John Fulton as a founding elder (22 Oct 1807) and James Fulton as a charter member. Two of the known Pennsylvania Fulton brothers, Hugh Fulton and James Fulton are buried in the Seneca Presbyterian Church cemetery (Seneca No. 9 Cemetery). The third brother, John Fulton, who was living in nearby Gorham Twp in 1810 and 1820 disappears. (And another research project is born!) Cemetery Records Hugh Fulton d 22 June 1846, age 82 and wife Rebecca Fulton d 10 March 1846, age 71, buried in same plot along with Rebecca Fulton d 20 June 1842, age 31. James Fulton d 9 May 1849 age 80 and wife Hannah Fulton d 20 Aug 1839, age 55, buried in same plot along with Margaret Fulton d 20 Sept 1841, age 39. Joseph Fulton d 15 April 1862 age 80 and wife Isabella d 15 June 1863 age 84. Florence Wolfe found abstracts of the Hugh Fulton estate papers. Because I knew I'd have a difficult time proving all of this, I made big 11" x 17" photocopies of all three pages and then, because I was in a hurry, I decided to copy the entire Seneca Township (pages 492-513). I even noticed a few extra names on page 490/1 underneath the totals for Phelps Township, so I copied that page too. When I finally sat down to look over all the information, I was astonished to find an UNINDEXED FULTON on page 506! That's right! "John Foulton". (Now you know why I bothered to send the email about spelling variations.) Imagine my excitement! Patrice Scores! MORAL OF THE STORY: Read the original document whenever possible! That $3.00 was the best money I've spent in a long time. Continuing... The Fultons of New York Jane Osterberg, a descendant of William and Martha (Crawford) Fulton of Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY, through their oldest son, Isaac W. Fulton, shared her family research with Roberta Hirth. Now you know the source behind the second Post-It note in Roberta's Fulton database. Based on information supplied by Mrs. Osterberg, Roberta learned that these Fultons lived in New Windsor, Ulster County, New York, prior to 1790. And John Fulton on page 494 is part of the Pennsylvania group... And that's where this research project took a really interesting turn. Roberta wrote: "Pat -- according to Florence's notes, William Fulton is age 26-45 on the 1800 US Census. I asked her to recheck her information and she confirmed that there is a "1" in column 4, age 26-45." So I compared my information to the information sent to me by Clark and Ernie. Sure enough, I had copied it wrong (or had I?) So where did Florence get her information? To settle the matter, I visited the Denver branch of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and pulled out Microfilm "M32", roll 28 (Ontario County, New York). I turned to page 496 and ... this is a very difficult record to read. It's dark and clear enough, but it is a photograph of two pages from a bound book that has been cut apart and laid out flat. The names and the first three columns for males appear on the left-hand side (even number pages, 492, 494, 496, etc.) while the remaining columns appear on the right-hand side (odd number pages). Unfortunately, the two pages are not properly aligned and the record is ambiguous. There are 26 rows of names on the left, and 26 rows of numbers on the right. William Fulton is in row 14. Continuing... Here is information that Clark & Ernie did not know (but made the trip to Salt Lake City so worthwhile!) The Fultons of Pennsylvania On 8 July 1808, Hugh Fulton, farmer, of Lower Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, sold 4 tracts of land and a ferry right in Chanceford Township to George Urey for L700. (York Co Deed B 2T, page 358) This deed further explains that the ferry was purchased on 20 May 1789 by Samuel, Hugh, and John Fulton, in partnership. Hugh Fulton, administrator for Samuel Fulton, deceased, was acting on behalf of John Fulton, now a resident of "Lincoln, Ontario County, New York." Now you know the source behind one of the yellow Post-It notes in Roberta Hirth's Rand-McNally database. Background Back in the 1980s, after years of aimless wandering through genealogy collections, I finally submitted a query to "The Fulton Family Letter" published by the late Robert DeWard Fulton. I received answers from Blanche Tompkins and DeWayne Fulton of California. I learned that I was probably a descendant of David Fulton of Grayson Co, Virginia. Further, I learned that David Fulton was the grandson of Samuel and Elizabeth (Stewart) Fulton of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, through their son, Samuel Fulton. (Don't bother to write that down -- it is SO UNTRUE. I'll explain more about that in another installment.) Excited to learn more about my new-found Fulton ancestors, I read everything I could about the Fultons of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, which is the birthplace of you-know-who, THE Robert Fulton. (No, I'm not related to him, either.) Struggling to find the ancestor of MY Fulton (David), I focused on the Fultons of York County, Pennsylvania. Why? Because in the 1880s, Wm. Henry Egle, MD, a genealogy hobbyist, and historian Samuel Evans, wrote that the sons of Samuel Fulton of Lancaster County settled at York County, before 1790. Trust me on this, some of that last statement is true. Unfortunately, there were a lot of Fultons living in York County, Pennsylvania, in 1790. A lot! I really struggled to sort them out and identify my ancestor, Samuel Fulton [Jr], son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Stewart) Fulton. (Never found him.) In the process, I did identify several distinct Fulton families at York County, PA: James Fulton, d 1772, wife Mary. James Fulton, d 1800, wife Margaret. James Fulton, d 1808, wife Mary. Does this look familiar? Rather than discuss the lengthy proofs, here's the short version: James Fulton, d 1772, wife Mary, was born in Scotland. He is the ancestor of James H. Fulton of Arkansas and Forrest Fulton of California. Dorothy Fulton (AK) and Irene Fulton (CA) have shared a lot of information on this family and traveled with us to Scotland (Fulton Reunion 1995) where they found baptism records, three marriages of James Fulton (or was it four?) and two wives named Mary (or was it three?). This James Fulton is NOT the son of Samuel Fulton of Lancaster Co, PA, but he's certainly an interesting gent, don't you think? James Fulton, d 1808, wife Mary, is James "Fullton", merchant of Philadelphia. This man is interesting because he is a common denominator between almost every Fulton living in Colonial America. (More about him some other time.) He is NOT the son of Samuel Fulton of Lancaster Co, PA -- but he did co-sign a mortgage with James Fulton, the oldest son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Stewart) Fulton, who is: James Fulton, d 1800, wife Margaret. James Fulton died before 4 March 1800, the date his son Samuel Fulton received Letters of Administration (York Co. Admin Bonds, DB 2A, p 278). "Bond for estate of James Fulton, Chanceford Twp, granted to Samuel Fulton, his eldest son, administrator." Unfortunately, Samuel Fulton died before 13 March 1807, the date his brother Hugh Fulton received Letters of Administration (York Co. Admin Bonds, DB 2B, p 421). "Estate of Samuel Fulton single man of Lower Chanceford Township, Hugh Fulton of Lower Chanceford, Administrator...Inventory filed 13 May 1807." So Hugh Fulton had to take care of two estates, his father James Fulton and his older brother, Samuel Fulton, which he completed on 12 August 1808 (York County Administration Accounts). But how, you ask, do I know that THIS James Fulton is the son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Stewart) Fulton of Lancaster Co, PA? Well, you need two separate documents to prove this: (1) The Will of Samuel Cooke of Lancaster County, PA (signed 4 March 1804) provides for his wife (not named) and brothers James Cooke, John Cooke, and David Cooke, and includes a special bequest to the "heirs of James Fulton of Donegal Township." (Recorded 11 April 1804). (2) The Will of Margaret Fulton of Chanceford Twp, York Co, PA (signed 2 October 1804) provides for daughter Mary Fulton, friend Hugh Fulton of Chanceford, and references "a legacy to the testatrix from Samuel Cooke of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania." (York Co. Wills, Book L, p 219, Recorded 19 Feb 1805.) And, just because it's connected, here's one more piece of information, just for good measure: The Will of Joseph Reed of Chanceford Twp, York Co, PA (signed 5 October 1804) provides for (among others) a "granddaughter Margaret Fulton." (York Co. Wills, Book L, p 188, recorded 3 December 1804.) There is no Will on record for James Fulton of Chanceford Twp, York Co, so we don't have a single document that identifies his children. Luckily, James Fulton and family were still residing in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, PA, in 1776, the year a new minister, Rev. Colin McFarquahar arrived from Scotland. As his first order of business, McFarquahar, minister of the Donegal Springs Presbyterian Church, prepared a list of all church members. "Rev. Colin McFarquhar's Catechism Roll, Donegal Springs Presbyterian Church" was transcribed and is included in the multi-volume, "Pennsylvania Archives, 5th Series" collection (1926). Handwriting! Here we go again, the transcriber of the Catechism Roll was unfamiliar with early handwriting and abbreviations. Here is how the transcript appears in print: Family #99: Joseph Fulton Margaret Fulton Samuel Fulton Hugh Fulton John Fulton Joseph Fulton Elizabeth Fulton Checking all surviving tax records and land records of Donegal Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, there is NO Joseph Fulton -- but there IS a James Fulton, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Stewart) Fulton. (The abbreviation for James is Jas, with the "as" above the line. The abbreviation for Joseph is Jos, with the "os" above the line. I contend that this is yet another transcription error and the correct version should be: Family #99: James Fulton Margaret Fulton Samuel Fulton, the eldest son (d bef 1807) Hugh Fulton John Fulton James Fulton Elizabeth Fulton Because widow Margaret Fulton provided for a daughter, Mary Fulton, we can add one more daughter born after 1776. Summary: In 1789, Samuel, Hugh, and John Fulton, partners, purchased a ferry business that crossed the Susquehanna River between Lancaster and York Counties, Pennsylvania. One of the Fulton boys married a daughter of Joseph Reed and had a child, Margaret Fulton, born before 1804. Sometime before 1808, John Fulton moved to Lincoln, Ontario Co, NY. >From the information you have read so far, don't you think that brothers James and Hugh made their way to Ontario County, too? The News-Gazette Tuesday, December 7, 1999 EDNA FULTON Arthur - Funeral services for Edna Barbara Mundorf Fulton, 96, of Arthur will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shrader Funeral home, 431 S. Vine St., Arthur. The Rev. Ralph W. Deal will officiate. Burial will be in Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Fulton died at 10 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999) at The Arthur Home. She was born march 10, 1903, near Marshall, a daughter of George and Katherine Huppert Mundorf. She married Edgar Fulton on March 16, 1934, in Sullivan. He died May 4, 1993. Survivors include a son, Elvon E. Fulton of Sullivan; a daughter, Verlyn K. Rosenberger of Decatur; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters. Mrs. Fulton graduated as valedictorian of Marshall High School in 1922. She attended Charleston Teachers College, now Eastern Illinois University. She was a retired teacher, having taught for more than 34 years in Clark, Douglas and Moultrie counties. She was a member of the Jonathon Creek Household Science Club, a charter member of the Arthur Bible Study Group and a member of First Baptist Church of Arthur. I am happy to report that my DOS-based genealogy software displays "1 Jan 2000" and Roberta's Post-It note database still sticks. I've been given the "OK" to share the rest of our Ontario County genealogy saga. Our beloved Webstress Hirth writes, "No need for me to preread your new installments -- go ahead and post them. Folks are home for the holidays and will have time to study and enjoy them." Besides, Roberta says she is "slightly 'groggy' from getting to bed after 3am last night after a New Year's Eve party." Who was the father of James Fulton who appears on Page 107 of the 1840 US Census of Seneca Twp, Ontario County, New York? What do we know about James Fulton (p 107) in the 1840 US Census? You need to go back to the bottom of Part 3 where you'll find the exact household information extracted by Clark & Ernie. (In Part 4 we eliminated the James S. Fulton household.) James Fulton (p 107) was reportedly 20-30 years old (b 1810-1820) and there was a 20-30 year old female living in the house, probably his wife. There were two children under 5 years old, a boy and a girl. Estimating 2 years per child, I'd guess that James Fulton married in 1835. If we further assume that he was 20 years old when he married, we're looking for a male born in 1815. Which Fulton household has a male age 15 in 1830? Because of the odd age categories, we have to look for any household with a male in either column 3 or 4. 1830 US Census index, Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY (Accel. Intermission. Have you ever seen the Roberta Hirth laptop database? It's a Rand McNally map of the United States with about a zillion Post-It notes. I assure you, it is Y2K compliant. Now the Stark Reality database, on the other hand, is an old DOS-based genealogy program containing over 10,000 documented Fulton entries. I'll tell you tomorrow if it is Y2K compliant. When we started the "Clark & Ernie" ancestor search, the first step was to narrow down the geographic search area. Roberta carefully opened her map to New York and lo and behold, there were two yellow notes in the same general area. (Actually, there were many yellow notes on the New York page, but there were just two in Ontario County, New York.) The first note identified some Fultons from New Windsor, Ulster County, New York (Hirth/Wolfe research). The second note identified some Fultons from Chanceford, York County, Pennsylvania (Stark/JLFultonJr research). Perhaps now you understand why Roberta and I jumped on this particular genealogy question. By pooling information from our collective databases, we quickly realized that two separate Fulton families settled in the same remote area of New York on the eve of 1800. The New Yorkers: William Fulton and family and widow Elizabeth Fulton and family, who appear in sequential entries on the 1790 US Census, appear in the 1800 US Census of Ontario County. The Pennsylvanians: John Fulton appears on the 1800 US Census of Ontario County and his brother Hugh joins him around 1806/7. OK, I admit it. Roberta and I have written a new "burning question": are these two families related? But Clark and Ernie are waiting for the answer to their question: Who is the daddy of James Fulton (page 107) of Seneca Twp, Ontario County, NY? Continuing... We're looking for the 1840 James Fulton household in Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY, with a female under 5 (Cornelia M. Fulton, b 1837). Based on the actual 1840 US Census (not the index), we have identified two possible James Fulton households. Which household is it? James S. Fulton (p105) or James Fulton (p107)? I suspect the 1850 census index prepared by Accelerated Indexing is in error. There is a good chance that "James L Fulton" identified in the 1850 index is actually "James S Fulton" and is the same man we found in the 1840 Census. Why? In 1850, the script letter "S" looked a lot like today's script letter "L". Many typed transcripts of records from this period mistake a capital "S" with a capital "L". (For example, my ancestor, Sena Fulton, has been identified as "Lena", "Tena", even "Lence" Fulton on typed transcripts of early records.) If James S. and James L. Fulton are the same person, then we can eliminate this man as the father of Cornelia M. and James Wesley Fulton. (And, conversely, speculate that James Fulton on page 107 is the father of James Wesley Fulton, b 1841.) How do I determine whether James "S" Fulton and James "L" Fulton are the same person? Here's where our very own ROOTSWEB really shines for genealogy research. Go to the US Genealogy Web (http://www.usgenweb.com) and look at web page for Ontario County, NY. Click on "Census" and you will find links to the 1860 and 1870 US Census index (sorry -- just for Ontario County, NY). You will also finds links to the 1855 and 1865 New York State Census index -- a really great find for our particular question. It certainly does appear that the 1850 US Census index prepared by Accelerated Indexing, is in error. The entry should read "James S. Fulton." Of course, if you have access to microfilms of the 1850 US Census, you could simply look at the entry and read it for yourself. (Which is exactly what Clark and Ernie did!) So what do we know? The James Fulton on page 107 of the 1840 US Census for Seneca Township, Ontario Co, NY, is probably the father of Cornelia M. and James Wesley Fulton. But who was his daddy? Just a note that might be of interest to someone. I've been tracing the Wickenberg family and my Johan Alfred (Albert) Wickenberg married a Helma C Olhin. They had a son George E Wickenberg, b. 1892. That year the father ran away. In 1897, Helma filed for divorce saying no-one knew where the father was. She is found on the 1900 Census married to Leander Fulton. I assume he is the Leander Fulton in the Fulton Genealogy book. Though it does not have anything more on Leander's life. 1900, Lead, Lawrence Co. SD Census: Fulton, Leander, b. July 1865 Canada, age 34, in U.S. 18 years, parents born in Canada; Helma C, wife, b. Oct 1866 Sweden, age 33, in U.S. 9 years, parents born in Sweden; Wickenburg, George E, son, b. It should be pretty easy to find a James Fulton family with these two children in the 1850 US Census for New York. Using the Accelerated Indexing census index published by Vern R. Jackson, et al (Bountiful, Utah), I found the following Fultons in Seneca Twp, Ontario County, NY (Roberta will explain why we're looking at Seneca Twp.) Patrice is right: you may be able to prove that a "Fullerton" is indeed a "Fulton," but "Fullerton" is a diff. name entirely, coming from the western Highlands, w/ trad. associations with Clan Stewart of that area. "Fullerton" prob. derives from "fuller," someone who works with woven tweed. In the thirteen-century land records I have seen for Ayrshire, the common spelling is "Foulton."
