    1. [FULTON] Migration Paths to Ohio
    2. Roberta (Fulton) Hirth
    3. I saw an article listed in the Generations Heritage Quest Newsletter dated April 11, 2000 about migration roads to Ohio - it is a short article well worth reading. The newsletter states: "Getting Stumped on Zane's Trace" by Award-winning Author, WILLIAM DOLLARHIDE Do your ancestors have you stumped? Well, it could be that some of your ancestors were stumped too - on Zane's Trace. Here is a bit of history on the earliest wagon roads your ancestors used to travel to their new lands in the Ohio Country. http://www.genealogybulletin.com/HTML/current.html By the way, the booklet that is advertised at the end of that web page, "Map Guide to American Migration Routes 1735-1815" has been extremely helpful to me. I recommend it for your reference library. There are a lot of Fultons is Ohio. Florence and I are trying to locate a "lost branch" whom we think may have migrated to Ohio with some neighbors from Orange Co, New York (Comfort, Crawford, Bookstaver, Dirkee, Barkley, Fraser) between 1810-1820 or a little later because land was cheap. We think his name was Elander Fulton, b. 19 Feb 1788 at 116 Washington St, Manhattan, NY. But Elander may have been a nickname or corruption of Alexander Fulton. This Fulton line just disappears into thin air, but several neighbors are documented as going to Ohio, so we are trying to learn where the neighbors settled in Ohio. The reference books help us to better understand what land was available and how the travelers reached Ohio. Perhaps this will help us to locate our "needle in the haystack". Roberta R. 1. [FULTON] ROOTSWEB resources - how to search for OXLEY connections
    2. Roberta (Fulton) Hirth
    3. Folks, Just wanted to show how some of ROOTSWEB's features can help us to glean information on a topic, such as the surname OXLEY in Loudoun Co, VA and the surname FULTON in Hilltown, Bucks Co, PA that was mentioned in some of the previous notes on this list. I will briefly show how five of ROOTSWEB's many features can be used: I) ROOTSWEB USGENWEB(to search geographic areas) II) ROOTSWEB WorldConnect GEDCOM files (to search surnames) III) ROOTSWEB Mailing list archives (search surname or geogr.lists) IV) ROOTSWEB Surname List V) ROOTSWEB Surname Resources I) ROOTSWEB USGENWEB (provides geographical search) --------------------------------------------------- http://www.usgenweb.net/thestates.html Select Graph or text list of states, Select PA, Scroll down select to Bucks County and select it - Search surnames (no Fultons) - History of Boroughs and Towns: not too much on Hilltown which is located on the Bucks Co/Montgomery Co line just 12 miles northwest of Abington and Moreland in Montgomery Co, PA. Notice that the spelling is Hilltown rather than Hillstown, but it is a common error to add the extra "S". When doing a search using a computer, you will need to search both spelling variations. There is interesting data on Doylestown Township, which is just southeast of Hilltown Township - talks about the "Walking Purchase" or the "Great Walk of 1737" which was used to establish new boundaries for Bucks, CO, PA. - Notice the "Boards" for Bucks Co (a feature provided by ROOTSWEB for all counties and mailing lists, which as more volunteers post their data will provide a tremendous source of online information focused on specific areas of interest. These "Boards" are categorized into Query, Bible, Biography, Deeds, Obits, Pensions, Wills. There were no pertinent Fulton or Oxley entries on the Bucks Co Boards. - Notice the list of Historical/Library addresses - very handy information for writing or calling for more information. II) ROOTSWEB WorldConnect GEDCOM Project ---------------------------------------- http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ Search the GEDCOM data Currently Online Search for Surname Oxley, Given name Henry, Hit Search button Notice there are several entries for Henry Oxley b May 1699 in NJ d Mar 1777 in Loudoun Co, VA Go to the tenth entry submitted by oxeyf by double clicking on Henry Oxley's name to see the family group sheet as follows: Oxley Genealogy 664 total entries, last updated Tue Mar 21 08:47:48 2000 Linda Spears <lindalou@citznet.com> ID: I204 Name: Henry Oxley Title: III Sex: M Birth: 11 MAY 1699 in Burlington County, New Jersey Death: 17 MAR 1777 in Loudoun County, Virginia Burial: Gum Farm, Loudoun County, VA Religion: Ketoctin Baptist, Loudoun County, Virginia Father: Henry Oxley Marriage 1 Mary Everrit b: 16 JUN 1697 Married: 1722 in Hunterdon County, NJ Children 1. But Henry Oxley's grandchildren Bethaney Oxley b 1750 who marries a Sanders (perhaps Barthaney Sanders mentioned in the will is her daughter) and Brittain Oxley b 1755 could be the Oxley mentioned in the will that Carolyn Proctor found that mentioned Robert Fulton witnessed the Will of Henry Oxley of Loudoun Co, VA, on 6 February 1776, and Oxley's Will was proved in Court on 13 October 1777 by "R. F. Fulton", Brittain Oxley and Ann Oxley. Notice the surnames the children and grandchildren marry such as Steven/Stephens, Howell, a lover Thomas Harris, Sanders, Rice, etc. If you study where some of the children and grandchildren of Henry Oxley settle, you will see areas such as Belmont Co,OH; Coshocton Co,OH; Clinton Co,OH; Rush Co,IN; Culpepper Co,VA. I was excited when I read that Henry Oxley was from Burlington Co, NJ because remember the David Fulton of Cheltenham Twp advertised his lost horse in the Penn Gazette in 1756. The horse was brought from Bordontown, NJ which is in Burlington, Co. (Fulton-L discussion list Subject:Fulton and Wyncoop or Wynkoop in MA/NH, NY, NJ, PA, VA Dated Fri, 21 Jan 2000) To find this note, go to the ROOTSWEB mailing list archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Specify for Name of List: fulton-l, Click on SUBMIT QUERY button For QUERY specify the keyword "21 Jan 2000" [keep the quotes around the date] Select year 2000, Hit SEARCH button ROOTSWEB will show you all the messages posted on that date, along with their subjects. II) ROOTSWEB Mailing List Archives ---------------------------------- In this section we will search for FULTON in the OXLEY mailing list and in the PABUCKS mailing list (which is the mailing list for Bucks County, PA). For a full transcription of Henry Oxley's will, go to the ROOTSWEB mailing list archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Specify for Name of List: oxley-l, Click on SUBMIT QUERY button For QUERY specify the keyword FULTON, select year 1999, Hit SEARCH button Select FULL on 1 of 3 entries shown: "LOUDOUN COUNTY WILL BOOK B Pg-57 At a Court held for Loudoun County September 8th 1777 This Inventory and appraisement of WILLIAM LANE decd was return'd to Court and rderedvLo be recorded. pp.188-189 IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I HENRY OXLEY of Virginia in Loudoun County being weak in Body but of Sound Memory blessed be God do this Day February 6th in the year 1776 make and publish this my last Will ..." etc. I also searched the PABUCKS mailing list for Fulton, but did not find any appropriate data. The search for Hilltown provided me with other surnames in the area that may be useful to establish a community of people. IV) ROOTSWEB Surname List -------------------------- http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi Specify Surname OXLEY and Location VA, Hit SUBMIT button. The list gives me the migration paths of OXLEY who go through VA and the email/address so I can contact those researchers to see if they have come across a Fulton connection (other than the witness in Henry Oxley's will which I can mention to them). Have you checked out the FULTON entries on the ROOTSWEB Surname list lately ? Make sure your entry is listed. This list now permits you to add a comment field that allows you to summarize the details of your research. I just updated mine by using the "Add or Edit Your Surnames" feature on the first page where you specify the search. V) ROOTSWEB Surname Resources ----------------------------- http://resources.rootsweb.com/~clusters/surnames/index.html The Surname resource page for individual surnames provides "one stop shopping" for some of the surname functions discussed above. I looked up the Oxley Surname Resource Page because I wanted to search the individual "Boards" for any Fulton leads, but there were none. To search just the specific board that is attached to the surname, double click on the icon QUERY, BIBLE, BIOS, DEEDS, OBITS, PENSIONS, WILLS. The search box just below the banner of ICONS is a global search that will allow you to search all the entries for all the Boards for all the mailing lists and USGENWEB pages in the world. If you look at the FULTON Surname resource page at http://resources.rootsweb.com/~clusters/surnames/f/u/FULTON/ you will see only a few queries listed and no real entries in the other categories, but this will change over time. These boards are a relatively new feature and ROOTSWEB last week created the feature that will allow me to link any entry posted on these "Boards" to automatically be posted on the fulton-l mailing list. That will be a very useful function, once I get it to work. Have fun using these ROOTSWEB tools. Roberta R. 1. Three Marriages, Philadelphia, PA
    2. Patrice Fulton Stark
    3. Three is a crowd but it is also quite popular. Three Tenors, Three Divas, and now I present: "Three Marriages at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia." * * * * * Marriage #1: Lettice Fulton m John Caldwell (1731) On 28 August 1731, Lettice Fulton married John Caldwell at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. This marriage record is found among the surviving records of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. (Thank you, James L. Fulton, Jr. of Sterling, Virginia!) The marriage record is a two-column list written in tiny script containing about 70 marriages per page. This document is written in the same hand and appears to be contemporary to the period. It may be the personal record maintained by Rev. Jedediah Andrews. Rev. Jedediah Andrews was the minister of the First Presbyterian Church as early as 1698 and served until his death in 1747. Rev. Andrews occasionally supplied other churches in the area. The Abington Presbyterian Church, organized in 1714 at the Manor of Moreland, was served by Rev. Malachi Jones. Mr. Jones died 28 January 1729 and "For two years after his decease Rev. Jedediah Andrews occasionally officiated; but it was not until 1731 that Mr. Richard Treat was formally called." and Rev. Richard Treat "...was installed, by Philadelphia Presbytery pastor of the church at Abingdon [sic], Pa., December 30th, 1731." [Source: Nevin, Alfred, D.D., LL.D., Editor. "Enclyclopedia of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America: Including the Northern and Southern Assemblies" (Philadelphia: Presbyterian Encyclopedia Publishing Co., 1884).] In other words, on the date of Lettice Fulton's marriage, 28 August 1731, there was a vacancy at the Abington Presbyterian Church. While it is probable that Rev. Jedediah Andrews performed this marriage, it is not certain that this marriage took place in Philadelphia. It might have taken place at Abington Presbyterian Church or some other location. * * * * * Marriage #2: Jane Fulton m James Gillespie (1741) Ten years later, the same marriage list includes one other Fulton marriage. Only one. On 27 March 1741, Jane Fulton married James Gillespie at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. Jane Fulton is the widow of William Fulton and the daughter of Walter Denny, residents of Drumore Township, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. That last sentence is a Fulton show-stopper and summarizes years of research and collaboration by Ann Irwin, James L. Fulton, Jr., William Denny, and yours truly, Patrice Stark. Just in case you missed it: ------------------------------------------------------------------ * * * * * Fulton Show-Stopper Statement * * * * * Jane Fulton is the widow of William Fulton and the daughter of Walter Denny residents of Drumore Township, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania ------------------------------------------------------------------ William Fulton of Drumore, according to Lancaster County historians Ellis & Evans, is the grandfather of THE Robert Fulton. ["History of Lancaster County, PA" 1883. For an opposing viewpoint, see Futhey & Cope, "History of Chester County, PA". They favor Alexander Fulton of Chester County for this honor.] Most published information will lead you to believe that William Fulton married Mary Smith. Further, you will find statements that Robert Fulton, father of THE Robert Fulton, married his first cousin, Mary Smith. It is unlikely that you will find any reference to the widow of William Fulton, Jane, daughter of Walter Denny. How do I know that? In 1734, William Fulton of Drumore Twp, received a Pennsylvania warrant for 150 acres situated on the Conowingo Creek. In 1737, Walter Denny patented the adjacent tract (formerly owned by Richard Beeson). Denny and Fulton were living here as early as 1732, possibly earlier. (Lancaster Co. Minute Book K, 1st month 1732/33). No marriage record between William Fulton and Jane Denny has been found. Similarly, no marriage record between William Fulton and Mary Smith has been found. On 25 March 1741, Jane Fulton received Letters of Administration for William Fulton, deceased, Walter Denny and Samuel Boyd, witnesses. Walter Denny submitted the inventory of William Fulton, deceased (signed by Walter Denny but undated). James Gillespie, husband of Jane (Denny) Fulton, acquired William Fulton's land. James Gillespie also acquired Walter Denny's land who is identified as Gillespie's father-in-law by surveyor John Churchman (Joseph Swift survey, 1789). What does this mean? Jane (Denny) Fulton, widow of William Fulton of Drumore Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, married (2) James Gillespie at the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Why did they marry at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia? Why not marry at any one of the nearby Presbyterian Churches? Chesnut Level, Pequa, Middle Octorora, Little Britain, Nottingham, Donegal, etc., etc.) Why Rev. Jedediah Andrews? Did the marriage actually occur in Philadelphia, or did Andrews perform this marriage at some other location, the Abington Presbyterian Church near the Manor of Moreland, for example? What about Mary Smith? Please, that's another topic. * * * * * Marriage #3: Joseph Caldwell m Mary Pos/Pas? (1743) On 26 January 1743, Joseph Caldwell married Mary Pos/Pas? [difficult to read] at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. This marriage caught my attention because it may be the same couple identified in the ancestral chart of James William Fulton (1822-1893) prepared by cheerful contributor, Dave "June Bug" Van Doren of Ohio. What? James William Fulton (1822-1893) is the great-grandson of Robert Fulton of Hilltown Twp, Bucks Co, PA, who purchased land in 1775 at Loudoun Co, Virginia and died there in 1798. (See "Fulton + Wynkoop" (Pt22)) In case you have not yet memorized the Robert Fulton family of Loudoun County, Virginia: 1.Robert Fulton d 1798 at Loudoun Co, VA 2. Robert Fulton [Jr] d 1841 at Loudoun Co, VA 3. David Powell Fulton (1797-1865) m Jane E. Carr 4. James William Fulton Jane E. Carr is the great-granddaughter of Joseph and Mary (Poak) Caldwell. From Dave Van Doren's research: 1. Joseph Caldwell m Mary Poak 2. Rachel Caldwell (1744-??) m Peter Carr (1740-1812) 3. William Carr (1771-1855) m Margaret Wren (1773-1809) 4. Jane E. Carr (1805-1889) m David Powell Fulton Could Joseph Caldwell and "Mary Poak" be the same couple who married 26 January 1743 at the First Presbyterian Church? The bride's surname is ambiguous. All I can make out is Mary "Pos" or "Pas". The timing, 1743, is right. Joseph Caldwell marries Mary P[?] in January 1743 and they could easily be the parents of Rachel Caldwell born 1744. The name "Peter Carr" appears in the index of the Wills of Loudoun County. Did the Fultons and Carrs come to Loudoun County together? * * * * * The First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia and Rev. Jedediah Andrews are common denominators for these four couples. Is there some other relationship? (1) Lettice Fulton and John Caldwell (2) William Fulton and Jane Denny (3) Jane (Denny) Fulton and James Gillespie (4) Joseph Caldwell and Mary Pas/Pos or Poak ------------- Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    1. Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 22)
    2. Patrice Fulton Stark
    3. Yes, here is even more information about the Fulton and Wynkoop family connections... In our last episode (Pt 21), we toured Philadelphia and marveled at the lovely Christ Church and tried to imagine the Fulton marriages that took place there in August and October 1755. Robert Fulton m Eleanor Wynkoop (20 Aug 1755) David Fulton m Elizabeth Yerkes (15 Oct 1755) Roberta Hirth shared her contribution, excerpts from the 1769 tax lists of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. I summarized two separate David Fulton households, David of Cheltenham (d 1757), and David who married the widow Wynkoop (1762). At that point, I called it good, put my head down, and fell asleep for two weeks. While I was sleeping, many of you were busily hunting Fultons at your local research library. Thank you all! Here's some absolutely new Fulton information for anyone that has a Wynkoop in their Fulton family tree. * * * * * Robert Fulton, d 1798, at Loudoun County, Virginia Question: Is he the man who married Eleanor Wynkoop in 1755? Correspondents Carolyn Proctor, Donna Price, and Donna's friend Susan Wetzl, found additional clues regarding this Robert Fulton who has at least one grandson carrying the Wynkoop name, Elisha Wynkoop Fulton, b 1793. Susan discovered a reference to a Loudoun County deed recorded 18 April 1775 between the Oxley family and "Robert Fulton, yeoman of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Hilltown Township." That's new! Earlier, Carolyn found that Robert Fulton witnessed the Will of Henry Oxley of Loudoun Co, VA, on 6 February 1776, and Oxley's Will was proved in Court on 13 October 1777 by "R. F. Fulton", Brittain Oxley and Ann Oxley. Things are really coming together! I've asked for more information. If anyone is game to join the Fulton hunt, be sure to obtain as many details as possible especially the Deed Book number, page number, and all names mentioned. A photocopy of the actual reference, if possible, is really helpful. Who was Henry Oxley of Loudoun County? What was his relationship to Robert Fulton of Bucks County, Pennsylvania? Was Robert Fulton simply a land buyer or is there an undiscovered family connection? Does this information affect our primary question? Could Robert Fulton "of Bucks County" (prior to 1775) be the same Robert Fulton who married Eleanor Wynkoop in 1755 at Philadelphia? I did not foresee the Bucks County connection but it is consistent with the known family of Garret Wynkoop born at Kingston, NY, who was an elder at the Abington Church in the Manor of Moreland (1728) and who moved to Bucks County (1730) and was elected elder at the Neshaminy Church. This Fulton-Wynkoop research will continue. * * * * * David Fulton of Shepardstown, Berkeley County, Virginia Question? What became of David Fulton who married Elizabeth Yerkes in 1755? Susan Wetzl also identified an excellent candidate for this David Fulton. We know that Elizabeth Yerkes was the daughter of Anthony Yerkes of the Manor of Moreland. We also know that a David Fulton paid taxes at the Manor of Moreland in 1769 and was a member of Josiah Hart's militia unit during the Revolution. Susan submits that there is a Will of a David Fulton, recorded 1795 at Berkeley Co, Virginia (present West Virginia), with David Fulton Jr. and Anthony Fulton, named administrators! This Fulton + Yerkes research will continue under the heading "Fulton + Yerkes." * * * * * I found a couple of goodies, too. But that's another story. Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. I was searching the PA Archives for more information on my Hugh Fulton (1759-1832) and his connection to a John Fulton of Bedford Co. Pa. when I came upon the following, that I thought might be of interest to the Fulton/Criner researchers. PA Archives 3rd Series - Vol 22 Taxables Bedford Co. Pa. 1773 Hempfeld Twp. John Fulton Tax 1.0 the line directly above him was Philip Criner ( I had never heard of a Bedford Co. connection before on these two) The line directly below was Manus Galaher. I found the previous information on this connection interesting with the reference to John having a brother James. It appears that my Hugh Fulton who was first found in Bedford Co. Quemahoning Twp in 1789, then in 1790 he moved to Milford Twp. which later became Somerset Co.had a brother James who was born approx 1774 and removed from the Somerset area in 1815. Also that Hugh sold to James Fulton a horse, wagon, etc. that had belonged to a John Fulton. If any of this clicks with the Fulton/Criner researchers, please let me know. Ann Irwin

    3. Hello, Last June I was in SLC and looked at the book, Ayshire, The Story of the County by John Stawhorn, Ayrshire Archaeological & Natural History Society 1975. FHL 941.42 H25j p 113 - Steam navigation had been pioneered in Scotland and among its progenitors was James Taylor who was born in Leadhill in 1758 & spent the latter years of his life from 1770 til 1825 as a mining engineer in Cummoch. The idea was taken to America by ROBERT FULTON himself of Ayrshire farming stock and developed here by Henry Bell whose Comet in 1812 began regular service on the Clyde. In the Ayrshire areas of Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs and Fenwick I did not find any Fultons in the marriages or births which would lead me to think of Robert Fulton's family. If they were from Ayrshire, it was some other area. Irene Fulton

    3. Are we having fun, yet? I find it amazing that this Fulton + Wynkoop puzzle has presented us with three separate Davids Fulton who died between 1757 and 1770. Only one thing is for sure, they're not brothers! (1) David Fulton of Cheltenham, Philadelphia Co, PA, died 1757. (2) David Fulton of ???, Philadelphia Co, PA, died bet 1762-1769. (3) David Fulton of Ulster Co, New York, died 1770. Here's some additional information I've found regarding the two David Fultons of Philadelphia County, PA ... * * * * * (1) David Fulton of Cheltenham, Philadelphia Co, PA, d 1757 This David Fulton acquired land at Cheltenham as early as 1730. On 11 Dec 1733, James Fulton, son of David Fulton, was baptized at the Abington Presbyterian Church. David Fulton appears on the 1734 Cheltenham tax list. The Will of David Fulton, yeoman, of Cheltenham is recorded at Philadelphia Co, PA, in 1757. (Can anyone locate the full text of this will?) "Abstract of Wills of Philadelphia Co, PA", Vol. V 3/1912 p 200, submitted to our Fulton list back in 1997 by our very own Fulton sleuth, Dorothy K. Fulton of Arkansas. "David Fulton of Cheltenham Twp, Phil. David Fulton-----(sister) Fulton------(brother) Fulton m Judith m (unknown) Greer m (unknown) | | | (dau) Fulton (nephew) Thomas Greer (nephew) Joseph Fulton m bef 1757 alive in 1757 alive in 1757 Abel Morgan Rev. Abel Morgan was an early minister of the Baptist Church. In 1712, Abel Morgan of the Pennypack Baptist Church founded the Montgomery Baptist Church. Could this possibly be the same man? Or, is David's son-in-law, the son of Rev. Abel Morgan? While we're at it, who is Enoch Morgan? Baptists? Yes, there was a strong Baptist community in Philadelphia County and Bucks County -- closely associated with the Welsh who had settled in the area. Welsh? Welsh Fultons? Just the other day, Tom Fulton of New York was explaining how he is a descendant of Welsh Fultons ... and I didn't believe him! Who is this David Fulton? Is he the father of the James Fulton baptized in 1733 at the Abington Church? Is this child, James Fulton, the same James who appears on the 1769 tax list for the Manor of Moreland? Are there other children of this man? Who is Judith? Oh, so many questions! * * * * * (2) David Fulton of ???, Philadelphia Co, PA, d bet 1762-1769 This David Fulton married on 30 March 1762, Helena (Van de Grift) Wynkoop, widow of Cornelius Wynkoop (1700-1754). She was 50-60 years old at the time of this marriage and I suspect that David was approximately the same age. This David Fulton cannot possibly be David Fulton of Cheltenham -- he died 5 years earlier. Cornelius Wynkoop was a long-time member of the Abington Presbyterian Church and he and his widow "Helena Fulton" are buried there. Cornelius, baptized in 1701 at the "Dutch Church" in Kingston, NY, came with his father Gerret Wynkoop to the Manor of Moreland before 1720. Gerret Wynkoop was an elder of the Abington Presbyterian church in 1728. Cornelius and Philip Wynkoop, sons of Gerret Wynkoop, lived their entire lives at the Manor of Moreland. Their father, Gerret, purchased land in Northampton, Bucks County, around 1730 and settled there. He then became an elder in the "Low Dutch" church at Neshaminy. In 1800, this Bucks County land was owned by descendants of Gerret's sons, Gerret and Nathaniel Wynkoop. I suspect that this David Fulton is the father of Robert Fulton who in 1755 married Eleanor "Nelle" Wynkoop, daughter of widow Helena (Van de Grift) Wynkoop. However, if the Wynkoops were such avid members of the Abington Church, why was this marriage held at the Christ Church in Philadelphia? Well, a few years earlier, on 17 Sept 1748, Elizabeth Fulton married William Stanley at the Christ Church in Philadelphia. Take a look at this church! http://www.ushistory.org/tour/_christc.html Why wouldn't you get married here? More important, who COULD get married here? (Imagine what you had to pay for the reception!) Elizabeth Fulton gets married here, Robert Fulton gets married here, and don't forget, a David Fulton marries Elizabeth Yerkes here 15 Oct 1755. OK -- we've got three Fultons married in this church: Elizabeth Fulton m William Standley/Stanley, 1748 Robert Fulton m Eleanor "Nelle" Wynkoop, 1755 David Fulton m Elizabeth Yerkes, 1755 Where did David Fulton, Senior, live? In the Manor of Moreland? Or, in Philadelphia? Or, in Lower Dublin Township? (Recall that we identified land of a David Fulton adjacent to land of Thomas Powell, deceased, 1753.) This David Fulton died after March 1762 and before the tax man prepared the 1769 tax list. A man with these connections should have a very interesting estate settlement. But where? * * * * * Hope you enjoy your "virtual tour" of Philadelphia! Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado

    3. Folks, Enclosed below are listings that show the FULTON entries in the 1790 Chester Co, PA federal census from an online source. This may be of interest to Lori who posted a query about Butler Co, PA as follows: Subject: James Fulton and Hugh Lemon Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 22:31:40 EST From: BLLHN@aol.com >> Does anyone have the lines of James Fulton of Middlesex twp., PA? >> Looking for a Hugh Lemon, a Gray or Davis families in the family >> line of James. Notice in the census in New London Township, the entries for FULTON, LEMMON, DAVIS, no GRAY. A cluster of three out of the four surnames. Although Davis is a common name, Lemmon is not. I draw no conclusion - just wanted to point out an observation of a Fulton entry in the context of others in that township. ********************************************************************** Census: 1790 Head of Household Census Index, A-L Twps: Chester County, PA Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Robin L. 3. Continuing ... you know the rest. NEW INFORMATION!! Tombstone Records of the Abington Presbyterian Church (1938) "Cornelius Wynkoop, d 26 Oct 1754, age 54" "Helena Fulton, relict of Cornelius Wynkoop" Cornelius Wynkoop, 1700-1754, married Helena Van de Grift. Cornelius died in 1754 and the following August, 1755, his daughter Eleanor "Nelle" Wynkoop married Robert Fulton at the beautiful Christ Church in Philadelphia. The bride's mother, widow Helena Wynkoop was there, and several years later on 30 March 1762 at the Abington Presbyterian Church, widow Helena (Van de Grift) Wynkoop married David Fulton. This explains "Helena Fulton" who paid taxes at the Manor of Moreland in 1769. She's a widow again. Also found on page 90 of the 1769 tax list is John Winecope, son of Cornelius and Helena (Van de Grift) Wynkoop. In 1787, John's son, Cornelius (of course) married Margaret "whose mother was a Yerkes." Wow! That has to be Margaret, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Yerkes) Fulton who married 1755 at Christ Church. This new information proves that the Richard Wynkoop summary (3rd Edition) contains at least one error. Wynkoop concluded that Helena was the daughter of Cornelius Wynkoop rather than his widow. 3. Continuing ... Bean, Theodore W. “History of Montgomery Co, Pennsylvania” (Philadelphia: Everts & Peck, 1884). Chapter XXXIX: Abington Township - Part I: “The congregation of the Presbyterian Church was originally formed by the Rev. Malachi Jones in 1714, tombstones in the graveyard dating back to 1728. P 686 ABINGTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The Rev. Malachi Jones, a native of Wales, where he had received his education and ordination in September, 1714, made application to the Presbytery of Philadelphia, which then numbered only eleven ministers, and by whom he was received in fellowship. In the aforesaid year the organization here of the congregation was accomplished, Benjamin Jones, Abednego Thomas, Stoffel Van Sand and Joseph Breden being chosen elders, besides sixty-five additional members. At this early date the Presbytery had been only formed about eight years. Half an acre of ground having been secured, for which a deed was given August 15, 1719, a log church was very probably soon after erected, the first house of worship possessed by the denomination within the present limits of Montgomery County. It stood within the graveyard at the intersection of the Old York and Susquehanna Street roads until 1793. The elders of the church in 1728 were Abednego Thomas Joseph Breden Benjamin Jones Garret Wynkoop Charles Hasse Joseph Charlesworth, deacons. Mr. Jones continued his labors here with apparent success for fifteen years, or until his death, which took place March 26, 1729, he being seventy-eight years old. With only one exception, his tombstone is the oldest here containing an inscription, and it is mentioned thereon that "He, was the first Minister in This Place." >From the death of Mr. Jones the charge remained vacant until December, 1731, when Rev. Richard Treat was ordained a minister and duly installed. During his ministry the Rev. George Whitefield came hither Thursday, April 17, 1740, and in his journal states that he "Rode last night after a sermon about eight miles. Lay at a Friend's house, and preached this morning to, near three thousand people at Abington, a district under the care of Mr. Treat, a Presbyterian minister, to whom God has been pleased lately to shew mercy. When I had done I took a little refreshment, baptized a child and hastened to Philadelphia." Concerning Mr. Whitefield here the late Rev. Robert Steel relates the following reminiscence: "An old Revolutionary soldier, Mr. Martin, has told me in my youthful days that he was accustomed to take an early breakfast and walk from Southwark to Abington, full twelve miles, to hear Mr. Whitefield preach. He said the house would be full and the graveyard would be filled." The Rev. David Brainerd, the missionary among the Indians at the forks of the Delaware, occasionally preached here and assisted at communions, and also Rev. Charles Beatty, of Neshaminy, one of the founders of the Hatboro' Library in 1755. Mr. Treat continued in the charge the long period of forty-seven years, and also died and was buried here in November, 1778, in his seventy-first year. The pulpit was now supplied by various ministers, among these Dr. McWhorter and Rev. William Mackey Tennent, who was chosen pastor in 1781. He was the son of Rev. Charles Tennent, the youngest of four brothers, all ministers in the church, and grandson of Rev. William Tennent, the founder of the famous "log college" in Bucks County. In this connection Dr. Tennent gave a portion of his time to the small congregations at Norriton and Providence, preaching there about every third Sabbath. The Abington congregation was incorporated by what is termed a private act of Assembly passed February 22, 1785. The original church having now become too small for the wants of the congregation, and needing repairs, a new stone structure was commenced in the spring of 1793, nearly opposite, on the west side of the York road. This was sufficiently completed to be occupied for worship in the following October. In 1798, Isaac Boileau, as the only remaining trustee, conveyed to the use of the church the adjoining farm, given by Simon Thomas and wife, containing one hundred acres. Dr. Tennent died in December, 1810, and his remains also repose in the old graveyard. He was a distinguished member of the church; in 1797 moderator of the General Assembly and one of the trustees of Princeton College. A vacancy now remained in the church for nearly two years, when the Rev. William Dunlap was chosen pastor, who assumed the charge July 2, 1812. He was the son of Rev. James Dunlap, president of Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, and had been ordained to the ministry in 1809, when he was sent on a missionary tour to Canada. He there contracted a severe cold, which terminated in consumption, from which he died in December, 1818, at the early age of thirty-six years. The Rev. Robert Steel received the charge November 9, 1819, to continue in this pastorate for the long period of nearly forty-three years. As the church was again becoming too small, the congregation resolved, at a meeting held March 12, 1833, to enlarge the same, which was done in the following summer, at a cost of nearly nineteen hundred dollars. While this improvement was proceeding worship was held in a neighboring grove. Dr. Steel, on Thanksgiving day, 1855, preached a sermon before his congregation from the text "Hitherto hath the Lord helped us" (1 Sam.7-12), wherein he stated that "since I have commenced my labors here there have been added to the membership of this church 359 persons. I have baptized 280, from infancy to hoary hairs, united in wedlock 256 couples and detained from the sanctuary by sickness but two Sabbaths in all that time." This was subsequently published in the "Presbyterian Magazine" (for February, 1856, vol. vi. pp. 80-87), with a historical account of the church, its author at the time presented the writer with a copy, and which appears since to have been made extensive use of without acknowledgment. With the exception of two acres still retained, the farm given by Mr. Thomas was sold in 1856, and brought $18,872.50. A tract of thirteen acres to the rear of the church and fronting on the Susquehanna Street road was subsequently purchased. Dr. Steel, like a faithful sentinel, remained at his post to the last, where he died September 2,1862, in his sixty-ninth year. One interesting fact remains now to be noticed in connection with the history of this church: that from its first organization for the long period of one hundred and forty-eight years only five ministers had served it, and who in all of that time lived and died here in their several charges and lie buried in its ancient graveyard, indicating a degree of faithfulness on the part of the pastors and harmony in the congregation that is creditable to both as a noteworthy example. p687 The Rev. John Linn Withrow was installed pastor in May, 1863, and remained until November, 1868, when he received the charge of the Arch Street Church, Philadelphia. He was succeeded by Rev. Samuel T. Lowrie in May, 1869, who left in July, 1874, to accept a professorship in the Theological Seminary at Allegheny. In his farewell sermon to the congregation he stated that in liberality this church ranked the fourth or fifth in the Presbytery; that in this year twelve hundred and twenty dollars had been given to benevolent purposes outside of its own operations; and that its three Sabbath-schools and two hundred and fifty scholars in 1869 had increased to four, with four hundred and fifty pupils and thirty-nine teachers. The Rev. L. W. Eckard, the present pastor, was installed May 25, 1875. Abington has been the parent of Huntingdon Valley Presbyterian Church, built in 1860; of Grace Church, at Jenkintown; and of Carmel Chapel, at Edge Hill village. The membership of this congregation in September, 1884, was two hundred and fifteen, with two hundred and fifty pupils in the Sabbath-school. The present handsome brown sandstone structure was erected in the place of the former church in 1863. It is of one story, with stained-glass windows, the main part being about forty by sixty-six and one-half feet, with a rear addition, making the total length one hundred and eighteen feet. The tower and spire is also built of dressed stone and is one hundred and eighty feet in height, and from its elevated position forms a conspicuous landmark for miles around. The graveyard has been enlarged again and again, and now contains about one and a half acres, the whole inclosed with a substantial stone wall. As it has been undoubtedly used now as a place of interment for more than one hundred and sixty years, it may be well supposed that being in such a populous section, there must be many buried here. The earliest stone containing an inscription bears the date of 1728. Notice that spelling varies such as Fulton, Fullton, Winecoop. Often using phonetics helps to assess if the surname with different spellings is really the same. By comparing some of the groups of names on this taxlist with groups of surnames in Loudon, Co, VA, perhaps we can more clearly identify a group migration of a cluster of families or a chain migration of families that filtered down over a period of time from PA to VA. ****************************************************************** >From the Bulletin of the Historical Society of Montgomery County Pennsylvania, Vol III, Oct 1941-April 1943, Norristown, PA, available at LDS Salt Lake City 974.812 B26 V.3, on page 268: "...the manor of Moreland, and named for its first provate landowner, Dr. Nicholas More, who patented the greater part of it on August 7, 1684 (Philadelphia Exemplification Record vol 2, pages 13-14). Nicholas was a London physician of independent means, who brought his family to America in the fall of 1682. An ambitious and forceful man, he had a brief but meteoric career in the Provincial Assembly and Court, and took an active part in the development of vacant lands. As President of the Free Society of Traders, he obtained a grant of 20,000 acres from the Proprietor; his ambition to become a great landowner in his own right was satisfied by the purchase of the Manor of Moreland, which he hoped to develop after the British feudal pattern, where the Lord of the manor owned all the land and improvements, and regulated the daily life of his tenants through a manorial court, over which he presided. Development began in the Somerton-Bustleton vicinity almost immediately, but was halted by his death two or three years later.[2]" [2] "Two plantations were laid out, a mile or two apart. Each had its appropriate farm buildings, and on the tract near Somerton, later owned by the Comly family, a "mannor house" was begun, but was apparently left unfinished. This was not Dr. More's "Green Spring Plantation," as is generally believed. "Green Spring" was an estate of 280 acres in the Northern Liberties (Pd E 7, vol 8, 360), where Nicholas lived and was buried." ****************************************************************** Roberta R.
