Here's some info on the Wynkoop/Wyncoop family in early NY. They married into my DePuy line, but this is the same line that Roberta referred to earlier today. Hope it helps someone! Celia First Generation - ------------------------------------------- 1. Peter WYNKOOP (WYNCOOP), 9G Grandfather. Born ca 1610. From Holland in the Rensselaerwyck, 1639, settled in Manhattan 1644[1] 1642: "Pieter Wyncoop, commis."[2] [3]The name seems to signify "wine buyer" --- that is, wine-merchant. A different meaning is given by Mr. Munsell, who says that it signifies "something to drink upon the bargain." (Annals of Albany, iii.; 60) but this appears to be mistaken etymology. The motto of the family, preserved upon some old plate is "Virtutem Hilaritate Colere," - to adorn excellence with joyousness. Good principles with geniality seem to be preferred to somber correctness. The family name is borne by a bay on the southerly coast of Java, near the westerly end of the island. This seems to be a memento of a Merchant or of a navigator. In the United States of America, the name is found in 1642, when Peter Wynkoop settled at Rensselaerwyck, now Albany, New York. He was then "commissary Superintendent of Wares and merchandise" for the patroon Van Rensselaer (A. of A., i., 22; Hist. N. Neth., i., 440) In 1644, Peter Wynkoop was Supercargo of the vessel Arms of Rensselaerwyck, and arrived with her at Manhattan, she having been dispatched the previous autumn by the patroon, to his colony. Kieft, the Governor, demanded from him, shoes for the soldiers, who were then engaged in a war with the Indians of the neighborhood of Hempstead, Long Island. Wynkoop refused to supply them; Kieft siezed the shoes and ordered the vessel to be searched; and, finding powder and guns, which were not on the manifest, he declared them contraband, and confiscated the vessel and cargo. Wynkoop protested. He also sued the Fiscaal at Fort Amsterdam. The vessel and cargo, were released however, by agreement, and the case was referred for settlement to the Directors in Holland. The vessel soon after sailed. (History of New York, Brodhead, i., 390; History of New Netherlands, i, 339; Annals of Albany, i., 196-199; iv., 56.) It does not appear whether Wynkoop returned with the vessel, or remained in this country. In the same year Peter Wynkoop was commissioned by the patroon to purchase from the natives land about Catskill; and in connection with the Commissary General, Arendt Van Curler, to recover lands, etc., which had been purchased, and misappropriated by a former agent, Adrian Van der Donck. (History of New Netherlands, i., 339.) Child: 2 i. Cornelius (ca1627-ca1676) Second Generation - ------------------------------------------- 2. Cornelius WYNCOOP (WYNKOOP), 8G Grandfather. Born ca 1627 in Netherlands. Cornelius died ca 1676; he was 49. "Random Notes Concerning Settlers of Dutch Descent," by William J. Hoffman, M.Mech.Eng., Laplume, Pa." pg 111-A group of prospective farmers, twelve in number, was engaged by Jan Van Rensselaer in 1651, who were natives of villages within a five mile radius of Amersfoort. There was 14-year-old Elbert Elbertsz from Nykerk (not the ancestor of the Stoothoff family of the same name and origin who was born about 1620 and settled here in 1637), who, though the youngest, had for fellow travelers Paulus Paulusz from Amersfoort, 15 years old, Ryck Claes from Nykerk, 16 years old, and Cornelis Jansz from Bunschoten, also 16 years old. What an experience for the youngsters, to sail for the New World expecting to see the Indians who would later murder one of their fellow passengers. Another passenger was Cornelis Evertsz Wynkoop, 24 years old, from the "Buuarschap Wyckerom by Eeden." This establishes the origin, age, and the father's name, all heretofore unknown, of this well known family in American. In my article [N.Y. Record, 1934:331; 1935:68] devoted to the arms of this family, I enumerated several bearers of this surname found in the records of Gelderland (to which I have since been able to add others). I mentioned Evert Wincoop, who was living in 1585, and also one Reynier Evertsz Wijncoop whose widow Diele van Morseler was mentioned in 1609, then aged 85, hence born about 1524. It is possible that he may be identified with Rev. Reynier Wijncoop, formerly a priest who had been converted to Protestantism and had become a minister at Barnevelt. He died in 1602. There is also mention of Styne Elbertsd [Evertsdr?], wife of Gerrit van Mehen and a sister of Reynier van Wyncoop (possibly the above) who sued Evert Wyncoop in 1580. These are excellent leads for a further investigation concerning the ancestry of the American settler, Cornelis Evertsz Wynkoop, born about 1627. The above cited records prove that the American Wynkoops belong to the Gelderland family of this name and not to the family of the same name from Hoorn as the late Mr. de Young, a Dutch genealogist in the United States, propounded."[2] [3]Cornelius Wynkoop, in 1671, was Elder of a Dutch Church at Esopus over which Hermanus Blom had labored as pastor. On the 25th of April, 1663, he received a grant of twelve morgens of land at Esopus, Ulster County., (H. N. N., ii., 592.) The morgen seems to have been equivalent to a little more than two acres. This land is said to have been at New Dorp, now Hurley. He removed from Albany to Hurley in 1664. The same year he hired some land of Albert Gysbert, for the price of a pair of horses - 400 guilders. His wife was Marritje Jans. The baptismal records of some of their children have been found at Kingston. She is said to be the "Orphan Daughter," whose name is recorded in a list of immigrants from Holland, who arrived in the Gilded Beaver, March 1660 (Documentary History of New York, O'Callaghan, iii., 56) Marritje Jansen, maiden, arrived on the Love, in the same month. (Same authority.) The names Marritje, Maria, and Mary, are said to be the same. (Annals of Albany, iii., 114.) This leaves the question of identity open. She was still living in 1678, as her name appears in that year in a list of church members. In 1673, he was Schepen of Hurley, Ulster County. (Documents Relating to the Colonial History of New York, ii., 626.) On the 5th of February, 1674, he witnessed the signatures of Indian Sachems to a treaty with Col. Nicolls (Collections of the Ulster Historical Society, i., 63.) He died in 1674. Cornelius married Maria Jane LANGEDYCK, 8G Grandmother, daughter of Jan LANGEDYCK & Gertje JANSZEN. Born ca 1640. Maria Jane died in 1679; she was 39. They had the following children: 3 i. Maria (1660-<1724) ii. Evert, 8G Uncle. Evert married Gertrude ELMENDORF. Third Generation - ------------------------------------------- 3. Maria WYNCOOP (WYNKOOP), 7G Grandmother. Born on 4 Jul 1660 in Ft. Orange, Albany, NY. Maria died in Albany, Albany, NY bef 17 Oct 1724; she was 64. In 1680 when Maria was 19, she married Moses DEPUY, 7G Grandfather, son of Nicholas DEPUY (DEPUI) (1629-1691) & Catherine LE RENARD DEVOS (DEVAUX) (ca 1630-1705). Born on 15 Aug 1660 in Leiden, Holland. Moses died in Rochester, Ulster, NY in 1752; he was 91. Moses was born at sea and became a captain of a merchant ship. He happened to visit Kingston, met Maria Wynkoop, and "the ship not going, came again and married." They settled on her family land in Rochester and survived a huge flood in 1689 by spending 3 days and nights in the barn on high ground. Moses was a Justice of the Peace, and with Jochem Schoonmaker, "held the patent of the town of Rochester, given 1703 by Queen Anne." There were four intermarriages among the Moses DePuy and Jochem Schoonmaker families.[4] They had the following children: i. Moses (<1691-1769) ii. Benjamin (1695-) iii. Susanna (1695-) iv. Jacobus (1702-) v. Johannes (1705-) vi. Catherine (Catrina) (ch. 1701-) vii. Catherrina (Catharina) (ch. 1684-) viii. Catrina (ch. 1690-) ix. Cornelis (ch. 1688-) x. Magdelene (ch. 1686-) xi. Folks, I have been reading through letters Jane Osterberg has sent to me over the years and trying to retype the key information on her William Fulton so I can put it on our discussion list (she does not have internet access). It will be a while before I have completed that goal (as usual too much overtime at my day job). But one of the items that she mentions is the Wyncoop/Wynkoop relationship with her family, and this should be of immediate interest to many on this discussion list. As outlined below, William FULTON's son Isaac married Annetje BRITT, who is the grandaughter of Capt.Tobias Wyncoop/Wynkoop (1717-1786) and Leah Legg who resided in Saugerties, NY. Saugerties is about 12 mile north of Kingston, NY. I am just going to provide some sketchy outline of Jane Osterberg's Fulton line to provide a frame of reference for this note. 1 William FULTON b 1755-1765 or b before 1755 (based on conflicting census analysis), b 1757 based on Rev War muster roll d ca 1810/1820 in Ontario Co, NY 1774 resided New Windsor,Ulster Co, current Orange County, NY 1790 Census in New Windsor, Ulster Co, NY with Elizabeth FULTON next door. 1800 Census resided at Seneca Twp, Ontario Co, NY + Martha CRAWFORD,m. 25 March 1788 at New Windsor Presb Ch, NY d 1825 2 Isaac W. Niece of Annetje WYNCOOP who marries Christian MYER, a 2nd Lt. in the Rev War in the Albany 11 Regmt in Capt David Abeel's Company. Granddau of Capt.Tobias WYNCOOP/ WYNKOOP(1717-1786) and Leah LEGG who resided in Saugerties, NY. Annetje WYNCOOP was a sister to Leah WYNCOOP. Jane thinks that the marriage between Annetje and Isaac W. Fulton was an arranged marriage. Wyncoops appear in the same regiment in which William Fulton of Ulster Co, NY served during the Revolutionary War. Annetje Britt's uncle, Peter Wynkoop, lives in the same area as Isaac Fulton in Seneca Township, Ontario Co, NY. Clearly the Fultons and Wyncoops in Ulster/Orange counties NY move to the same area in Ontario Co, NY. Jane brought to my attention an entry from the book, Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America by Richard Wynkoop, 3rd edition, The Knickerbocker Press, New York, 1904. (Copy available at the New York Genealogical Biographical Library, NYC, G W 9892.) It makes some exciting revelations. They were among the chief supporters of Kaatsbaan church. The last will of Tobias, as of Blue Mountains, Ulster County, dated November 10, 1785, proved September 8 1786, mentions his wife Leah, his sons, Hezekiah, Tobais, Petrus, and William, and his daughters, Leah and Anntje. But the need of constant watchfulness against the savages worried him and he sold his place and purchased land about fifteen miles northeast of Philadelphia. He left three sons, David, Robert, James, who removed to Virginia, and settled in Frederick and Loudon counties. He also had a daughter, Hestor, who married a Mr. Middleton. Robert Fulton married, in Pennsylvania, a woman named Wyncoop, a descendant of an ancient family in Germany or Holland, wine merchants - hence the name, from wine and cup. A cane, in possession of one of the family, in 1824, is inscribed with their coat of arms, a merchant holding a cup of wine in his hand. For details search the Fulton-L archives for "steamboat" and "myth". But what I want to focus on in this note is the Wyncoop/Fulton connection. Has anyone found the David Fulton manuscript written in 1855 ? It is of great interest - this potential migration path of Fultons from 100 miles northeast of Boston to Pa (this very well may actually be the current Londonderry, NH area - in Ruth Coan's book page one she makes reference to the Robert Fulton of Boston purchasing land in Londonderry NH in 1759 from a Matthew Wright) to the Manor of Mooreland, PA. In the 9 Dec 1756 Penn Gazette, a David Fulton of Cheltenham Twp, Phil Co, PA announces he is missing a horse which had been brought to his present home from Bordontown, NJ. These Fultons sure loved their horses (most likely racing horses)! Remember the James Fulton in Va with the horse from New England ? Even my grandfather in the early 1900s loved to race his horses against other farmers in a small community in Sullivan Co, NY. If you have additional information on other Wyncoop/Fulton relationships, please share them on the list with us. Often it is necessary to study the entire forest to understand the individual trees in the forest, and I feel that the Wyncoop connection will open up some new doors for many of us. Roberta R. To All, I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank Patrice Stark, Roberta Hirth, and everyone else involved for their work on this project. Without it I am sure I would still be trying to find out which way to turn next. Clark and I went to Salt Lake City with just a few bits and pieces of information on James Wesley Fulton and now in less than two months we have many new friends and a whole lot of new evidence to research and prove. At least now we have a direction to look. I plan to send a series of Emails to the list to fill in the beginning of the story so that everyone will have a better idea of the trials and tribulations we went through just to have the information ready for the Salt Lake City Fulton Family Reunion. Samuel Fulton and Hugh Fulton were brothers..." The migration path of the Va Fultons may overlap the migration path of your Rachel Fulton's ancestors, so learning about the VA Fultons may help. I am assuming that you have already "dragnetted" for information in Bath Co, KY for all census, deeds, wills, church/cemetery, tax, obits/newsp, for both FULTON and CRAYCRAFT, with no leads and now need to expand to counties nearby. Dear HC: Thank you for correcting my obvious error, Cass County (formerly Van Buren County) Missouri! It's good to have a proof reader. While in Salt Lake City, our guest speaker, John Kitzmiller, reviewed some important genealogy basics. One interesting point he made was to look for naming patterns. He suggesting drawing quick "drop-down" charts and then circling names that are the same. I tried it and was surprised to find an obvious pattern between your Creed ancestor and my Fulton family. A "drop-down" chart is simply a quick sketch of the family tree. Something like this... _________Father/Mother__________ | | | | | | | | Child1 Child2 Child3 Child4 and so forth. Here's what I found when I tried it. I can't really draw it here -- Arthur and Naomi (Jones) Fulton were the parents of 12 children. I found an interesting link between Child #1 and Child #7. Child #1, Nancy Fulton, married Thornton Jefferson Creed in 1822. Child #7, Darthulla Fulton, married her cousin Raleigh Jefferson Fulton in 1836. (Raleigh is the son of Arthur's brother, William Fulton.) Raleigh and Darthulla named their first (and only) child, Jefferson Creed Fulton. I suspect that Nancy and Darthulla were very close and that this baby boy was named in honor of Thornton Jefferson Creed. So tell me, what can you tell me about the Creed family? I'm particularly interested in any descendants who were living in Barry County, Missouri, in 1860. My gr-gr-grandfather enlisted in the Missouri State Guard at Barry County and I'm trying to figure out how he came to be in that area at that particular time. Continuing... Another installment in the ongoing saga of ... "Who are the Fulton ancestors of Clark and Ernie Fulton?" In our previous episodes, we have learned that two groups of Fultons, one from Pennsylvania and the other from New York, came to Ontario County, New York, prior to 1800. The Pennsylvanians It does not appear that Clark and Ernie are connected to the Pennsylvanians. Of the three brothers, John, Hugh, and James, John settled over at Lincoln (now Gorham) in 1807 and is still living there at the time of the 1810 and 1820 census. John Fulton has a large family and that is clearly another research project. Hugh Fulton (1764-1846) and James Fulton (1769-1849) stayed in Seneca Township and are buried in the Presbyterian Church cemetery. Hugh was a possible ancestor to Clark and Ernie but was eliminated when it was discovered that he had no son named James. James Fulton (1769-1849) was never a candidate as he did not have a son of the proper age in 1820. Joseph Fulton (1782-1862) was also eliminated because he had no males in his household in 1820. (By the way Roberta, I agree that Joseph Fulton, (1782-1862) is too old to be the son of Hugh and Rebecca (-?-) Fulton, well -- he's clearly too old to be the son of Rebecca, (b 1775). Where does Joseph (b 1782 in PA) fit in? Again, this is another research project.) By 1850, there were only three Fulton households left in Seneca Township, all connected to the Pennsylvanians. Joseph H. Fulton, wife Clarissa, and two children (Son of Hugh) James S. Fulton, wife Margaret A., and four children (Son of Hugh) Joseph Fulton and wife Isabella (Son of ???) By 1850, the descendants of the New Yorkers are gone. The New Yorkers After reading the REAL 1800 Census (and finding the extra John "Foulton") we learned that the New York contingent started with three Fulton households, widow Elizabeth Fulton (with 1 male age 10-16), William Fulton and family, and John Fulton, newly married with 1 male under 10. The 1825 indenture between the heirs of William Fulton and Philip Gregory, identified all of William's children proving he did not have a son named Joseph D. Fulton. None of William Fulton's sons appear in later Seneca Township census indexes (1830, 1840, 1850). However, we do know that William's oldest son, Isaac W. Fulton, settled in Michigan before 1840. Remember? Clark & Ernie's ancestor, James Wesley Fulton, died in Brighton, Livingston County, Michigan. Through the process of elimination, we know that Joseph D. Fulton is the only Fulton living in Seneca Township in 1820 that could be the ancestor of Cornelia M. and James Wesley Fulton. We have only three choices. Are Clark & Ernie descendants of: (1) The Pennsylvania Fultons (NO) (2) The New York Fultons (MAYBE) (3) A Gypsy wagon train with no connection to either group (MAYBE) Before I accept the Gypsy wagon train theory, I want to eliminate the young male living with Elizabeth Fulton in 1800. But I can't, because this male could easily be Joseph D. Fulton. What? How did you figure that? According to the 1790 US Census, Elizabeth Fulton was the head of house and there were two males "under 16" living in the household. Male1, under 16 born bet 1775 and 1790 Male2, under 16 born bet 1775 and 1790 John Fulton (p 494) in the 1800 US Census is age 20-30, born between 1770 and 1780. He could be Male1 living with Elizabeth in 1790. In 1800, this John Fulton is living with a female 20-30 and a male under 10, born 1790-1800. John Fulton looks like a newlywed to me and the young male in this household is too young to be Joseph D. Fulton. What became of this John Fulton and his family? That's another research project. In 1800, Elizabeth Fulton was still listed as the head of house and there was one male "10-16" living in the household. I think it is likely that she died between 1800-1810 and the male living in her household moved in with one of his relatives in the area. Joseph D. Fulton, first appears in the 1820 census, age 26-45 (b between 1776 and 1794). His age is consistent with Male2 living in the Elizabeth Fulton household in 1790, and Male1 living in the Elizabeth Fulton household in 1800. Using the age ranges for both census years, we know that the male in this household was born between 1785 and 1790. 1820 Joseph D. Fulton, 26-45 (b 1776-1794) 1830 Joseph D. Fulton, 40-50 (b 1780-1790) 1840 Joseph Fulton, 50-60 (b 1780-1790) All evidence suggests that Joseph D. Fulton was born between these years. Where was Joseph D. Fulton living in 1810? That's hard to say and will require more research. If he was born between 1785 and 1790, then he came "of age" (age 21) between 1806 and 1811. There may not be any Will for widow Elizabeth Fulton because there is no evidence that she owned land (Elizabeth Fulton does not appear as a grantor in the Deed Book Index.) Conclusion? Clark & Ernie Fulton appear to be part of the New Yorkers who came to Ontario County before 1800. Their ancestor James Wesley Fulton, b 1841, and his sister Cornelia M. Fulton, born 1837, are the children of a James Fulton who married around 1835. By the process of elimination, Joseph D. Fulton is the only resident of Seneca Township in 1820 that could be the ancestor of James Fulton. Joseph D. Fulton died tragically in 1842 and his family disappears from the county shortly after that time. This would explain why the young children of James Fulton (Male1 b 1836-1840, Cornelia M., and James W.) did not share the name of their grandfather in oral traditions. (I'll bet the fireworks story was handed down, though.) Is the information I've presented considered "proof?" It depends upon the lineage society you are trying to join. It's true, we have not yet located marriage, birth, death documents. However, the weight of the evidence supports our conclusions. This is what is called a "preponderance of evidence" proof. It could use some more refinement, but I'll leave that to the descendants. There are still many questions to answer. Clark & Ernie asked one question. Now there are 10 or more questions in all different directions. That's what is so maddening about genealogy, or is that why genealogy is so addictive? Whenever you finally identify one ancestor, it's hard not to say, "but who was his daddy?" Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

His age would suggest he could be a child of James or John or Hugh. I do not believe he is a child of Hugh because Hugh already has a child Joseph H Fulton with wife Clarissa. And Joseph b ca 1782 has a wife Isabella. And Clarissa appears as wife to Joseph H in a deed 1847. Based on the tombstone inscription, Isabella is still alive in 1847. So that is why Joseph H Fulton cannot be the same man as Joseph b ca 1782. And being a member of the Pres Church, he would not adhere to taking multiple wives. 3 James FULTON (my conjecture brother to Hugh Fulton b ca 1764 in PA) b ca 1769, d 9 May 1849 age 80 buried in Seneca Pres Cemetery charter member of Seneca Pres Church 1807 perhaps this is the James who deeded land to John Hine in 1798 that is directly north of J.P. I believe you had conjectured that Rebecca b ca 1775 in PA who is the wife of Hugh FULTON ba ca 1764 in PA might be a REED. Is it possible that instead it might relate to the James and Hannah since there is a Margaret Fulton (do not know if she is a daughter) who is buried in their plot in the Seneca Number 9 Cemetery in Ontario Co, NY. REED is listed as a geographic feature in Ontario County. We will have to see if there are REEDS in Ontario Co, NY who might shed some light on this family. 3 John FULTON (my conjecture brother to Hugh Fulton b ca 1764 in PA) founding elder of Seneca Pres Ch 22 Oct 1807 I believe the John mentioned in the York Co PA ferry right in 1808 who resides in Lincoln, NY at that time + Hannah also joined church 22 Oct 1807 ** Note 2: Capt John Rippey MAY help us to tie together the PA and NY Fultons in terms of being an acquaintance to both groups. His grandaughter is married into the PA line as shown above. And the Ontario history books says he was always with George Washington. Since George Washington wintered his army at the New Winsdor Cantonment, which is a few miles from where William Fulton and possible his mother/aunt Elizabeth Fulton lived in the 1790 census, and since William was in the Revolutionary War, he may have known Capt Rippey. Based on Gen Sullivan's campaigns in the Revolutionary War in upstate New York, the soldiers were familiar with the land in the Ontario Co, NY area. It was incredibly rich and fertile and became available for sale very cheaply in 1789. I have read accounts where new land in Ohio was settled by Revolutionary War soldiers from different states, but it turns out they were all buddies in the Continental Army. That may be a factor in the settlement of Ontario Co, NY. Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 FULTON web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm
I, too am a descendant of Arthur Fulton and Naomi Powell Jones through their daughter, Nancy Powell Jones who married Thornton Jefferson Creed in Rhea Co. TN 29 Aug 1822. Their daughter, Sarah Jane Creed and Henry Clay Snyder are my 2-G Grandparents. A small correction Van Buren became Cass County. Harrisonville is the county seat. For those tracing Arthur Fulton or his line in Cass County, please remember it was heavily affected by the Civil War. General Order #11 caused the removal of a large percentage of the population, particularly those originally from the South. Many never returned there. I am very interested in Arthur Fulton and Naomi Powell Jones and would be pleased to correspond with other descendants. HC Snyder
Here's a wonderful tidbit sent by Margaret Dequine. (Small world, isn't it?) "My gggrandmother, Sidney Howard Nelson Davison, was reportedly the first white child born in Geneva Ontario Co. I have a book called, Genealogical Gleanings Abstracted from the Early Newspapers of Penn Yan, Yates County, New York - Compiled by Dianne Stenzel 19991. Item 780 is as follows: Joseph D. Fulton, killed 4 Jul 1842 at Geneva, Ontario Co., during the Independence Day fireworks celebration. Mr. Fulton was standing near a box of fireworks, which was somehow ignited by a spark. When box exploded and Mr. Fulton was so badly burned, he died within a few hours. (12 Jul 1842)" Just a new element to add to the mystery!!!" Thank you, Margaret! - --------------------------------------------------------- Where does Joseph D. Fulton fit into the picture? Is he part of the New Yorkers or the Pennsylvanians? The New Yorkers are on the first 3 pages of the census and the Pennsylvanians "John Foulton" are 3 pages from the end. The heirs, who sold part of Lot #50 containing 60 acres, were identified as: Isaac W. Fulton and wife Hannah Thomas C. Fulton Abraham S. Fulton Ira Lockwood and Elizabeth [Fulton] his wife Ellison Fulton Robert Fulton, deceased None of these names appear in the 1830, 1840, or 1850 Census suggesting they left Ontario County. We know that Isaac W. Fulton settled in Locke Twp, Ingham Co, Michigan. Their son, Robert Fulton, b 1819, in NY, was named for the deceased brother, Robert (suggesting he died before 1920.) By the way, I found the death record for this Robert Fulton, son of Isaac, on line through the Gratiot County, Michigan, web site! At this point, I think we can eliminate William and Martha (Crawford) Fulton as the parents of Joseph D. Fulton. Poor Joseph. I'll always think of him as Joseph who died on the 4th of July. Sort of like Thomas Jefferson Fulton who was born on the 4th of July, 1776. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

Happy New Year, Irene! Irene Fulton of California helped me out regarding all the wives of James Fulton who died 1772 at Hopewell Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. She tactfully noted that I made a teensy mistake. (God bless you, Irene.) James Fulton had one wife named Mary and two wives named Jean. [If you're taking notes, go back to Part 7 and correct this line: James Fulton, d 1772, wife Mary. to James Fulton, d 1772, wife Jean/Jane. And then fix this sentence in the next paragraph: James Fulton, d 1772, wife "Jean", was born in Scotland.] Irene was part of a foursome that followed our Fulton Reunion bus all over Northern Ireland back in 1995. We referred to them as the "tail gate party" and finally ditched, er lost, them somewhere in Ayrshire, Scotland -- only to learn that they had stumbled upon the genealogy bonanza of a Fulton lifetime. The descendants of James Fulton traveled from America to Scotland to read their ancestor's birth, baptism, marriage and death records! It was a great find, and no one ever questioned their decision to leave our party. And, yes, this James Fulton married THREE times. >From Irene: One small correction in your informative report on the James Fultons of York County PA. James Fulton who died 1772 had 3 wives: m1 Mary Willson married 31 Oct 1710 m2 Jean Lermont married 21 Mar 1727 m3 Jean Smith married 26 married 1736 Irene adds this postscript: "This is the James Fulton in the IGI as being born ca 1701. Needless to say the person with that guess did not find him with two other marriages." (Agreed) How many of you have ever considered that your elusive Fulton ancestor had three different wives? And who could guess that wife 2 and wife 3 were both named Jean? If you can trace your Fulton ancestry to Hopewell Township, York County, PA, you may want to consider this James Fulton. The Will of James Fulton, 1772, identifies his wife Jean and 7 children: (1) John Fulton (2) James Fulton (3) William Fulton (4) Janet Fulton (5) Andrew Fulton (6) David Fulton (7) Hugh Fulton The Will of Jean Fulton, 1777, Jean (Smith) Fulton, identifies only the last three children: (5) Andrew Fulton (6) David Fulton (7) Hugh Fulton, deceased This Fulton family traveled from Scotland to America circa 1755. Andrew Fulton sold his interest in his inheritance and moved his family to western Pennsylvania. Brother David Fulton stayed in York County where he died in 1826. David Fulton was the father of 11 children (2 wives) and because David died intestate, you will find extensive records on his children in the Orphan's Court records. James Fulton was a founding member of the Guinston Associate Presbyterian Church, one of the first and the absolute last "Associate" Presbyterian Church in America. (Merged in 1858 with the "United Presbyterian Church.") As for the four older children? Irene and I have been discussing them for years. I think at least two of them came to America, but I defer to Irene who is truly the authority on this line. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

What is your source of proof that Robert and Isabella are her parents ? The Widow Agnes line was well documented by Robert Fulton, late editor of The Fulton Family Letter, who researched the Widow Agnes line and published a book called "The Family of Agnes Fulton" in 1980 and a revision in 1988. The LDS Salt Lake City US/CAN Film area 1321152 item 5. Its catalog describes it as follows: "Agnes Fulton (1750-1826) with her four sons immigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1794, and settled in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nebraska, California, Louisiana, Florida and elsewhere. Includes Fulton, Blankenbaker, Flitcraft, Hendrick, Hunsicker, Meyers and related families." The Fulton Family Newsletter has much information on this line. For those not familiar with "The Widow Agnes," she came to America in 1794 with four sons, landing in Philadelphia after a voyage of thirteen weeks and three days. From there they went to Westmoreland County, where Robert, one of the sons, died. They remained there until the spring of 1801, when they, with other families in the same vicinity, moved to what is now Clarion County, PA, settling near the town of Clarion. The other three sons were James, Henry, and Cochran. Some believe that Agnes knew Abraham and Margaret (Guthry/Guthrie) Fulton who settled at Westmoreland Co. prior to 1780. These Fultons sailed from near Coleraine, [Northern] Ireland in 1772. In a note 5 May 1997, Pat Stark wrote: "You may wish to study the history of the Presbyterian Church. The widow Agnes Fulton family was closely tied to the "Associate Presbyterian Church" also known as the "Seceders." The graves are carefully tended at Clarion Co. in the Seceder Cemetery. While visiting the original church in Articlave, Northern Ireland, we learned that many Fultons were members of the nearby Associate Presbyterian Church known as the 2nd Dunboe Church. If Agnes was from this area, this was probably her home church." A Fulton reunion was held in 1995 in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Arthur Fulton (1783-186?), second son of David Fulton of Grayson Co, VA, moved to Rhea Co, TN, around 1817. He remained in this area until about 1837 and then moved to Harrisonville, Cass County (now Van Buren County) MIssouri. Blanche Tompkins and Sally Mayberry are direct descendants of Arthur and his wife Naomi Ann Jones. Blanche and I spent most of our time in Salt Lake City researching Arthur, his children, his brothers and other connections in Rhea County, TN. Why do you ask?
