    1. Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 18)
    2. Patrice Fulton Stark
    3. Is there a light at the end of this Fulton + Wynkoop tunnel? (I think so.) Prudent genealogists work from the present to the past. In an effort to shed more light on the Fulton family(ies?) living in Loudoun Co, VA, I studied the 1810 US Census information. ------------------------------------------------------ There is no 1790 or 1800 US Census for Loudoun County. ------------------------------------------------------ I found two separate indexes for the 1810 US Census. (1) Crickard, Madeline W. "Index to 1810 Virginia Census" (Parsons, West Virginia: McClain Printing Company) 1971. (2) Bentley, Elizabeth Petty. "Index to the 1810 Census of Virginia" (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company) 1980. The Crickard index is an alphabetical list of every entry. The author did not include page numbers so it is virtually impossible to match her list to the original record or determine the relative location of the various families. She identified these five Fultons: Abraham George John Robert Susan The Bentley index is alphabetical and includes the page number where the name is found. She identified these six Fultons in Loudoun County: Abe. 236 David 232 Geo. 298 John 243 Robert 240 Susan 291 Notice that Bentley did not change the first name abbreviations. Another good practice to follow! When I realized that Bentley found more Fultons, I double-checked Crickard's list and found the missing David -- identified as David FEELTON. There's another spelling variant we need to add to our list! * * * * * * * * * * Age brackets reported in 1810 Census Col. 1: male und 10 | Col. 6: female und 10 Col. 2: male 10 und 16 | Col. 7: female 10 und 16 Col. 3: male 16 und 26 | Col. 8: female 16 und 26 Col. 4: male 26 und 45 | Col. 9: female 26 und 45 Col. 5: male 45 over | Col. Donna recently found that a "Neel" Fulton enlisted in Regiment 57 at Loudoun Co, VA, for service during the War of 1812. In 1821, her Neal Fulton married Lucy Harris at Saline Co, Missouri. I've copied all the names from Cornelius Wynkoop to William Campbell for a reason. On 16 January 1809, William Campbell married Jane Wynkoop, daughter of Cornelius Wynkoop. Sec. Garrad Wynkoop test girl is 21. Andrew Campbell, father of groom, consented. Cornelius Wynkoop, father of girl, con'd & test. his daughter was born 14 December 1787. [Jewell, "Marriages," op cit., page 16.] The names Cornelius, Garrad/Gerrit, and Philip are consistent with the Wynkoop/Winecoop families at the Manor of Moreland in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Notice that Philip uses the second spelling, "Winecoop." Look back at the entry for Cornelius Wynkoop. Both Cornelius and the oldest female in the house are "45 and over", born 1765 or before. On 25 January 1787, Cornelius "Wyncoop" married Margaret Fulton at Montgomery Co., PA. [Marriage Records, Presbyterian Church, Abington, Montgomery Co., PA.] If we can prove that Cornelius, Garrad/Gerrit, and Philip Wynkoop/Wincoop of Loudoun County, VA, are connected to this marriage at the Abington Church in Montgomery County, then we are on our way to proving that Robert Fulton who died in 1798 at Loudoun County, was the same man who married Eleanor Wynkoop in 1755! Can anyone find a deed or other court document in Loudoun County identifying the wife of Cornelius Wynkoop? I just can't get it off my fingers! I copied all Fulton Census information for 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 in Loudoun County. I wish I had followed those Wynkoops! (Maybe next time.) 1. Re: Citations
    2. I wanted to add my "2 cents" about documentation. When I started genealogical research forty years ago, I didn't document where I obtained my information. How I lived to regret it. Now that I'm compiling my second book, I've had to go back and find the sources. Lost time and effort!!!! Take the time NOW to completely document your sources. Check out Elizabeth Shown Mills's book Evidence, Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian, (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1997 or Richard S. Lackey's Cite Your Sources, (Jackson, Mississippi: University Press of Mississippi, 1980). [I have no monetary interest in either book :-) ] Patt Fulton Austin, TX

    3. Like a duck on a June bug, I jumped on Dave's footnotes. I asked Dave Van Doren if I could use his footnotes as a lesson topic. I also asked him, "Where do you live and what's a June bug?" Being the good sport that he is, Dave said "Go ahead (sob) and use me as a horrible example." Not to worry, Dave. We're all family here. Then, he added: "P.S. Me and the June bugs live in OH (or is it June bugs and I?) Last year we had 17-year locusts instead of June bugs." Dave must be a political candidate. I really liked his answer, but I still don't know why ducks jump on June bugs. Which reminds me of footnotes. I'm not too concerned about the format of footnotes; I'm interested in the content. I also prefer the visual imagery of "Me and the June bugs..." to the "June bugs and I" construction. As we struggle to sort Fulton facts from fiction, footnotes are sometimes more important than the statements they support. However, footnotes are really under-appreciated, like mothers of teenagers. I hear comments like, "I enjoy gathering the information but I'm not that concerned about the sources", or "footnotes are too much trouble", or "I really hate reading through all those footnotes." Not me! That's my favorite part. * * * * * Here are my questions to Dave: Sources 1. “U.S. Census,” Loudoun Co, VA. [Which one?] 2. Abstracts of Loudoun Co, VA Wills from court house records, Leesburg. [Which Will, which Will Book, page, etc.?] 3. Hopkins, Margaret Lail, Index to the Tithables of Loudoun Co, VA 1758-1786. 4. Schreiner-Yantis, Netti, and Florence Love, The Personal Property tax Lists for 1787, Loudoun Co, VA, Genealogical Books in Print, Springfield, VA, 1986. 5. International Genealogical Index, Church of Jesus Christ of the Later Day Saints, Salt Lake City, UT. 1992. [Way too vague -- really need the source number code. There's a real difference between a Family Group Sheet someone submitted and an actual Court Document.] 6. King, J. Estelle Stewart, Abstracts of Wills, Inventories, and Administration Accounts of Loudoun Co, VA 1757-1800, Genealogical Pub. Co, Baltimore, 1984. 7. Data from the Charles Blair Tavenner Collection, in Thomas Balch public library, Leesburg, VA. [We need to figure out how to reference this man's work.] 8. Wertz, Mary Alice, Marriages of Loudoun Co, VA 1757-1853, Baltimore. 1985, in Thomas Balch public library, Leesburg, VA. 9. Champaign Co, OH Cemetery Records, Daughters of the American Revolution, in Urbana, OH public library. [Which Cemetery?] 10. “U.S. Census,” Champaign Co, OH. [Again, which one? Page Number or Township reference?] 11. Shenandoah Co, VA Marriages to 1850, Historic Series. [This is intriguing. I see that Shenandoah County was organized in 1771 from Frederick County.] Before my message hit the airwaves, Dave sent: "A revised list of sources... 1. “U.S. Census,” Loudoun Co, VA, 1810 p.279, 1820 p.133A, 1830 p.54. 2. Loudoun Co, VA Wills from court house records, Leesburg. Book Z,pp.414-416. 3. Hopkins, Margaret Lail, Index to the Tithables of Loudoun Co, VA, 1758-1786. 4. Schreiner-Yantis, Netti, and Florence Love, The Personal Property tax Lists for 1787, Loudoun Co, VA, Genealogical Books in Print, Springfield, VA, 1986, pp.27, 70. 5. “U.S. Census,” Loudoun Co, VA, 1840 p.226. 6. International Genealogical Index, Church of Jesus Christ of the Later Day Saints, Salt Lake City, UT. 1992. 8482505-0007. 7. King, J. Shenandoah Co, VA Marriages to 1850, Historic Series." * * * * * Thanks, Dave. I needed that. By the way, the International Genealogical Index (IGI) source number is very important. See Dave's revised Footnote #6: "8482505-0007". This source code reveals that the information came from a Family Group Sheet submitted in 1984, batch 82505, sheet 7. The online version of the IGI includes the name of the submitter. For 25 cents, you can order a copy of the submitted group sheet. How reliable is the IGI? Only as reliable as the person who submitted the information. Last summer, Dr. Nolen Fulton and I exchanged information regarding his family. He believed that he was a descendant of Alexander Fulton of Cecil County, Maryland, and I did not. I wrote a detailed summary of why he could not possibly be a descendant of this Fulton. "But that's what it says in the IGI" he told me. So I checked the IGI and found that a Terry Fulton submitted the information in 1993. I asked Dr. Fulton, "Do you know a Terry Fulton?" "Why yes," he replied, "that's my nephew." I explained that Terry submitted the information to the LDS church. "But I gave the information to Terry," said the good doctor. My point, exactly. * * * * * Well, I have a long list of Fultons to look up when I go to the Denver Public Library this Saturday. How about you? Dave closed his revised footnotes with the message "these should let anyone from Lonesome Pine CO find the material faster." Lonesome Pine? 1. Fulton and Banta
    2. Myrna Madigan
    3. While reading the Fulton-D Digest Volume 00 : Issue 31, concerning the Banta Family connections with Fultons, I remembered coming across references to the Banta surname while researching other family lines in southeastern Indiana. After a private email to Roberta, she encouraged me to post the following. My Fulton line derives from John Fulton born about 1733 in Kilkenny (maybe) Ireland. His wife was Jane Dills. The oldest child of this couple, as far as we know, was Samuel Fulton, born 1 Jul 1762 near Carlisle, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. At some time prior to 1780, John Fulton and his family moved to White Deer Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, for in that year, except for Samuel who was away with the militia, they were captured by Indians and taken to Canada, where they were kept for two years and four months, then released and returned to settle in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. This according to Samuel Fulton's Revolutionary pension application and the History of Dearborn County, Indiana, published 1885. The 1790 Federal Census of East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania enumerates John Fulton (living next to Francis Fulton) with three white males over sixteen years, one white male under sixteen years and four white females over sixteen years. We are inclined to believe this is our John Fulton. According to the same 1885 History of Dearborn County, Indiana, John Fulton, and his family, left Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1794 and moved westward, remained in Washington County, Pennsylvania, one year, and in the Spring of 1796 descended the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers and landed at Newport, Kentucky "with a view of locating at Lexington, Kentucky, where a brother of John Fulton had previously engaged in merchandising". They remained at Newport, about two years, then located on the present site of Rising Sun, Northwest Territory "The Gore", then Dearborn now Ohio County, Indiana, in 1798. This couple, along with their sons Samuel and Thomas, their daughter Mary, and Christopher Huston, who was Samuel Fulton's brother-in-law, and their families, were the first settlers at Rising Sun. Until the town of Rising Sun was platted in 1811, the site was known as Fulton's Landing. Sometime around (can't find my reference) 1813, Switzerland County, Indiana, was formed and the county seat of Vevay was established on the Ohio River about thirty miles south and west of Rising Sun. The town of Pleasant is in the north central part of Switzerland County, about twenty miles west southwest of Rising Sun. Enter the Banta Family. This will be brief because this is, thus far, not one of my lines of research. Nevertheless, the surname has cropped up enough times that I immediately recognized it. From the 1885 History of Switzerland County, Indiana, paraphrased: BANTA, Rev. Henry D., born Henry County, Kentucky in 1785, son of Daniel and Anna Banta. Henry D. Banta married Eleanor Van Osdol, had six children, then removed from Kentucky and settled in Pleasant Township, Switzerland County, Indiana, in 1816. He was forty years a Baptist minister, ordained in 1830. Served in the War of 1812. Was the father of thirteen children. VORIS, Cornelius A., born 1784 died 1863, married Catherine Woodfield. His parents were Albert A. Voris and Anna Banta of Pleasureville, Shelby County, Kentucky. Cornelius Voris was an elder of the Presbyterian Church and a Major in the War of 1812. Catherine Woodfield Voris died in 1833 and Cornelius Voris then married Mary Banta who was his mother's cousin. The community of Pleasant, in Pleasant Township, Switzerland County, was known as "the Dutch settlement". Brushy Fork Baptist Church, Pleasant Twp., Switzerland County, founded in 1818, developed from one of the most mixed populations in Jefferson and Switzerland Counties, drew it's membership from three groups of recent immigrants, the Irish Henry, Gilliland, Charlton families, The English Firth and Owen families, and the Scots families of Harper, Dalgleish, McGregor, Francis and Cowan. It also drew from pioneer families including Griffins and Greens and the Low Dutch families of Banta, Van Osdol, and Lentz. Pleasant Township Presbyterian Church dates from 3 Oct 1829. Original members Samuel Gregg, Charles Dawson, Mary Dawson, Richard Carnine, Dennis Carnine, John Bandy, Christopher Bergen, Isaac Vannice, Cornelius R. Voris, Henry P. Banta, Daniel H. Demaree, John Blunk, John D. List, Cornelius A. Voris. Although the Low Dutch formed the nucleus of the early church, it also drew upon the Scottish settlement which abutted it. Pleasant Grove Methodist Church was formed in Pleasant Township about 1832 and among it's early members were Abbie Van Osdol, Abraham and Rachel Banta, Theodore and Rachel Van Osdol. There are some intriguing similarities in names and birthdates between the families of John Fulton of Dearborn County, Indiana, and John Fulton who was the father of Jennie/Jane/Jeany Fulton who married Henry Banta in Kentucky. This Henry Banta was born in 1786 in (maybe) Mercer County, Kentucky, while the Indiana Henry Banta was born in 1785 in Henry County, Kentucky. Concerning the General Samuel Fulton "who lived on a large plantation outside of Carlisle, Kentucky", the Samuel Fulton of Indiana was born at or near Carlisle, Pennsylvania. I'd like to know how Carlisle, Kentucky came by it's name. Samuel Fulton, of Indiana, was a Revolutionary War pensioner, an officer of the militia of the Northwest Territory, a justice of the peace, an associate judge, all before Dearborn County was formed in 1803. He was also a founding member of the Presbyterian Church at Rising Sun. Lastly, according to the 1885 History of Dearborn and Ohio Counties, Indiana, John Fulton was a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, came with his father to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had three brothers, Robert, Hugh and Andrew and the family were among the founders of the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. John Fulton was apprenticed to a blacksmith, his brother Robert to a tailor, and brothers Hugh and Andrew to farmers. It goes on to say that this brother, Robert, was the father of the inventor of the steamboat. Likewise, John Fulton of Kentucky, father-in-law of Henry Banta, was an uncle of Steamboat Bob and George Washington slept there, too. Well, maybe....... The most edifying information I have received from this list was the recent posting regarding the twenty given names that were repetitively given to Fulton children. No wonder we have a "can of worms"! Sorry to make this short. I'll be glad to provide sources and/or details at a later time, but I'm a tax accountant, among other things, and this is my busiest time of year. Still, I'll keep my ear to the ground about this matter. Myrna Madigan, from Thomas, s/o John Fulton, Dearborn Co IN '"hiding out in the weeds and woods of the Great Illinois Prairie"

    3. First things first, I asked for help locating "Watervliet", origin of the Shaker movement here in the US. Tom Fulton of Clarence, NY, writes: "Watervliet is near Albany - home of the famous Watervliet Arsenal." Yeah, right, the "famous" Watervliet Arsenal! Thanks Tom, now its perfectly clear! (At least I've heard of Albany.) * * * * * Speaking of New Yorkers, our very own Fulton List Owner, (listowner?), Roberta (Fulton) Hirth has outdone herself with the Banta family find. [See her message titled: "Re: Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 13) and more Banta data", posted 5 Mar 2000] James L. Fulton of Virginia also alerted me to this Banta source. Thank you both! Let's see if I can correctly restate the pertinent information penned by Elsa M. Banta (1983) in her book, "Banta Pioneers...." Henry and Sally (-?-) Banta were parents of at least four children: a. Polly Banta, b 3 Mar 1785 b. Henry Banta, b 20 Nov 1786 m Jennie Fulton c. Margaret Banta, b 17 Nov 1788 m Samuel Fulton d. Andrew Banta, b 9 Jan 1790 This Banta family may have lived in Mercer Co, KY, before settling at Bourbon Co, KY, which is the same location and time frame for Elisha and Anna (Fulton) Thomas of Mercer Co, KY. Author Banta also writes that John Fulton, who died 1822 in Mississippi, is the father of these two Fulton children: a. Samuel Fulton ("General" Sam of Nicholas County, KY) b. Jennie/Jane/Jeany Fulton, wife of Henry Banta Now we get to the really good stuff, how John Fulton is the uncle of THE Robert Fulton. (I'm keeping a "critical perspective," Roberta.) I'll add this claim to our growing collection of "Great Myths of THE Robert Fulton." [Let's see, if we agree that the father of THE Robert (1765-1815) is the tailor Robert Fulton of Lancaster Town, Lancaster Co, PA (bef 1739-d bet 1772/74) and if ... let's hold that can of worms for another day!] I was disappointed that there does not appear to be a mention of the Cornelius Banta who married Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of Elisha and Anna (Fulton) Thomas. However, I did stumble over yet another Henry Banta reference. I "surfed" over to Rootsweb's Switzerland County, Indiana, page (checking for new information on David Fulton, son of Hugh Fulton of Loudoun Co, VA). A volunteer at this site is currently uploading Will Abstracts (David Fulton's Will Abstract is online) and I was surprised to see a planned entry for the Will of Henry Banta, Esq. Coincidence? Or, are we really on to something? Thanks Roberta, thanks Jim, for the Banta family connections! Thanks Tom for the famous Watervliet Arsenal. Now, I need to digest some new information that has arrived regarding this nest of Fultons and Wynkoops living in Loudoun Co., VA, at the turn of the 19th Century. First, to answer Pat Stark's query "What's a Tithable" (in Loudoun Co. in particular) - Prior to 1787, households in VA were taxed based on the head of the household, the no. of horses, mares, colts, mules one owned. In October 1786, a law was passed which mandated the 1787 personal property assessments include: (1) an accounting of the name of every white male Tithable Over 21 Years; (2) the number of white males between 16 & 21 years; (3) the no. of slaves over 16 & those under 16 yrs.; (4) a listing of their horses, cattle & carriages; (5) also the names of all persons to whom Ordinary Licenses and Physician's Licenses were issued. In Volume 3 of "The 1787 Census of Virginia", compiled by Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Speakman Love (in 3 volumes), the following Fultons are listed (under "List A", p. 27): (1) Robert Fulton: Charged w/Tax--self - 4 horses, mules, etc., 10 cattle (no males 16-21; no blacks above 16 or under 16) (2) David Fulton: Charged w/tax-Robert Fulton (nothing listed under the other columes. (3) Robert Fulton: Charged w/tax-self (nothing listed under other columes). (3) Hugh Fulton: Charged w/tax-self - only shows 3 horses, mules, etc.; 3 cattle. Fultons listed under "List C", p. 57, Personal Property Taxes, 1787: (1) William Fulton: Charged w/tax--John Daniel In a book titled "Tithables, Loudoun Co., VA 1775-1781", edited & published by Ruth & Sam Sparacio, McLean, VA (Fairfax Co., VA), The Antient Press - 1992, Vol. III: "A List of Tythables for Shelburne Parish taken by Thomas Lewis 1775 (pp 776-782)" {I assume these pages refer to actual pages from the recorded taxes}: p. 4 - Robert Fulton, David Fulton -- 2 (listed this way throughout the book) "Tythables taken by Wm. Douglas 1775 (pp 783-787)": p. 6 - Hugh Fulton - 1 "A List of Tithables taken by Thos. Repress (pp 1318-1319)" (no date shown): p. 29 - Robt. Wilcox, Robt. Fulton, David Fulton -- 3 (all listed on same line - not sure what this means) "List of Tythables taken in Feb. 1777 (p. 808-820)" (no name shown): p. 35 - Robert Fulton, David Fulton -- 2 "William Doughty's List No. 2, List of Tythables taken in 1779 (p. 896-904): p. 65 - Robert Fulton & son -- 2 Hugh Fulton - 1 "Loudoun Co. List of Tithables for Shelburne Parish 1780 taken by Simon Triplett (pp 954-986)": p. 82 - Robert Wilcox -- 1 Robert Fulton, David Fulton -- 2 {this time Wilcox is shown on a separate line from the Fultons} To Dave Van Doren -- The will of Robert Fulton (1763-1841) {dates from the marriage records as recorded in the Charles Blair Tavenner Collection} -- his will was proven in court May 10, 1841, "by oaths of George Richard and John Janney, the subscribing witnesses thereto... and on the motion of William Fulton the Executor therein named who qualified as such and with M. C. Shumate and David P. Fulton his securities..." (I made a copy of the will from the Will Book Z, p. 414-416, located at the Circuit Court in Leesburg. If you do not have a copy and would like one, let me know (with a mailing address). As to the "Charles Blair Tavenner Collection", I was told yesterday by one of the librarians at the Balch Library in Leesburg, that he had donated his collection of genealogy material to the Virginia Archives in Richmond, VA and staff of the Balch Library had photocopied the books for their library. She said that in one of the books he explains that he researched will books, property records, tax lists and marriage records in the Loudoun Co. courts to obtain his information. As soon as I have a full day to devote to the task, I will check the marriage records at the courthouse and see if I can find any more information that will distinguish the various David & Robert Fultons from each other. There is a will (which I copied earlier) for a Robert D. Fulton (1848-1933) [Will Book 3X, p. 256-257, Loudoun Co., VA]. The will was written June 15, 1921; he wrote a codicil March 25, 1930 (p. 257), and the will was proven in court July 10, 1933 (one record shows that he died July 4, 1933). His codicil stated that "after my debts and funeral expenses are paid and before my estate is divided into five portions, as therein directed, I hereby direct the payment of $3,000.00 to Arthur J. Pierpoint of Paeonian Spring, VA". [Note: Massie Pierpoint apparently died prior to March 25, 1930 when he wrote the codicil leaving her share to her husband- his executor also.] When the Court Clerk recorded the Fiduciary Account, (typed copy), he listed it as: "Arthur J. Pierpoint, Executor to estate of Robert B. Fulton, dec.," -- another error on the part of a clerk - the will was also a typed record and shows "I, Robert D. Fulton of Round Hill, Loudoun County, Virginia..." (approx. 8 miles sw of Leesburg). He appointed Arthur J. Pierpoint as Executor. A list of heirs was recorded on page 254-255 (Fiduciary Book 18), in the Fiduciary Account, presented to court Nov. 16, 1933 (and a list of heirs was also recorded on p. 258 of Will Book 3X and shows their relationship to Robert D. Fulton). He doesn't mention any children or a wife in the will. His list of heirs were: (1) A. J. Pierpoint of Paeonion Springs, VA (also near Leesburg); (2) Mary James, Sarah Mock, Malinda James - sisters, (all of) Hamilton, VA; (3) Lula Fulton Cooper and Mary Fulton Higdon, both of Herndon, VA} Robert's nieces -- daughters of John Israel Fulton, (Robert's brother); (4) Lillian Fulton Allder of Bluemont, VA, Massie Fulton Pierpoint} daus. of Charles Edgar Fulton, (brother to Robert) -- (Massie was also wife to Arthur J. Pierpoint); (5) J. A. Pierpoint, Edgar W. Pierpoint} grand nephews -- sons of Massie & A.J. Pierpoint of Paeonian Springs, VA. In the marriage records copied by Mr. Tavenner, he shows that: (1) John E. Fulton (b. Penn.) 1817, d. Loudoun Co., VA 1873; m. 1840 Massie (Massa) Warner (1821-1918), dau. of Israel Warner (this info is also listed in a genealogy of the Warner family of Loudoun Co. in the Balch Library) [no record of who his father was]. There is a will for John E. Fulton (WB 3D, p. 244 and inventories), also a will for his wife Massa Fulton recorded in WB 3X, p. 90 - I did not copy these wills. Children of John E. & Massie Warner Fulton (according to Tavenner): (2) John Fulton (Jr.??) (1842-ca 1862) - killed in Civil War (2) Charles Edgar Fulton (1844-1915); m. 1873 Charlotte Ellen Hope (1845-1914), dau. of John A. Hope; (3) Massie Fulton (1883-1921), m. Arthur J. Pierpoint, Paeonian Springs, VA (4) J. A. Pierpoint (4) Edgar W. Pierpoint (3) Lillian Grace Fulton (1881-1964) m. 1911 Joseph Thos. Allder (3) Hattie Lee Fulton (1874-1910) m. (unknown) (3) Myrtle Alice Fulton (1882-1915) (2) John Israel Fulton (1846-ca. 1933) m. 1876 Susan Cooksey (1851-?), dau. of Wm. Cooksey; (2) Robert D. Fulton (1848-1933) - no wife shown (2) Malinda (Linnie) Fulton (1851-1934) m. George Wm. James (1852-1954) (2) Sarah A. Fulton (1853-1934) m. 1877 James E. Mock, Hamilton, VA (2) Mary W. Fulton (1855-1938) m. 1879 Frank James I believe Pat Stark mentioned in one of her reports (correct me if I am stating this wrong Pat) that no one could find the will of Hugh Fulton of Loudoun Co., VA, because it was filed under a William Cox's name in the court records. In a book of "Deed Abstracts of Loudoun Co., VA (1757-1762)" compiled & published by Ruth & Sam Sparaco, McLean, VA; there is listed (p. 13, Deed Bk. A, p. 110-114) "Indenture...3rd October 1757...Wm. Cox of County of Orange in Province of North Carolina and Benjamin Grayson of County of Prince William, VA....original deed dated 8 November 1841 and registered in Lib. E. Fol. 383 - Wm. Cox & Cathron (x) Cox (sic). Just noted this as another example of the connection between VA Fultons and others in NC. That's all I have to offer this time - I will try to do some more research about these Loudoun Co. Fultons and report back later. Carol (Fulton) Proctor

    1. Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 17), from Dave Van Doren
    2. Patrice Fulton Stark
    3. Correspondent Dave Van Doren writes . . . * - * - * - * To all Fulton puzzle readers - Hi. After reading Patrice Fulton Stark's Pt 15 of the ongoing Fulton discussion, I pulled the family group sheet of Robert Fulton, Jr. and Sarah Powell up on my monitor. What's in a name immediately came to mind (the image can't be reproduced here, but the information is listed below). The names of the 5 sons of Robert and Sarah simply reek of family connections. Elisha Wynkoop, eldest son, has the same forename as his maternal grandfather, Elisha Powell, and the same middle name as his paternal grandmother' surname, Wynkoop. I had been willing to bet the ranch that his grandmother was a Wynkoop even before finding the record of a Robert Fulton marriage to an Eleanor Wyncoop, and of course I jumped on that bit of data like a duck on a June bug. Robert Massie, second son, has the same forename as his father and the same middle name as his maternal grandmother's surname, Massey (never mind the difference in spelling). David Powell, third son, has the same forename as his paternal uncle (not shown on the screen) and the same middle name as his maternal grandfather, Elisha Powell. The other two sons, John and William, whose names also are not shown on the screen, were forenames of younger brothers of Sarah Powell. The forenames of Sarah's other two brothers had already been used (Elisha and Robert). BUT, "how do I KNOW that?" Well, let's start at the "beginning" with David Powell Fulton, (actually I've only seen David P. Fulton in OH documents) who ended his days in Champaign Co, OH. According to Champaign Co, OH DAR cemetery records, a David P. Fulton d. 2-12-1865, b. 5-10-1797. Birth dates on tombstones are not necessarily "set in concrete", as it were, but his wife outlived him, so it is probably correct. Or at least its a reasonable bet that the Mrs. Jane Fulton who died in 1889 was the same Jane Carr who married a David Fulton in 1822 in Shenandoah Co, VA records (oops, that probably was the wrong county - better look it up again - although a Jane Carr married a David Fulton 23 May 1822 in Loudoun Co, VA according to a Carr family history found in the Thomas Balch library). What I DON'T KNOW for sure is whether the David P. Fulton (born in VA according to census records) of Champaign Co, OH was the David Powell Fulton, son of the Robert Fulton whose Will was recorded in Loudoun Co, VA 4 July 1836. The Will does mention a daughter-in-law, Jane E. Fulton, which helps strengthen the case. The birth date of David P. Fulton would "fit" the age of the third child of Robert and Sarah H. (Powell) Fulton. The siblings of David Powell Fulton are established in the above-mentioned Will. So, do we really KNOW who was David Powell Fulton's mother? The Will of Elisha Powell, 26 Feb 1796, lists his beloved daughter, Sarah H. Powell, now Salrah (sic) H. Fulton. Robert Fulton, Jr. and Sarah Powell had a marriage bond of 11 Sep 1792 in Loudoun Co. An Elisha Powell attested to the bride's age and consented to the marriage. The actual marriage took place 26 Sep 1792 in Loudoun Co. according to the IGI, which although not the most reliable source, at least has the wedding after the marriage bond rather than before it. I suppose we must ASSUME that the Elisha Powell of the marriage bond was the father of Sarah who married Robert Fulton, Jr, and Robert Fulton, Jr. was the Robert Fulton of the Will of 1836. I can live with those assumptions. Now, however, things become more dicey. Robert Fulton Jr's Misc Notes (see below) contain material that might or might not pertain to the father of David Powell Fulton. Then there are the questions of whether this Robert Fulton, Jr. was the Robert Fulton, son of Robert Fulton of the 1798 Will, and son of the Eleanor Wynkoop who married a Robert Fulton 20 Aug 1755 in Philadelphia, PA. Those questions have been discussed by the group in previous parts of the ongoing debate. All I can add to this part of the discussion is that when peering at the picture on my monitor, it sure LOOKS like it all hangs together. If not, computer files are easily changed. 1. Re: Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 13) and more Banta data
    2. Roberta (Fulton) Hirth
    3. Pat, In the book, Banta Pioneers and Records of the Wives and Allied Families, prepared by Elsa M. Banta, Soldiers Grove, WI, 1983, there is additional information on the Bantas. Available: LDS Library Salt Lake City Book 929.273 B228be, 269 pages. Microfilm FHL US/CAN Film, 1321105 Item 20 In the family history catalog at http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp it describes the book as follows: Includes Demarest, Fulton, Montfort, Salmon, Shuck, Terhune and related families. Epke Jacobse (b.ca.1619), son of Jacob Epkesz and Reytske Sickedr, married Sitske Dircksda about 1650, and in 1659 the family immigrated from The Netherlands to Vlissingen (later Flushing), Long Island, New York. Descendants (most used the surname Banta after the late 1600s) lived in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Kentucky (a few of the Kentucky Banta family became members of the two Shaker colonies in Kentucky), Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and related families. It contains material on the Banta family and General Samuel Fulton as follows on pages 157,158,176,177 (as usual I try not to accept any of this as fact and try to keep a critical perspective, but it may help provide us with some clues). 1 Henry BANTA + Sally BANTA 2 Polly BANTA b 3 March 1785 d 1860 + George DWELLY 2 Henry BANTA b 20 Nov 1786 possibly in Mercer Co, KY at age 4 moved with parents to Bourbon Co, KY m 25 Aug 1808 + Jennie/Jane/Jeany FULTON Daughter of John FULTON, a brother of the father of Robert Fulton of steamboat fame (no proof given). Jennie is a sister to General Samuel FULTON who marries Margaret BANTA (see below). Henry BANTA and wife Jennie lived in Bourbon Co, KY. Jennie's father John Fulton bought 160 acres in Barr Township, Daviess Co, IN in 1818 and that Henry and Jennie Banta later settled on that land. States it is believed that Jennie Fulton sprang from a line that purchased land in Donegal Township, near Donegal Quaker Meeting House in Lancaster Co, PA. Says John Fulton d 1822 in Mississippi leaving as heirs Jennie Fulton Banta, Nancy Fulton Stewart, and Samuel Fulton. Henry and Jennie (Fulton) Banta name one of their children James Stewart BANTA. [Do you think this suggests a connection to the Samuel and Elizabeth (Stewart) Fulton of Donegal,PA ? For this John to not die until 1822 and still be an uncle to Robert of steamboat fame, he would have to have been VERY old] 2 Margaret BANTA b 17 Nov 1788 m 27 June 1808 + General Samuel FULTON of Nicholas Co, KY Brother to Jennie Fulton listed above. Served in the army with George Rogers Clark. Member of the KY legislature, serving in both houses 1824-1832. Lived on a large plantation outside of Carlisle, KY. Members of the Presbyterian church in Carlisle. He was one of the church's first ruling elders. Had 10 children. 2 Andrew BANTA b 9 Jan 1790 + Elizabeth (Betsy) HAYDEN m 4 Aug 1814, her maternal grandmother was a sister to Daniel BOONE 3 Mary Jane BANTA b 1 April 1816 + William GILLESPIE m 17 Nov 1853,a second marriage He was son of Gabriel and Elizabeth (Rice) Gillespie. William and Mary Jane moved to Hancock Co, IN. [Pat, do you know if this William Gillespie is related to the James Gillespie of Little Britain Twp, Lancaster Co. who gets a marriage license with Jane (Denny) Fulton, second wife of deceased William Fulton, on 27 March 1741 at the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA ? Jane Denny is the daughter to Walter Denny, whose property borders William Fulton's in Lancaster Co. And Robert Fulton the tailor and father of Robert Fulton of steamboat fame subsequently buys the property that William Fulton once owned. And you had mentioned that the two sisters Rachel and Elizabeth Thomas married the two brothers Robert and Samuel Denny, who are the grandchildren of Walter Denny. So that would make Jane (Denny) Fulton Gillespie an aunt to Robert and Samuel Denny (I hope I did not get this confused - please correct me if I did mess this up ). So wouldn't it be a nice coincidence if the second generation of the Gillespies were in the same area in KY as the Dennys and the Fultons. By the way, I always wondered why James Gillespie/Gillespey and Jane (Denny) Fulton married in Philadelphia rather than in Lancaster. Either one or both of them had family in Phildadelphia or they moved out of Lancaster to Philadelphia. - Any thoughts on this ?] 3 Sally Ann BANTA b 15 Oct 1817 + Henry ARNOLD resided Greencastle, Putnam Co, IN m 17 Jan 1839 3 Eliza Ellen BANTA b 4 March 1820 + Barton W. GRAVES m 23 April 1841 3??? maybe more - did not copy next page... Says Henry BANTA and his parents were probably part of the famous Cane Ridge revival meetings. The family were supporters of the newly founded Disciples of Christ Church. The Rev. Finley, a North Carolinian, settled at Cane Ridge about this time and opened a log cabin "seminary" about a half mile from the historic meeting house. A map shows a Banta settlement about 2 o'clock north east of North Middletown, Bourbon Co, KY on the border of Nicholas Co, KY near Hinkston Creek. Roberta R. 1. re:Repetitive Fulton names
    2. Norma F. Jennings
    3. If you ever wondered why all the Fultons named their children by the same names, there were only approximately twenty given first names used by the Scots Irish during the early settlement days. By now, we know what most of those twenty names were: Hugh, John, James, William, Andrew, David, Joseph, Isaac, Samuel, Robert, Thomas, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, Elinor, Jane (Jean), Ann, Margaret, Janet, Eunice. They gradually picked up other names as they went along but these are the most common ones you will see. There were a few nicknames Nancy, Peggy, Polly, Betsey, and Sally......Nancy was a nickname for Mary Agnes, Peggy for Margaret, Polly for Mary and Sally for Sarah.
