    3. Folks, Enclosed are some more references to a David Fulton around the Philadelphia, PA area. It looks as though we are dealing with several generations of David Fulton in this area. This thread is really becoming fascinating. As I dig through some of the papers I copied at Salt Lake City, I will provide more updates. I think we are going to have to put the collected facts in chronological order to see how they sort out. Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 FULTON web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm ****************************************************************** Chris Kolda (cfkolda@lbl.gov) has a web site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kolda/ that describes James & Anastasia [Tuel] Fullton of York County, South Carolina. His site states the following: "James B. Fullton Born: Jan 21, 1765 in Bordentown, Burlington Co, NJ Married: May 27, 1787 to Anastasia Tuel in Montgomery Co, MD by Rev. James Hunt Died: April 26, 1848 in Yorkville, York District, SC James B. Fullton was born and spent the first 6 years in Bordentown, Burlington Co, NJ [1], the son of a tailor, Robert Fullton and his wife, Catherine Sparburn. Catherine's death at or shortly after James' birth forced his father to remarry before James was 6 months old; thus he was raised by his step-mother, Mary Roger Fullton [2]." continuing on... "Finally, the large mystery remains of where Robert and Catherine came from. The name Sparburn is highly unusual -- so much so that I can't find another single reference to it. On the other hand, there were large numbers of Fulton's living just across the Delaware River from Robert and he may well be connected to some of them, though I have never seen how. There may be one subtle clue: an advertisement in the 9 Dec 1756 issue of the Pennsylvania Gazette (published in Philadelphia) from one David Fulton of Cheltenham Twp, Philadelphia Co, announces that he is missing a horse which had been brought to its present home from Bordentown, NJ after the previous harvest. Could this David be someone tied to our Robert?" *************************************************************** >From the FULTON-L archives: Subject: Abstracts from Gen Soc of PA Publications Dated: Sat, 27 Sep 1997 From: dkfulton@futura.net (dorothy k fulton) Vol V 3/1912 p 200 Abstract of Wills of Philadelphia Co David Fulton of Cheltenham Twp, Phil. 3. The following is found in Family Tree Maker CD163 Family History: Pennsylvanai Genealogies #1 Page 502 & 503 Dr. Nicholas More (1638-1687) was chairman of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly in 1682. Secretary to the Council in 1683, member and Speaker of the Assembly in 1684, and chief Judge of the Provincial Court in the same year. The name Nicholas More of London, Gentleman, appears in "An Alphabetical List of the First Purchasers Names, With their Place of Abode," as part of An explanation of the May of the City and Liberties of Philadelphia, PA 3Rd Series III. 337. He, as of the parish of St.Gregory by St. Paul, London, doctor of physic, bachelor about 32, and Mistress Mary Hedge of the parish of St.Catherine Voleman, London, spinster about 16, with consent of her father Samuel Hedge, were married 22 Dec.1670. (Register of St Dunstan in the East, London, Publications of the Harleian Society. (London 1955), 54 and Joseph Foster, ed, London Marriage License 1521-1869, (London 1887),938). This Dr. Nicholas More of London, as president of the Society of Free Traders in Pennsylvania, sailed from London in the Ship Jeoffries, probably with his family, on the 21 Sept 1682, bound for Philadelphia.("Extracts from the letter-book of James Claypoole,"PMHB<X (1886),199). Nicholas More died intestate in Philadelph! ia Co. and letters of administration were granted on his estate 23 May 1687 to his widow Mary More. (Administration Book A,28#86). This record demonstrates that Dr. More died in 1687 and not 1689, as stated in The Dictionary of American Biography. The baptisms of the children of Nicholas More and his wife Mary Hedge are not found of record in the first and third parish registers mentioned above; that of St.Catherine Coleman has not been examined here. There children are named however, in a Philadelphia deed of 12 June 1740 as: 1. Samuel More, who d. testate 6 Nov 1694 in Philadelphia; 2.Nicholas More, Jrl, who d. testate in 1729 in Penns Neck, Salem Col, N.J.: 3. Mary More, who m. Elias Keach;,4. Sarah More, who m. William Sluby who d. before 1740; 5. Rebecca More, who d. 2 Oct 1694 in Philadelphia under age and intestate (Deed Book G-6,148) Mary (Hedge) More of "Greenspring" Philadelphia Co., widow of Dr. Nicholas More, and John Holmes of Philadelphia gent, were m. 3 Jan 1687/8. (Pa. Archives, 2nd Ser VIII,vii). This was the second marriage for each. John Holmes with three servants, had arrived at Philadelphia in the Ship Desire from Plymouth, England on 23 June 1686. The said Mary (Hedge) More Holme d. intestate on 17 Nov 1694 and was bur. in Philadelphia as a person not a member of Friends. Letters of Administration on the estate of said Mary Holme "wife of John Holme of Philadelphia, Gentl, and formerly widow and administratrix of Nicholas More of said place, doctor of physic, were granted 15 Mar 1694/5 to said John Holme (Adm Book a, 209) This at least gives us the names of the children of Nicholas More, and identifies the Sarah More Sluby has his daughter. Also note how the female names carried down to the Walter More family. Ann Irwin

    3. Continuing with the Fulton and Wynkoop family connections... The Manor of Moreland Dr. Nicholas More, a London physician, and 1st Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, was the original proprietor of the Manor of Moreland. According to the Moreland Township website, Sarah (More) Sluby, was the owner of the first house built on the Manor which was allegedly constructed in 1706 (and removed for a parking lot in 1967, sigh.) Walter More's home was located on Pennypack Creek. In 1754, Rev. John Cuthbertson baptised three daughters of Walter More at this home. Based on the baptisms and the Will of Walter More (1770), I estimate that Walter More was born between 1700-1710 and may be a brother of Sarah (More) Sluby. [A man as prominent as Nicholas More must have left a Will. Can anyone sleuth this down?] The Walter More/Moore Family 1- Walter More (b bef 1714-d aft 1770) m b 1734, Martha (-?-),(d aft 1770) 2-Elizabeth More, b est 1734, m bef 1754 (Unknown) Leech 3-Walter More Leech, b bef 1770 3-Sarah Leech, b bef 1770 2-[Unknown Son] More 3-Walter More, alive 1770 2-Sarah Moore, b bef 1740, m 1756, Rev. John Cuthbertson, John Clayton and James Fulton. Which daughter married John Clayton? I see two possibilities: either daughter Elizabeth (More) Leech married John Clayton before 1770, or, there's another unidentified daughter who was NOT baptised by Rev. John Cuthbertson and who had NO children identified by Walter More in his Will signed in 1770. My guess? I suspect that daughter Elizabeth (More) Leech married (2) John Clayton. By the way, did you notice the full title and author of that source shared by Celia Snyder? "Chronicle of the Yerkes Family with Notes on the LEECH and Rutter Families" published in 1904 by Josiah Granville LEACH? Wow, what a coincidence. What about those CLAYTONs? There were two Fulton-Clayton marriages performed at Berkeley County, Virginia, by minister James Bell: 22 February 1819, Margaret Fulton married John Clayton. 4 May 1819, Elizabeth Fulton married Henry Clayton. Minister James Bell? 23 July 1795, Margaret Fulton married James Bell II at Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, VA, John Boyd, minister Minister John Boyd? 8 September 1794, Samuel Fulton married Rebecca Watson at Berkeley Co, VA, John Boyd, minister 5 December 1804, "Mrs. Rebecca Fulton" married James Spear at Berkeley Co, VA. Surety: Henry Fulton [Reference: Keesecker, Guy L., editor. "Marriage Records, Berkeley Co., VA, 1781-1854" (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1983.)] Here's more information about James and Margaret (Fulton) Bell: Back in 1986, descendant Lee M. (Beaty) Beane wrote: James Bell II, b 18 March 1770 in Scotland, was the son of James and Elinor (Nelson) Bell. Both James and Margaret (Fulton) Bell are buried in the Presbyterian Graveyard, Gerrardstown, Berkeley Co., West Virginia. [West Virginia was organized from Virginia after the War Between the States. PFS] Children: John Bell, Lancelot Bell, Zebulon Bell, Thomas Bell, James Bell III, Adam S. Bell. "Zebulon" Bell? What an interesting first name ... reminds me of "Zebulon" Warner who married Mary Fulton on 12 June 1792 at Berkeley Co, VA (minister Moses Hoge). According to the "Fulton/Hayden/Warner" genealogy ... Zebulon and Mary (Fulton) Warner named a son "Wyncoop" Warner. And you thought I was rambling. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. Continuing with the Fulton and Wynkoop family connections... [Thank you Celia Snyder for posting your informative "Yerkes/Fulton/Manor of Moreland" note (1/27/2000). It explains a lot about the Anthony Yerkes who signed his Will in 1790. To any researcher trying to pull these notes out of the Fulton Archives, be sure to search for this other message title!] Celia Snyder and I have shared information on the Fulton and Yerkes families in the past. I'd like to draw attention to the fact that we have puzzled over the "1755" marriage between Elizabeth Yerkes and David Fulton. Theoretically, it is possible that this woman is the daughter Elizabeth Fulton named in the 1790 Will of Anthony Yerkes II. However, Celia presents strong evidence that the daughter of Anthony Yerkes II was born in 1755 -- not 1735. We even considered that the "1755" marriage information was a transcription error. However, I searched and found a transcript of the original records of Christ Church of Philadelphia and discovered that the marriages are transcribed sequentially and the two Fulton marriages I have presented did occur in 1755. There is no mistake on the year. So here's my theory: there may be two separate marriages in this family between an Elizabeth Yerkes and a David Fulton! The first occured in 1755 at Christ Church in Philadelphia and the other occurred ca 1774 at an unknown location, probably Virginia. * * * * * Manor of Moreland (Thomas Holme Map, 1687) ^ Montgomery County org'd in 1784 | shares this angled northern boundary North ; | /\; Pennypack Creek crosses | / ;\ the northern portion of / ; \ the Manor of Moreland. / ; \ Pennypack appears to flow / ; \ into Dublin Creek? \; \ ;\ More- \ ; \ land \ ; \ Twp \ Byberry ; \ \ Township ; \ \ ; \ / ; \ / Lower; \ / Dublin \ / Township \ \ Poquessing Creek is to the ; \ \ east of this eastern boundary Dublin Creek \ \ of Moreland and divides flows into the \ \ Philadelphia Co. from Delaware River \/ Bucks Co. ; ~~~~~;~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Delaware River~~~~~ Philadelphia is located "down the river" to the southwest. They found a deed dated 1730 from "Richard Taylor, yeoman, of Cheltenham" to David Fulton, yeoman. [Sorry, I don't have the exact citation here at hand.] I suspect this may be the original entry for land owned by David Fulton of Lower Dublin Township. An advertisement in the "Pennsylvania Gazette" (5 July 1753) reads: “Tract of land in Lower Dublin Twp., extending N.W. by Henry Lycan’s land, N.E. by David Fulton’s land and S.E. by Benjamin Engle’s land, late belonging to Thomas Powell, dec’d, to be sold by Eleanor Powell, Joshua Jones and John Daniel., execs.” Again, on 8 January 1754, another advertisement in the "Pennsylvania Gazette": “Tract of land in Lower Dublin Twp., adjoining land of David Fulton, late estate of Thomas Powell, dec’d, taken in execution of suit of John Holme, to be sold by Sheriff Samuel Morris at Bussel-town.” Does anyone have more information on the Fulton family living in Lower Dublin Township? A Will of this David Fulton would be nice. He is certainly a good candidate for a "David Fulton Senior" mentioned in the "Wyncoop Genealogy" penned in 1878. The Powell Connection David Fulton of Lower Dublin Township owned land adjacent to Thomas Powell who died before 1753. Anyone have information on this Powell family? Did he have a son named Elisha Powell? If so, we're getting very close to connecting the David Fulton family with the Robert Fulton family of Loudon County, Virginia, and then we can connect to the adjacent Hugh Fulton family, and then ... I have to shovel snow in the walkway. Talk to you later. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. I have the following book: "Chronicle of the Yerkes Family with Notes on the Leech and Rutter Families," by Josiah Granville Leach, 1904. Elizabeth Yerkes (daughter of Anthony and Jane (?) Yerkes) is listed on page 14 along with the other children of Anthony and Jane: "Elizabeth Yerkes, married _____ FULTON; is named in her father's will, at the making of which she was living in Virginia. She may have had issue." One other Fulton is mentioned on pages 114: "Jonathan Philips Yerkes[6] (John[5], John[4], John[3], Herman[2], Anthony[1]), fourth son and seventh child of John Yerkes by his wife Elizabeth Stump, was born at Easttown, Chester County, 16 January, 1833; died there, 15 February, 1900; married, 5 February 1863, Margaret Matilda Barr, born in Radnor, Delaware County, 21 May, 1842; daughter of Charles Barr by his wife Mary Ann FULTON..." and on page 183: "John Worrell Yerkes[7] (Job Roberts[6], John[5], John[4], John[3], Herman[2], Anthony[1]), eldest child of Job Roberts Yerkes by his wife Elizabeth Pierce, was born in East Bradford, Chester County, 2 January, 1846; died there, 4 april, 1876; married, 26 February, 1873, Mary Kate Barr, born in Delaware County, 26 March, 1850; died at Chester, 25 November, 1877; daughter of Charles Barr by his wife Mary Ann Fulton." It was cast in 1849 by an A. Fulton in Pennsylvania. It is made of Nickel and Bronze and has an Angel with a harp on it. It was brought to Indiana by a friend of my grandmothers and we have had it for many years. We were told it was made by the same company that casted the Liberty Bell, though I realize that there was more than one. THe first bell cracked and they replaced it. Dont' know if our bell was or was not made by the same person. I too am researching my family geneology and find it fascinating. When I saw your site, just thought I would drop you this line. Didn't know if the bell had anything to do with your family name or not. Thanks and have a great day.

    3. Continuing with the Fulton and Wynkoop family connections... Who was the father of Margaret Fulton who married Cornelius Wynkoop in 1787? According to Richard Wynkoop's summary (family #196), Cornelius and Margaret (Fulton) Wynkoop were the parents of Catherine Wynkoop, b abt 1790, who in turn, m abt 1810, John Newell and was the mother of six children: 1. George W. Newell, b 1813 2. John Blackledge Newell, b 25 Oct 1816 3. Margaret N. Newell, b 1818 4. Sydonia N. Newell, b abt 1819 5. David F. Newell, b abt 1820, d infancy 6. Catherine Ann Newell, b abt 1824 YES! The name of child number 5, David F. Newell, is consistent with the theory that Catherine (Wynkoop) Newell was the granddaughter of David and Elisabeth (Yerkes) Fulton. * * * * * Another Fulton marriage at Christ Church, Philadelphia: A few months BEFORE the marriage of David and Elisabeth (Yerkes) Fulton, another Fulton marriage took place at the same church in Philadelphia: On 20 August 1755, Robert Fulton married Eleanor Wyncoop. (Ref: Marriages of Christ Church, p 96.) Author Richard Wynkoop speculated that "Eleanor" was actually "Nelle or Nelly" Wynkoop, daughter of Cornelius and Helena (Van de Grift) Wynkoop, [Family #44]. Further, he suggests that Eleanor/Nelle/Nelly's younger sister, Helena, b 26 Oct 1743, d 15 Nov 1762 [sic], married David Fulton "Senior" at the Abington Presbyterian Church. [Now my transcript of the Abington Church Marriages includes a marriage between a David Fulton and a Helen Wynkoop on 30 March 1762. Was this marriage performed in 1761 or 1762? Where does the reference to a David Fulton "Senior" come from?] * * * * * According to author Richard Wynkoop, the Wynkoop family was originally settled near Kingston, New York. Grandson Cornelius Wynkoop (Gerret5, Cornelius1), was born 1700 at Kingston, NY, ... "removed about the year 1717 with his father's family to Moreland, Montgomery Co [sic -- not organized until 1784, therefore Philadelphia County] PA and perhaps thence to Bucks County in 1727." Who were Robert and David Fulton who married at the Christ Church in Philadelphia in 1755? Who was David Fulton who married Helen Wynkoop in 1761/62 at the Abington Presbyterian Church? Other Fulton marriages at the Abington Presbyterian Church: 1762 (or 1761?), March 30: David Fulton to Helen Wyncoop [sic] 1768, September 8: James Fulton m Sarah Van Court/Vancourt 1787, January 25: Margaret Fulton m Cornelius Wynkoop 1793, October 3: Josepeh Fulton m Anne Crawford [Oooooh, there's another Crawford connection!] Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. Continuing with the Fulton and Wynkoop family connections... Is it possible that Anthony Yerkas of the Manor of Moreland was the father of Elisabeth Yerkes who married David Fulton in 1755 at the Christ Church in Philadelphia? If we assume that Elisabeth was at least 16 when she married in 1755, then we know she was born in 1739 or earlier. If we assume that her father was at least 20 when she was born in 1739, we know that he was born in 1719 or earlier. If Anthony Yerkas was born 1719 (or earlier), then he was 71 years old (or older) when he signed his Will in 1790. That certainly sounds possible to me. (This is not a proof; it is just a viable theory.) Now this is where it really gets interesting. The Yerkas/Yerkes family owned land at the Manor of Moreland that was adjacent to Walter Moore. On 3 September 1770, "Walter Moore of Manor of Mooreland, gentleman" signed his will (Ref: Philadelphia County Will Book P, p 209). John Crawford of Warrington and Samuel Erwin of Moreland were the executors and Silas Yerkes, Stephen Yerkes and William Patterson were witnesses. Another Crawford Connection [Oooooh, Crawfords again. What does this mean? Recall that a William Fulton married Martha Crawford at Ulster County, NY, before moving to Ontario County, NY -- if you don't know what I'm talking about, you haven't been doing your homework. Refer back to the 14-part saga of the "Fultons of Ontario County, NY" uploaded to the Fulton List earlier this month.] Walter Moore of the Manor of Mooreland Who was Walter Moore? Walter Moore was the father-in-law of merchant James Fullton of Philadelphia. How is Walter Moore connected to the Manor of Mooreland? I don't know. But I do know that the Manor of Mooreland appears on the first map of Philadelphia published in 1689! I suspect that the Manor of Mooreland was granted before William Penn received his grant. Walter is clearly too young to be the original proprietor, but may be a close relative. (Sounds like another research project to me!) On 28 February 1760, merchant James Fullton married Mary Moore, daughter of Walter Moore. The marriage was performed at the Manor of Mooreland by Rev. John Cuthbertson and is noted in his personal diary. Rev. John Cuthbertson, a minister of the "Reformed Presbyterian Church" came to America in 1751 and maintained a detailed diary of his activities. [This diary was transcribed by S. Helen Fields and published as the "Register of Marriages and Baptisms by Rev. John Cuthbertson (Washington, D.C. Daughters of American Revolution, 1934)]. Four years before merchant James Fullton married a daughter of Walter Moore, the good Reverend married Sarah "Sally" Moore, another daughter of Walter Moor [sic], marriage performed 25 February 1756. Therefore, Rev. Cuthbertson and merchant James Fullton were brothers-in-law. An additional note from the diary, dated 20 January 1754, shows that Rev. John Cuthbertson "...baptized Sarah, Elizabeth Leech and Mary, daughters to Walter Moor [sic] ... at Walter Moore's." [Ref: Fields, op cit, p 202.] Merchant James Fullton maintained Walter Moore during the last few years of his life and there is a detailed accounting of expenses for Walter Moore in the surviving business ledgers of James Fullton (as evaluated by Herbert Leister of Lancaster County.) The Will of Walter Moore (1770) names his wife, Martha Moore, daughter Mary [Moore] Fulton, grand-daughter Sarah Fulton, grandchildren Sarah Cuthbertson and John Cuthbertson, grandchildren Walter Moore Leech and Sarah Leech, grandson Walter Moore, sons-in-law Rev. John Cuthbertson, John Clayton and James Fulton, and cousin John Moore. But I digress. Let's return to the Wyncoop connections. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. Here we go again. Yes, Roberta, there is an interesting string of Fulton and Wynkoop (Wyncoop) relationships. What does it mean for our Fulton family? Again, I can't say right now, but after we pool our thoughts and mull this over, I suspect we will arrive at some exciting conclusions. First of all, thank you, Celia Snyder, for posting the Wynkoop website URL [http://members.tripod.com/~wynkoop/index.htm]. Webmaster Christopher Wynkoop has pooled a large collection of Wynkoop genealogy into a very useful research portal. The Wynkoop genealogy, as posted by Celia, was taken from the 3rd edition (1904) of Richard Wynkoop's research. Richard Wynkoop started collecting information in 1848 and published a "Preliminary Genealogy" in 1866 (which does NOT include any mention of the Fulton family). The 2nd Edition, published in 1878, included the Fulton/Wynkoop marriages found in the records of the Abington Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia County (present Montgomery County) Pennsylvania. The 3rd Edition, 1904, (excerpts uploaded to our Fulton site by Celia), includes additional Fulton information that appears to come from Hugh Ramsey Fulton's "The Fulton Family" published in 1900. H. R. Fulton believed, but could NOT prove, that he was directly related to inventor Robert Fulton. However, he included a chapter in his book devoted entirely to previously published information about the inventor. This chapter includes the "Kilkenny, Ireland" statement which was first penned by Cadwallader Colden in 1817. As I read the three editions of Richard Wynkoops' "Wynkoop Genealogy", I was intrigued about the Wynkoop migration pattern from Kingston, New York, to the Manor of Moreland, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, circa 1717. I have been studying the Fultons living on or near the Manor of Moreland for a number of years and the careful research of Richard Wynkoop answers a few long standing questions. For example, according to the records of the Abington Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia County (present Montgomery County), Pennsylvania, Margaret Fulton married Cornelius Wyncoop on 25 January 1787. This marriage is found in the Richard Wynkoop genealogy in the 2nd and 3rd editions (See Family #196). Author Richard Wynkoop did not know the ancestry of Margaret Fulton but noted, "mother's maiden name Yerkes". Thank you, Richard! That's all I needed! What do we know about this Margaret Fulton? Well, she married in 1787, so she was probably at least 16 years old, therefore born before 1771. Her father was a FULTON and her mother was reportedly a YERKES. This information matches the marriage of David FULTON and Elisabeth YERKES recorded 15 October 1755 at Christ Church, Philadelphia. (Ref: Marriages of Christ Church, Philadelphia, p 96; also found in "Pennsylvania Vital Records", Vol 1, p 541, erroneously transcribed as Elizabeth "Yeates".) If the groom, Cornelius Wyncoop, was born 18 June 1762, he was 25 at the time he married in 1787. His wife, was probably born between 1762 and 1771 -- which is consistent with the David Fulton/Elisabeth Yerkes marriage in 1755. In 1790, Anthony Yerkas [sic] of the Manor of Moreland signed his Will and provided for his daughter "Elizabeth Fulton of Virginia." Witnesses to this will included James Fulton, Samuel Ayres, and Philip Wynkoop. (Thank you, Celia Snyder for sharing the Will of Anthony Yerkas with me!) Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

I am assuming the Red River you mentioned is a county. When I checked the Geographic Names Information System at URL: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Red River is listed not only as a county, but also as other features (cemetery, stream) in different counties. Lamar Co TX is just west of Red River Co TX. I checked the Ancestry's Redbook and Everton's Handybook for Genealogists that states that Lamar Co. was formed in 1840/41 from Red River Co. The Red River Co, TX was an original county formed in 1836. Since these areas are so close, perhaps the William Fulton in Lamar Co in 1846 is related to your William Fulton in Red River Co. When checking the Fulton-L archives for Dinwiddie, it appears that this is one of the surnames that co-exists with Fultons in other geographic areas. One note posted 12 Oct 1997 mentioned the will of a Mary Polly Dinwiddie's father that was probated in Bath Co, VA, where there is lots of Fulton activity in adjoining counties of Rockbridge and Augusta, VA. (For information on those VA Fultons, please see Norma Jennings web site on Fulton Manuscripts at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jennings/manuscript/fultindx.htm - scroll to the bottom for the VA groups). The note further states that Mary Dinwiddie migrated to Jessamine, Shelby Co, KY. Shelby Co, KY is another Fulton area. I am NOT suggesting that this has anything to do with your relatives, but rather knowing the general migration patterns can be of help. Your best bet is to focus on where you know your relatives are from - the Red River TX area (verify you have the correct Red River area) and "dragnet" for all appropriate records. On a side note, the Bath Co, VA area is relevant to Robert Fulton of steamboat fame. In the book, Robert Fulton A Biography by Cynthia Owen Philip, 1985, NY on pages 11-13 states: "Early in 1786, Fulton was taken ill with blood-spitting inflammation of the lungs, probably tuberculosis, a common Philadelphia scourge. Contemporary cures for consumption included blisters, purges, prunes, salt in large doses, laudanum, clear mountain air, and exercise. Poor Richard's Almanack advocated a concoction of red roses and niter to be taken by the teaspoonful four to eight times a day depending on the urgency of the case. Fulton chose to visit the Warm Springs at Bath, Virginia. "Ye Famed Warm Springs," as George Washington called it when he visited as a young surveyor in 1748, had developed into a rustic but fashionable resort. In addition to a high elevation, from which the upper Potomac could be viewed, and its healthful waters-hot enough to boil an egg- it offered dancing, gambling, theatricals, horse racing, and a chance to rub shoulders with such luminaries as the Fairfaxes, the Carters, and the Washingtons. Among the local residents of Bath was an innkeeper and carpenter named James Rumsey. After having entrusted him with the building of his house at the spa, Washington was so impressed with his abilities that he sponsored his appointment as the chief engineer of the canal that was to bypass the Great Falls of the Potomac River. At the same time, Rumsey was secretly working on a boat that would be capable of ascending a river using the current as a propelling force. A catamaran, it had a paddle wheel in the center that activated long poles by means of which the boat "walked" up stream. Rumsey had demonstrated his invention privately for Washington in September 1784, and Washington was convinced the machinery was so easy to build, it would be a great boon to inland navigation. In 1785 or 1786, Rumsey began thinking about applying steam as a means of propulsion; the exact year was later a matter of fierce debate between him and Fitch. However, he had made virtually no progress, for he was preoccupied with the recalcitrant engineering problems presented by the Potomac canal. Because of Rumsey's penchant for secrecy, it is highly unlikely that Fulton heard about his work with steam at the time, even as gossip. Fulton returned to Philadelphia in splendid health and moved his shop to a more peripheral location, Front Street above Pine. He was not to reside there long, however, for within a few months he was making plans to study painting in London. He had acquired a letter of introduction, said to be from Benjamin Franklin to Benjamin West who, as the official history painter for George III, was one of the leaders of the London art world. Generous with his talent and his time, West had long served as the mentor of aspiring American artists who sought the instruction abroad that they could not find at home. In addition to the letter, Fulton had a purse of forty guineas, enough, he optimistically thought to last him at least a year. In May 1786 Fulton bought his mother a small manageable farm in Hopewell Township, Pennsylvania. Her older brother, the Reverend Joseph Smith, had moved there the previous year as a minister to the Presbyterian congregation, and the land was part of the property on which he settled. In September, Fulton also acquired three building lots as an investment in Washington, Pennsylvania, not far from his mother's farm. Where Fulton found the eight pounds for the down payment on the farm and the five pounds on the lots as well as forty guineas for his trip to England is puzzling. Philadelphia was suffering from the extended financial crisis that gripped the country as a postlude to the Revolutionary War. Bartering was prevalent, and it was exceedingly difficult for anyone, let alone a young artist, to accumulate hard money. The most realistic explanation for Fulton's prosperity is that he found a patron, perhaps one of the rich frequenters of Bath. Joseph Delapine, in his early nineteenth-century work on distinguished Americans, points to one Samuel Scorbitt. This may have been a misreading of Samuel Turbitt, Fulton's boyhood companion who, from later correspondence, seems an unlikely candidate. Always proud to announce that from the beginning he had made his own way, Fulton never spoke of an American patron, even to his closest friends." Roberta R. Montgomery county was created in 1784 from several counties inlcuding, Chester Co. And it looks as though Norristown (the city) would have been in Chester Co in 1753. But as I said, I can find a city by the name Norristown, but not a township, although back in 1753 perhaps it was a township. Please help to clarify. What was the source of your information ? Also how did you link the John Fulton 1753 in Norristown, PA to the Centre Co, PA area later ? It may be significant in the recent discussion on the list about the David Fulton 1756 of Cheltenham Township, (former Philadelphia Co, current Montgomery Co, PA. Norristown a city. Norristown and Cheltenham township are only about 12 miles apart. If you look at a current map for Abington (a city, township and an important church in those day), Cheltenham is about 6 miles miles south of Abington, Upper Moreland township and Lower Moreland township encompass an area less than 6 miles Northeast of Abington, and Norristown(city) is about 12 miles WNW of Abington. As you can see, the Abington area is sort of centrally located in reation to these areas. I am assuming you have already searched the FULTON-L archives for the McMullen connection (one note I have enclosed below). Also of interest were some abstracts from Ann Irwin posted 22 March 1998 from the Pa. Archives 5th series Vol 7 page 97 Undesignated Militia that lists members of the Bedford Co Militia in 1782 including Capt. John Fulton Capt. Thomas Davies (anyone know if his surname has significance to the origin of the county name Jo Daviess Co, IL - the area where Peter McMullen Fulton is born in 1869.) Private Michael McMullen, Private Peter McMullen Lt. William Beatty (another surname we see with Fultons in many areas) Notice by studying geographic areas and the community of people in those areas, some interesting leads may develop.
