    3. Hi: Here is my connection to FULTON Robert FULTON Stottlemyer b. June 1831 son of Davault Stottlemyer and Lavinia West. He was born in Md and on Jan.19, 1858, he married Amelia Catherine WOLVERTON. They had children: John D. Stottlemyer b. 1859 who I believe married a daughter of a military man by the name of Pelton. That is off the top of my head. The 2nd child in that family was my GGrandmother, Lavina Virginia Stottlemyer b. 15 June 1868 and she married on 3 July 1888 Amos Bender Wilkinson. These families all lived most of their lives in the Hancock Md.; McConnellsburg, Fulton Co. Pa.area. My Doyle Line was through Michael Doyle and wife Rachel ann Gosnell. They had a son Michael Francis Doyle who married Elizabeth Jane Rumel. Their son, Ross Elsworth Doyle was my Grandpa. He m. Amanda Valetta Wilkinson and they had four children, Amos Francis, John Andrew(my dad) Anna Catherine and Rose Virginia. My first Michael according to 1850 census was born in Ireland. Another census said he was born in Mass. The Alexander name comes in with a daughter of Michael Francis Doyle. She was Emma Rebecca b. 1875 d. 1957 Fulton co. Pa. She married Scott Alexander in Fulton Co. Pa. Hope this is understandable to everyone. Rosie

    3. I recently found a great web site that I want to share with you, but first a little background. This is a Books on line at the University of Pennsylvania. (Over 43 pages of titles) The one I found interesting and some of you will also is ; "A narrative of the captivity and sufferings of Benjamin Gilbert and his family: who were surprised by the Indians and taken from their farm on the frontiers of Pennsylvania in the spring, 1780" Published by Joseph Crukshank in 1784 in Philadelphia. Some of you are familiar with the John Fulton Family who where captured in Northumberland Co. Pa. on July 3, 1778, taken to Canada, held for 2 years, and released. The interesting comparison is that the Gilbert family were captured by Indians by the name of Montour(Same as Fultons) taken to Niagara, then to Montreal and held for approximately 2 yrs. the similarity of the two stories are very intriguing. Now for the web site address: http://www-cgi.cs.cmu.edu/cgi-bin/book/subjectstart?E-F Ann Irwin

Fulton King <ekfulton@webtv.net> had stated she got the information on David A. Fulton 1827-1897 from a tombstone in a cemetery in Apollo, Armstrong Co, PA, which is by the border of Westmoreland Co, PA. Bethany Fulton Rainey <Grrchick@aol.com> mentioned that most of her ancestors were from western Pennsylvania. Her father Doyle Leroy Fulton who was born 1927 at home in Blacks Hollow PA which is near Apollo, PA. Notice they also listed John Alexander Fulton 1896-1976. We do not know if the Alexander represents a surname, which is one you listed for your line. Betty Jane (Fulton) Garcia <rrbjgarcia@webtv.net> in an archived note dated 06 Jul 1999 had mentioned that there was a Wayne Jackson Fulton 1895-1960 and the name JACKSON appears in the widow Agnes Fulton family. She also mentions that in the census of 1880 it says that David A. Fultons's father was born in Ireland. This might rule out a direct connection to the widow Agnes or the Abraham Fulton/Margaret Guthrie lines because I believe their Irish-born members most likely would have been too early to be a father to a David A. Fulton b 1827. Since we do not have all the facts, the best approach is to keep an open mind and to continue to evaluate and analyze the data as it is discovered. Perhaps some of the researchers who are studying these lines can share their thoughts on this topic. A note in the archives on Subject: Richard FULTON resided near Newville, now Cumberland Co,PA ca 1738 Dated 12 Mar 1999 discusses a migration of neighbors near the birthplace of Robert Fulton of steamboat fame to Chambersburg, Franklin Co, Pa, which appears to be about 15-20 miles east from McConnellsburg, Fulton Co, PA. You may be interested in that information for general background data. As you can see, having some detailed maps is important, since geographic boundaries often "blind" us to the fact that towns in different counties can be very close in distance to each other when located near the borders of those county boundaries. Please tell us a little more about your Fulton connections. Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York Fulton web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm

    3. The Fulton archives has a message from me that points out why I believe John Fulton of Chester Co PA, died 1794, is the son of James Fulton who died in York Co PA in 1772. A summary is: Per Hugh Fulton John born 1713 John was a Fuller John married Eleanore >From James Fulton's Bible which he brought from Scotland and was printed in 1599, there are two births 1714 and 1716. Unfortunately the first names had been completely obliterated by the time W Earl Fulton took the Bible to the York Co PA Historical Society in 1947 where several pages were copied by whatever method there was then. >From James' will we know he had children named John and Janet (Jennet), James, William, Andrew, Hugh and David.. >From the Old Parochial Register, Kilmarnock JOHN FULTON, Dyster in Kilmars from whence he produced a sufficient Testemonial & Helen Ritchmont daughter to umgll (decd) Andrew Ritchmont in this parish both their 1st marriages were booked on friday Jany 10, 1744 after orderly proclamation those Several Sabbath Days were married at Kilmars Jan 1744. William Steven son to Thomas Steven in Crookedholme & JANET FULTON daughter to James Fulton in Mains of Rowallan both their 1st marriages were booked on Thursday 9 Jul 1733. >From the Parochial Records James Fulton (will probated 1772) is known to have moved between Fardall/Fardale Hill just west of Kilmarnock and Rowallan. Rowallan is the local castle and just a short distance from the town of Kilmaurs. Fardale Hill was in the parish of Kilmaurs. Today the city limits of Kilmarnock are about 500 yards from the buildings of Fardale Hill where James lived part of the time. There are three children of Janet's in the parish records, the last in 1737, and six for James. There were no records for John in Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs, or Fenwick. It is possible that after 1737, the Fulton family became members of the Antiburghers. For more detail please check the archives. Irene Fulton

    3. Dear Bill, I believe we are talking about different bell foundries in Pittsburgh, PA. In the enclosed note, Andrew Fulton founded a Bell Foundry in the early 1800s. Barbara Schmidt's note mentions the building is Civil War era and still standing. She called it the A. J. Mamaux Building for a former owner who made canvas products and stated that in researching this building she found that the MAGEE family, Fulton Bell Foundry, and City of Pittsburgh Engine Companies 18 & 19 and possiblty Engine Co. 1 had occupied this site. She lists the current address of the building is 121-123 First Avenue and 120-122 Boulevard of the Allies, Pittsburgh, PA with Chancery Way, an alley on one side. The building is one building now but spans two city lots thus fronting on two streets. You mention your "Fulton" buildings were torn down in the 50's when the "Triangle" or Point was modernized and then the corporation (Chaplin Fulton Manufacturing Co.) moved to Neville Island at that time and that building is still standing. I am not familar with Pittsburgh. Are these locations near to each other ? Do you know what FULTON line the owners of the corporation Chaplin Fulton Manufacturing Co. came from ? Perhaps it was a later generation of Andrew Fulton m Jane McGee of 1832 bell foundry line. He has a son Andrew McGee Fulton who married Marie Smith. You mentioned that your Andrew Fulton was the founder of the Bell Foundry that was incorporated in 1891, so we definitely are referring to different time periods. ROOTSWEB has now provided on menu-driven interface to search the archives of the discussion lists. It can be reached at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl It is a very powerful search engine, is easy to use, and can be used to search ANY of the discussion lists at ROOTSWEB by specifying the list of interest. In any case, to search our Fulton list, here are the directions: 1) Go to URL: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl 2) On first panel in the mailing list box type fulton-l and hit the Select Query button. 3) On the next panel in the Query box specify a keyword, such as foundry. Select a database year such as 1998. Hit the search button. 4) On the next panel you will see a list of notes that contain the keyword you specified. The Subject may give you an idea of the contents of the note (a reason why it is so important to make the subject very specific and not generic). Click on FULL to see the contents of the note. Use your browser's EDIT FIND feature to quickly locate the keyword. After you try searching several times, you will see that it is a very useful search engine. By the way, suppose you had to unsubscribe from a list for vacation, and you wanted to see what queries you missed in Dec 1998. Specify the keyword "Dec 1998" with the quotes and only one space between the Dec and the year. It will show you all the notes sent to the list for that month. For high volume lists such as the Familysearch or the Ship passenger lists that can get dozens of messages on a daily basis, specify just one day, such as "3 Feb 2000" and this will show you just the notes sent on that day. ROOTSWEB sponsors not only surname lists but interest lists and geographic lists as well. The mailing lists sponsored by ROOTSWEB are listed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ Although by nature we tend to focus on surname mailing lists, do not forget the locality lists - they can be even more important. For example, you will see there is a PAALLEGH-L list that covers Pittsburgh which is in Allegheny County. I decided to take a quick look. One entry from 13 Jun 1998 from a SuessRN@aol.com states that in the course of restoring her old house she found marriage certificates, family Bible and more from 1800-on and would like to pass these on to these families. Names include Andrew M. BLAIR m. Anna H. FULTON on 11/02/1893, FULTON family bible, Frances FORTUNE, also BRICKLEY. Now isn't that a golden treasure for the right family !!! Have fun reading. Although I am not related to that branch of the Fultons, I am enclosing some information that may be of assistance to your research. Andrew FULTON married Jane MAGEE. He established the bell and brass foundry business in Pittsburg in 1832 and is descended from the John FULTON who was born in Scotland ca. 1713, emigrated to America ca. 1753, and settled in Nottingham Township, Chester Co, PA ca 1762. This data was taken from page 29 of the book entitled the "Genealogy of the Fulton Family" by Hugh R. Fulton, 1900. Details regarding the book are enclosed below. I am interested in how you are related to this group of Fultons. Could you please tell me how you descend from this line and any migration patterns of the Fultons that you are aware of. You may be interested in joining our Fulton discussion group that has about 148 Fulton researchers. I will send you directions about the list in a separate note. Tradition has it that the little family landed at New Castle, Delaware, or Balitmore, for James wrote that he had lived in Maryland for seven years, where his son John was born in 1755. Then in 1762 he moved to Chester County, PA., where he had resided ever since. In 1772 he purchased a tract of 260 acres of land from John Hawthorn for five and fifty pounds, or about $275.00. This land lay on the Big Elk Creek and the Oxford and New London Road, and included what are now the properties of Job Pugh, Peter Caldwell, or the old Charles McDonald farm, and the Henry Way place.” On page 3 it mentions that John’s will was dated February 6 1796, and proven at West Chester, March 24, 1796. On page 6 it indicates that the will mentions John’s daughter “Jane Wilson, wife of Matthew Wilson, of East Nottingham." On page 23-26 a copy of the will is printed. At the end of the book, the author includes several letters written in the late 1800’s to members of other Fulton branches not related to his line, such as a Canadian branch of Fultons; the Centre Co, PA Fultons; the Midway settlement near Dorchester, Liberty Co, GA. Fultons; the Nova Scotia Fultons; the Abraham Fulton and Margaret Guthry from Articlave, Londonderry Co, Ireland and Westmoreland Co.PA Fultons; and the Nebraska Fultons. Obviously the author, Hugh Ramsey Fulton, enjoyed his genealogical research and corresponded widely with Fultons in the late 1800s - and he published his findings.

    3. Dear Roberta, With my convoluted ancestry, it is easy to become confused. Let me clarify. First, as far as I know, we're talking about the same Andrew and he was the only Andrew Fulton to have a bell foundry in Pittsburgh. He was my Father's Great Grandfather and did, in fact marry Jane Magee in 1824. He had a number of children among whom was Andrew Magee Fulton, whose line I haven't traced. Andrew senior of whom I have a photograph) founded the bell foundry in 1832 on old second street in Pittsburgh. Now the plot thickens. In 1885, my Mother's Grandfather, Louis Brown Fulton, Melchior B. Chaplin and William M. Ralston formed a partnership (Chaplin - Fulton, Ltd.) to take over the business. Louis was a nephew of Andrew as he was the son of Andrews brother, James who was born around 1800 and married Eliza Jane Morrow in 1830. Why none of Andrew's children apparently didn't continue in the business is unknown to me. Even thicker - Louis's brother, Thomas Cooper Fulton (my Father's Grandfather, White Bear Lake Minn.) married one of Andrew Senior's daughters (a cousin obviously) Margaret Magee Fulton. In 1891, the business was incorporated as Chaplin-Fulton Manufacturing Company and was operating at 28 to 34 Penn Avenue and later expanded to include 38 to 40 on the same street. These are the buildings that were demolished in the early fifties. At that time (1950), Chaplin-Fulton moved to Neville Island which is probably 5 to 10 miles down (west) the Ohio River. By this time, we had moved to Phoenix and my Father was no longer involved with the business. I hope this adds some clarification, but I think I'll try Barbara in addition. There are never too many sources when trying to pinpoint something like this. Thanks for the "instructions" on the archives. I'll give it try and let you know how it goes. Thanks again, Bill "Roberta (Fulton) Hirth" wrote: > > Dear Bill, > I believe we are talking about different bell foundries in > Pittsburgh, PA. > > In the enclosed note, Andrew Fulton founded a Bell Foundry in the > early 1800s. Dear Teresa, ROOTSWEB, the sponsor of our discussion list, is providing free space to store copies of wills, biographies, deeds, etc. and free web space. So this gives us Fulton researchers a centralized area for publicly storing material, including photos, of all branches of the Fulton family that we discuss on the list. Thank you for offering to provide a photo of the bell. Please let me know what I should send you for reimbursement. My mailing address is: Roberta Hirth P.O. Box 384 Harriman, New York 10926 Although this is not my line of Fultons, I have taken a great interest in studying other branches. The Hugh Ramsey Fulton who wrote the book about his branch that includes Andrew FULTON, the founder of the bell foundry, had felt that his Fultons were collateraly related to the Robert Fulton of steamboat fame, but he had never been able to prove it. His immigrant ancestor John Fulton settled in Oxford, Nottingham Township (current East Nottingham Township), Chester Co., PA., which is located only about ten miles east of the location of the birthplace of Robert Fulton of steamboat fame in a locale now called the Fulton House. The Fulton House is situated about 6 miles south of Quarryville, PA in Fulton Township (former Little Britain Township), Lancaster Co, PA. You can use the U.S. Geographic Names Information System at http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html and specify Fulton House as the feature and Pennsylvania as the state. Hit the Send Query button. Click on "Show feature details and location" on the next screen and then click "Show feature location" on the next screen. The information given shows the exact latitude and longitude along with a map of the surrounding area. By the way, the gal who was doing historical research in Sept 1998 on the building that contained the foundry is Barbara Schmitt <sch@nauticom.net> I will :cc her on this note to make her aware of your interest and :cc the discussion group to make them aware of your kind offer regarding the photo. 3. Continuing with the Fulton & Wynkoop family connections... When Robert Fulton Sr. of Loudoun County, Virginia, signed his Will in January 1792, Aaron Sanders was one of the witnesses. In 1823, George Cox of Loudoun County was jailed for debt. He pledged his wife's share in the land of Hugh Fulton as security to get out of jail. The Fulton land was described as adjacent to Aaron Sanders. "Wait -- you never told us about HUGH Fulton!" Like Agatha Christie, I've still got a few clues in my pocket. Hugh Fulton of Loudoun County first appears on the tax records as early as 1765, almost 10 years before Robert Fulton Sr. appears. Here's my source: * * * * * Hopkins, Margaret L. "Index to The Tithables of Loudoun County, Virginia," (Photocopy, unknown publication information), page 28. 1765 Hugh Fulton, Loudoun County 1768 Hugh Fulton, Loudoun County 1771 Hugh Fulton, Shelburne Parish -> John Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1772 Hugh Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1773 Hugh Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1775 David, Hugh, & Robert Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1776 David & Robert Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1777 David & Robert Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1778 David & Robert Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1779 Hugh, Robert, & Robert Fulton Jr, Shelburne Parish 1782 Hugh, Robert, & David, Shelburne Parish 1783 Robert, Robert Jr., & David Fulton, Shelburne Parish 1784 William Fulton, Cameron Parish 1785 William Fulton, Cameron Parish * * * * * -> Note that a John Fulton paid taxes in 1771 and then disappears from the record. In 1776, a John Fulton signed a "Dissenter Petition" at nearby Berkeley County, VA. [Ref: Tyler’s Historical and Genealogical Quarterly, (Unknown publication information), Volume 18, page 261.] Hugh Fulton of Loudoun County, Virginia What about good ol' Hugh Fulton? He died intestate in 1803. His widow, Susannah, was appointed Administrator of his estate. The Hugh Fulton land (140 acres) was located on the south side of Catoktin Mountain adjacent to Aaron Sanders. Research of Janelle Bennett of Washington State. I have to give special credit to a truly dilligent genealogist, Janelle Bennett. She contacted me about 10 years ago with some exciting information gleaned from the Loudoun County courthouse in Virginia. (Unable to obtain any assistance from the Loudoun County staff, Janelle drove across the country to take a look for herself! She was researching the COX family and, in the process, unearthed a treasure of documents regarding the Hugh Fulton family. You and I would never have found this information -- it is filed under the surname COX! Explanation George Cox married Rebecca Fulton, a daughter of Hugh Fulton. George Cox had many creditors and was thrown in jail. Cox pledged his wife's claim to the "land of Hugh Fulton bounded by Aaron Sanders" in order to get out of jail! Subsequent documents identify 10 heirs of Hugh Fulton! This find was especially exciting for me because I recognized at least two of the heirs -- one famiily living in Georgia and the other living in Indiana! In short, Hugh Fulton fathered 10 children. The first four were born before 1780 by an unknown wife or wives. From the court records: Hugh Fulton, d 1803 1. David Fulton of Switzerland County, Indiana 2. Martha Fulton m Joseph Thomas 3. Catherine Fulton m John Cane 4. Mary "Polly" Fulton m Nathan Wright The last six were children of Hugh and Susannah (Lybough) Fulton: 5. Elizabeth Fulton m Dorsey Jacobs 6. Rachel Fulton m1 Ambrose Maddison, m2 Enoch Kellor 7. Rebecca Fulton m George Cox 8. James Fulton m Sarah Stoneburner 9. William Fulton, unm in 1829 10. Margaret Fulton, unm in 1829 The court records specified that heir David Fulton was a resident of "Switzerland County, Indiana." This was great information for the descendants of this David Fulton -- proving Hugh Fulton of Virginia was their ancestor! I was more excited about the reference to heir "Polly, wife of Nathan Wright". I found their marriage in my massive Fulton collection, they were married 17 February 1792 in South Carolina and David Fulton was the bondsman. I always figured David was her father -- but no, it was her older brother! I excitedly shared all of this information with webmaster of the Wright family webpage several years ago and I keep stumbling over these Wright descendants in Alabama and surrounds. I'm sure it will mean something for another of our research projects. By the way, Mary "Polly" (Fulton) Wright named her first child, David Fulton Wright. Isn't that interesting? David Fulton and his sister Mary "Polly" Fulton were in South Carolina in 1792? Wanderlust? or did they have a disagreement with the step-mother? or did the whole family move south for a spell? I note that Hugh Fulton doesn't appear on the Tax Roll after 1782. Was he tax exempt? The Baptist Connection As a final thought today, I was intrigued by Celia Snyder's information on the Yerkes family of the Manor of Moreland. Especially the connections to the Baptist Church. Most Fultons in America were affiliated with the Presbyterian Church but I have found a few Baptist connections. On 9 December 1764, Hugh Fulton married Rachel Thomas at the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, Pa. Could this be Hugh Fulton of Loudoun County? He named a daughter Rachel and daughter, Martha "Patsy" Fulton, married a Joseph Thomas. Which may connect to yet another Fulton family intermarried with three members of the Thomas family! Yes, Roberta, this is a very interesting thread we are pulling! Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. Continuing with the Fulton and Wynkoop family connections... About six years ago, a woman came to my home in Niwot, Colorado, and identified herself as the mother of one of my Fulton correspondents. She was here in Colorado and asked if she could tape-record my thoughts on her Fulton family. So, this dear woman and I sat in my unfinished basement for hours as I pulled records out of my "Fulton Archives." She wanted to know more about Elisha Wynkoop Fulton. Small world, isn't it? Elisha Wyncoop Fulton was born 6 Oct 1793 at Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia. He was the oldest of five children born to Robert and Sarah (Powell) Fulton. This couple married at Loudoun Co, VA, 11 Sep 1792. Sarah was the daughter of Elisha Powell. >From her research, she told me that these were the children of Robert and Sarah (Powell) Fulton: 1-Elisha Wynkoop Fulton, b 1793, d 20 Oct 1866 at Bainbridge, Indiana 2-Robert Massie Fulton 3-David Powell Fulton, b 1797, m 1821, Jane E. Carr 4-John Fulton 5-William Fulton Checking the surviving tax records of Loudoun County, Virginia, I found that a Robert Fulton first paid taxes at Shelburne Parish beginning in 1775. Shelburne Parish, organized in 1770, was created from the western part of Cameron Parish and included the land west of Goose Creek running to the Blue Ridge. Shelburne Parish is bounded by Berkeley County, VA, on the west. Robert Fulton Sr. of Loudoun County, Virginia, signed his Will on 2 January 1792 and it was proved on 10 October 1798. [Ref: Loudoun County Will Book F (1797-1802), page 55. Photocopy of recorded instrument from LDS Film 0032276, “Book F, page 54.”] “…all my Estate to my son Robert … provided that he shall keep my loving wife in all things necessary during her life … my son Robert shall pay my son David ten shillings at my wife’s Death … unto my Daughter Leanah one Cow over & above what I have lent her … unto my Daughter Molly/Melly? [no dot over the second letter] twenty five pounds … unto my son James fifty pounds and in case my son James and Daughter Molly/Melly should die without lawful issue, then in That case it shall fall to my Son Robert and in case my son Robert should die without lawful Issue and my Son James & Daughter Melly should survive They shall fall Heir to my said son Robert’s part, my son James Drawing two shares my son Robert is to pay all my Lawful Debts and have my Estate appraised after my Death … my sons Robert, and James to be my Executors … seal this Second day of January one thousand Seven hundred and ninety two.” Robert Fulton (Seal), Teste: John Binns and Aaron Sanders. Will proved 10 October 1798 by witnesses. Robert and James Fulton, executors, with James McKinney, Aaron Sanders and William Middleton their Securities. Robert Fulton Sr. of Loudoun County, Virginia wife alive in 1792 (not named in Will) son Robert Fulton Jr. (to care for widow) son David Fulton son James Fulton dau Leanah Fulton dau Molly/Melly Fulton (if "Molly" then her birthname might be Mary) Is Elisha Wyncoop Fulton, b 1793, the grandson of Robert Fulton who signed his Will in January 1972 (and died abt 1798)? It's possible. Note the statement, "...in case my son Robert should die without issue" which implies that there is not a known heir in Jan 1792. Robert Fulton, father of Elisha Wyncoop Fulton, married in September 1792, and the oldest child, Elisha, was born the following year, 1793. Perhaps the father of Elisha is Robert Fulton Jr? The unusual name "Wyncoop" suggests that Robert Fulton Sr. of Loudoun County, VA, who first appears on the tax record in 1775, may be the same Robert Fulton who married Eleanor Wyncoop on 20 August 1755 at the Christ Church in Philadelphia. If, as suggested here, Robert Fulton who married Sarah Powell in 1792 is the son of this couple, then we're building a case for a connection to David Fulton of Lower Dublin Twp who owned land next to Thomas Powell, deceased, in 1753. David Fulton of Lower Dublin Twp, Pennsylvania (alive in 1753) with land adjacent to Thomas Powell, deceased 1. Robert Fulton, m 1755, Eleanor Wynkoop of Manor of Moreland 2. Robert Fulton m 1792, Sarah Powell, dau of Elisha Powell 3. Elisha Powell Fulton, b 1793 Fascinating. In 1792, Mary Fulton married Zebulon Warner at Berkeley Co, VA. (See Part 5). They named a son, Wyncoop Warner. According to the published Fulton/Hayden/Warner Genealogy, Mary Fulton is the daughter of a John Fulton of Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Northampton County is just north of the Manor of Moreland. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

Also since Mary was from South Huntington Township, Westmoreland Co, PA, have you checked the records in that area for this family ? Also perhaps John and his first wife had property they sold and she may be listed in the deed transaction releasing her dower rights. In the book, The Fulton Family of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 1712-1772-1940, by Ernest Schwartz Craighead, privately published 1940 (available from Higginson Publishing Co) on page 80 it states that Mary (Polly) Fulton daughter of Robert Fulton and Nancy Sloan married John McClintock and was mentioned in her father's will. She is bequeathed $800, one cow, three sheep, one feather bed and bedding, and the use of two rooms in the Mantion House when she is single and can work for herself. In connection with her father's will, she and her husband John McClintock signed an agreement in 1820. The book states it is assumed that she was born between 1789 and 1795. Robert Fulton's will was signed 25 Jan 1820 and proved 13 April 1820 and can be found in Westmoreland Co,PA will book 2 page 16. Roberta R. 3. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: {not a subscriber} Fulton Genealogy Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 16:31:29 -0800 (PST) From: BBriggs133@aol.com To: fulton-l@rootsweb.com, hirth@frontiernet.net Hello - I was conducting research on my family genealogy and happen to come across a reference to one of my ancestors, John McClintock, on the Fulton web page. I have been attempting to identify John's first wife who died in Ohio sometime in the early to mid 1800's. Your web site references a marriage between a John McClintock and Mary (Polly) Fulton. Here is some info on John - John McClintock was born in Fayette County, Penn., in 1789. He moved to Ross County, Ohio in 1796 (age 7) and was in the war of 1812. Having enlisted for during the war, he served six months as a substitute, in the meantime helping to build Fort Meigs. In 1841, he came to Wabash County, Indiana, and lived here until 1863 on the farm with his son Joseph. (History of Wabash County, Indiana, 1884) John's first wife died in Ohio and he married his 2nd wife (Elizabeth) in 1848. (History of Wabash County) His son Joseph was born in Shelby County, Ohio, Abt 1822. I would appreciate any information that you may have on this couple that might help me verify that there is a link between my ancestor and Mary Fulton. Thanks very much. 3. Folks, To learn some more about the Manor of Moreland area, check out the USGENWEB for Montgomery County, PA. http://www.usgenweb.net/ They have current township maps: http://www.montcopa.org/montco/map.htm that list the boroughs. I used the search engine at http://www.alltheweb.com/ and specified "Manor of Moreland" in the search string. There are many pages of information - I have not had time to read them all. Some that I did glance at include mention of MORE, WYNKOOP, YERKES, HOLME, COMLY, HUMPHREY, LUKENS in the following: 1)Sluby Dubree House 1706 (photo of stone structure) --------------------------------------------------- http://www.umha.com/sites/site2.html Description of Building: The original building was built by William Sluby when he married Sarah More, the daughter of Nicholas More from whom the Manor of Moreland took it’s name. The original field stone was unstuccoed and the original wing added later. 2)Nicholas Moore Biography (what a colorful individual - hot temper) - ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.bdopl.com/bionm.html b. c. 1638. arr. Oct. 1682, from London. d. May 1687. m. 1670 Mary Hedge (c. 1654-1694), later wife of John Holme*; children: Mary, Samuel, Nicholas, Sarah, Rebecca.... More had died intestate by 23 May 1687, when letters of administration on his estate were issued to his widow. She failed to settle the estate, and after her death in 1694, the administration devolved upon her second husband, John Holme.* No inventory of More's property has been located, but apparently he died considerably in debt in both England and Pennsylvania. On 7 March 1689 Philadelphia County orphans court approved the division of Moreland Manor among More's children, with Samuel More, the eldest son, receiving a double share and 600 acres reserved for sale to liquidate More's debts. In 1695 the Provincial Council authorized Holme to sell both Greenspring plantation and Samuel and Rebecca More's portions of Moreland, as the More estate remained over £370 in debt. [Roberta's clarification comment: I read that "Green Spring Plantation" was an estate of 280 acres in the Northern Liberties where Nicholas More lived and was buried. Source listed for this information was the Pd E 7, vol 8, 360) and PD=Philadelphia deeds. Northern Liberties is several townships west of the Manor of Moreland township.] 3)Charles Humphrey (ca 1689-1721) web page - ---------------------------------------- <genelea@inficad.com> http://frontpage.inficad.com/~genelea/humpcharhist.html Charles Humphrey (ca 1689-1721) his will that was written 11 Feb 1721/1722 in the "Manor of Moreland" township, county of Philadelphia. The early history of this area is very interesting! The settlement of Pennsylvania is generally considered as having been settled by William Penn, beginning in about 1681. But the English and Swedes had already made settlements on the west bank of the Delaware River previous to that time. The Moreland and Byberry areas were settled by the English from Bristol and Bedminster, so we a surmising this is where our Humphreys may have come from.... Mr. Morehead been in poor health almost since his arrival in America and died at his mansion, "Green Spring", in Moreland in 1689. Jon Holmes was empowered to sell the plantation, mansion and other land in Moreland to pay the debts of Mr, Moore. Six hundred acres were sold at public auction in 1679. We are guessing that between 1710 - 1715 was when Charles Humphrey acquired the 130 acres of land that he had when he died in 1721 - 1722. It should be noted here that Henry Comly (Jr), who was one of the executers of Charles will. He was a son of Henry Comly (Sr) and Joan Comly who were living in Warminster, Bucks CO. PA. 1721, but had come from Bedminster, England in 1682. (7) This could be a lead to the area that the Humphrey family came from before arriving in PA. Further research needs done here!. It is recorded that Henry Comly Jr. of Middletown, Bucks County purchased 600 acres of land in " Moreland" that had been sold at public auction in abt 1696 / 97. In 1701 - 1702 portions of this estate were divided into smaller sections to suit the purchasers and the population soon began to increase. It is thought that about 1710 - 1715 was when our Humphrey family purchased / leased the 130 acres that they had in 1721 / 22 when Charles died. Sources: 1. POTTS <allenp19@idt.net>, main source used:THE POTTS FAMILY IN GREAT BRITAIN AND AMERICA by THOMAS MAXWELL POTTS , 1901 96. Thomas POTTS was born in 1729. He died on Jul 26 1776 in Chelsea Forge, Sussex Co., New Jersey. He was christened. He was a millwright by trde and lived in Moreland Township for some time. On June 22, 1753, Walter Moore and Sarah his wife conveyed to Thomas Potts, millwright, of the Manor of Moreland, one helf of a certain corn mill, etc., and two parcels of land in Moreland. He subsequently removed to Sussex County, New Jersey, and settled at Chelsea Forge, where he had a landed estate. He was High Sheriff of Sussex County in 1772, and a Member of the Provincial Assembly in 1775 and 1776. He married Elizabeth Lukens, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Tyson) Lukens, Jan 16, 1753. He died July 29, 1776. His widow subsequently married Dr. John Rockhill, a widower with children. There were no children by this marriage, but some of the descendants by their former marriages intermarried. Dr. Rockhill was born March 22, 1726, and died April 7, 1798. Ellizabeth survived him. He was married to Elizabeth LUKENS (daughter of William LUKENS and Elizabeth TYSON). [Roberta's comment: I wonder if LUKENS is a spelling variation of LYCANS that Pat mentioned in Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 4) regarding (5 July 1753) land in Lower Dublin Twp., extending N.W. by Henry Lycan’s land, N.E. by David Fulton’s land and S.E. by Benjamin Engle’s land...] 5)Upper Moreland Historical Association - ------------------------------------- http://www.umha.com/committees.html Look under publications for several online copies of their newsletters. Look under site links for historical buildings an maps (some links of the houses I have listed below) 6) Wynkoop-Ruck House --------------------- http://www.umha.com/sites/site3.html General History: Not all of the Delaware Valley's early settlers came directly from Europe. The Wynkoop family was one example. Henry Wynkoop (1737-1816) was already involved in politics by the age of 23 as a member of the Provincial Assembly. Gerrit (or Gerardus) Wynkoop was listed as having taken up residence in the Morelands. It would seem the original farmhouse off Edgehill could have been built by John Van Buskirk or Garret Wynkoop. In 1776 Garret received compensation (119 pds) for damage done by the British. The tax of 1785 listed Garret and Andrew Van Buskirk as owning 2 slaves. Maps of 1861 show that the property was owned by Garret Wynkoop; in 1871 by William Wynkoop. 7)The Shelmireville Chicken House - -------------------------------- http://www.umha.com/sites/site7.html Description of Building: One of four buildings comprising “Shelmireville.” It is a masonry farmhouse, with 2 1/2 floors topped by a symetrically dormered attic. It has been completely reconstructed with original stones upon the original foundations. It has a hand dug well and an ice cave on the west side. The wood kitchen on the raceway was not rebuilt during the new construction (1920’s). Original Owner and Construction Date: The land was purchased by George Shelmire from Silas Yerkes in 1787. The “Chicken” or “Little” house was a workers' house for the Shelmire mills (two on the northwest corner and one to the south of this house). The reconstruction and addition of the large well and ice house was done by the Pearson Family in 1920. General History: There were many mills in existence in the immediate area when George Shelmire bought a gristmill from Silas Yerkes in 1787. In 1825, the sons of George Shelmire purchased more land to increase the head behind the dam so they could run another mill. By 1838 a plaster mill was added. The plaster was used to augment worn out farm fields. The Shelmire mill to south of this house, along the kitchen raceway, became known as “Bone Hill”. Have fun reading.... Roberta R. 3. Folks, To help facilitate our discussion about the Fulton + Wyncoop / Wynkoop relationships around Philadelphia, PA, I had my husband John scan some maps for us to reference. 1) Holme's Map of the Province of Pennsylvania with the Names of Original Purchases from William Penn, 1681. I believe this is the same as the 1687 version. Only the lower fourth (southeast section of the map has been scanned in to show the Manor of Moreland. May take a while to load into your browser. http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/discussiongrp/phil_land.gif 2) Southern portion of Philadelphia Co, PA 1734 (showing southern townships) by Harry C.
