    1. re:Hays & Fulton lineages...concl...
    2. Sue Wilson
    3. I believe that takes care of the Fultons, as far as direct lineage to James and Agnes Thompson, and if you kept the first print of Pt 1 of the lineage, you have the decendents that I have noted, of John and Jannet (unknown)Fulton, and you have the lineage of John, and James' sister Agnes who married Philip Craner/Criner. As well as the Clendenin lineage that connects to the Fulton lines. Part 2, is the lineage of James B. Fulton, and Jane Hays, Part 3, is the lineage of John Fulton, and Ann Hays Part 4, is the Hays line and the Fultons connected to it. The information used in these notes, came from: 1) Merrie Olde Middlesex, by Caroljo Forsythe Lee, pub. in Valencia, in Butler county, Pa, in 1976 This book has writeups on the Hays, Fulton, and Brown lines, as well as others. And also included outlines of the lines, which has proved most helpful. 2) Researchers who haved shared information from their research: Jim McCarrier, who is connected to the Hays line through Robert Trimble, soninlaw of William McCamish Hays. email: jdm@key-net.net Lori, who is researching the Clendenin line. email: BLLHN@aol.com Sally, who is researching the Craden/Criden line. email: JSWARIES@aol.com These two researchers, have proved very valueable to my research of this line. Lori provided me with a copy of SAR papers on Jame Clendenin, as well as info on John Fulton, who was married to Jannet unknown. Between the info they both provided I was able to put John and James together as brothers, and possibly having a sister named Agnes. Then from an email I received yesterday, pointing out a past email to this list, in 1997, I was able to conclude that the info that Lori and Sally had, regarding these two lines, was infact about the line of Fultons, that I am dealing with. That we are all 3 connected to the same Fulton line. 3) The LDS records I have are copies from the Ancestral Files, that our library has on cd. The file also had a listing for George and Sarah McCamish Hays, but no other information. Thanks for your time, and help! Sue Wilson vwilson@feist.com wichita, ks

    3. Pt. 4... Now to tie up some loose ends.... Remembering the marriages of George Hays and James Clendenin, to McCamish sisters, Sarah and Jane; there is another known sister, named Mary McCamish, who married a William Brown, II. William being the son of "Billy" Brown, from Scotland. William was the second son of that line. And Billy was married to a Christiana Thompson. They had 5 children, all born in Scotland, all which came to America with them. Billy is said to have died in 1800, in Brownsville, Washington co., Pa. Of the McCamish's, they were the daughters of a John McCamish, believed to be from Ireland. He and a son, died in Philadelphia. The mother, name unknown, and the daughters, joined a caravan, which headed westward. Among the familys in that caravan, are believed to have been the Browns, the McCaslins, and Harbisons. It was while she traveled with the caravan, that George Hays, met Sarah, and the two married. She remained with George as the caravan went further west. It is believed that after the families reached Butler county, and George and Sarah, moved to Butler county, that the mother of the McCamish sisters, lived out her days with the Hays families. But I have yet, to get hold of any legable census records, for Butler county, to check for others living with the families. I think that pretty much covers what I have found on this Fulton line, and its connecting lines, thus far. Oh, except that is mention in the middlesex info, that James, son of James, and husband of Jane Hays, may have been an undertaker at one time. But nothing has been proven, that I have found yet. Hope I havent bored you! *S* If anyone else, knowns anything else about any of these lines, please let me know. Lineages will follow.... Sue Wilson vwilson@feist.com Wichita, Ks

    3. Pt. 3... from the information on the history of Middlesex, there apparently is or was a house, called the Colonial House, which was built by the Fulton line, which is an L shaped house. This house, is said to have been built, on the land that was originally squatted on by George Hays. this land was warrented to Benjamin Shaum in 1793. Shaum sold the land to Stephen Lowrey, in 1808 and in 1821 his daughter Sarah Collins inherited it. She sold it, to Daniel W. Beary, husband of Nancy Hays, sister of Jane and Ann Hays, and daughter of George Hays. this transfer took place in 1857, and then the land went to John Nelson Fulton, son of John Fulton and Ann Hays. from a researcher of this same Fulton line, I was made aware that John, brother of James who married Agnes Thompson, was possibly married to a Jannet unknown. Now, remembering that George Hays, was in the rev., which gave him eligability for filing for pension, he ran into a snaffoo: George had served as a Capt, at one point, but the military records did not reflect this. George had to obtain affidavits signed by those who served with him, to prove himself. One affidavit obtained was by James Clendenin. James Clendenin, was married to a Jane McCamish. Jane being the sister of Sarah McCamish, wife of George Hays. James Clendenin, and Jane had 8 children. One of which was William John Clendenin, b. abt 1790, died in Butler co., bet. 1860/70. William married Mary Jane (Polly) Fulton, daughter of James and Agnes Thompson Fulton. William and Mary Jane Fulton/Clendenin, had 7 children, 2 of which married Boones, and one who married an Alexander M. Fulton (lineage unknown). William's brother John Clendenin, was married to Margaret Craner/Criner. This couple had a son who married a Boone, also. Margaret Craner/Criner, was the daughter of Agnes Fulton and Philip Craner/Criner. And from the information sent to me, in response to my quiry to the Fulton mail list, I can only assume at this point that this Agnes was the sister of James Fulton, who was married to Agnes Thompson, and John Fulton who was married to Jannet unknown. Now of this union between Philip and Agnes Fulton Craner/Criner, there are 4 children, all daughters, 2 of which married mcKinnis boys. These children being offspring of Charles McKinnis and Rachal Carr. cont....... Sue Wilson vwilson@feist.com Wichita, Ks

Part 2: Note: to anyone interested in this line, pay attention to the names of the spouses, because all that are mentioned here, interconnect in these lines. back to the records from LHS, I was not able to locate any info on possible parents for James Fulton, or Agnes Thompson, but I did find a listing of the children of James B. Fulton and Jane Hays, which I had not found in the information listed on the history of Middlesex twp. But the info from the history of Middlesex, did list the children of John Fulton and Ann Hays. Of the information on James Fulton and Jane Hays, from LHS, I found 9 children born, all born in Westmoreland county. This is where I started taking an interest in the Fulton line. Because, last year, when I was still searching for the Pa connection to my Hays line, I had done some extensive researching in Westmoreland county information. See the Hays line I was looking for, included a Lewis Hays, who was my gr.gr.gr. grandfather. And Westmoreland had several Lewis Hays's in its census records, in the early 1800's. Well, I found no connection to my Lewis Hays, who turned out to be the grandson of George. Of the children of John and Ann Fulton, there were 4 children listed. In the info written on the Fulton line, in the history of Middlesex, I learned, that James, husband of Agnes Thompson, was said to have been in that township, as early as 1793.And with his wife and at least 6 children by 1800. This James is said to have been an industrious sort, apparently spending many hours as an inventor of farm machinery, but never completeing anything worthwhile.According to that same information , this James, died in 1823, apparently suffering an epileptic fit, which he is said to have been prone to. It is uncertain, but supposed that this same James, may have been a Justice of the Peace, at one time. And may have been the same James who is noted, as posting bail regularly between 1800 and 1815, in Middlesex twp., court cases. Now, to backtrack for just a moment, James and Agnes Thompson Fulton, according to what I found through LHS, were married March 8, 1782, in Bakerstown, Pa. And according to the information I have on this line, from the history of Middlesex, James(the elder), and his brother John, first emigrated to Sewickley twp, in Westmoreland co., This being an event that followed John's brief settlement in Lancaster co..According to the same notes, John and James, both being hunters, and fearful of the games, being driven away, by new settlers to that area, moved to an area, north of Bakerstown. Later, James is said to have possibly returned to Westmoreland county. This same information speculates that James is buried at in the Fulton family Plot, in Deer Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery. But as far as I know, not proven. to be cont..... Sue Wilson vwilson@feist.com Wichita, Ks

    3. hi again, first let me say Thanks to all who responded to my post inquiring about the lines of James and Agnes Thompson Fulton. Everyone was very helpful. I have since been asked to post alittle regarding these lines for the list. I have just begun my research on this Fulton line, as I just recently found out about the whereabouts of the Hays line, as it is, in Pa. My ancestor, George Hays, supposedly born in Md, in 1753, came to Pa by 1776, and was located at Tuscarora Valley, in 1781, when he married Sarah McCamish. George was a soldier in the Revolution, and I have papers from the DAR. From these records, I learned that George and Sarah, lived in Cumberland county, at the time of the Rev. and later migrated to Middlesex, Butler county, Pa by 1793, where George is listed as an founding Settler. In these records, 9 children are mentioned. One being Ann (Anis) Fulton, no birth date. And no mention of her spouses name. Though the help of other researchers who are connected to the line of George and Sarah, I soon learned that George and Sarah had several children who were said to have married into the Fulton line. From information written about the history of Middlesex twp, I soon learned that Ann did indeed marry a Fulton, namely a John Fulton, b. 1787, and that Jane Hays, sister of Ann, married a James Fulton, b. 1795, brother of John. And that these two Fulton brothers were said to be 2 of 9 children born to a James (1763 - 1823)(Ireland) m. Agnes Thompson (1762 - ?). This James, also having a brother named John. but I had no info on this John, except his name. >From records of the LHS, I found a listing for James and Agnes Thompson, which gave their birth place as Westmoreland, Pa, for both of them. And which listed all but one of their children, being born in Westmoreland county. The one not mentioned as being born in Westmoreland, was a daughter named Agnes, b. Aug 25, 1801. She is said to have been born in Allegheny county. But is not the youngest, nor the oldest child in this line. continuation upcoming... an outline of how the lines mentioned fit together, will also follow... Sue Wilson vwilson@feist.com Wichita, Ks

    3. Dear Sue, The proximity of several Fultons in the area of the Fulton branch you are researching in Westmoreland Co is very confusing. Would you please share on the discussion list more about what you and your fellow researches know about Hays, Fulton, Criner/Craner families. They lived in close proximity to the Abraham Fulton and Margaret Guthrie lines and I believe to the widow Agnes line ( all of whom came from Northern Ireland near Dunboe/Articlave). There is a strong possibility your line is related to these two lines. Could you give us a brief descendancy chart that shows how your James Fulton is connected to the Hays in Butler Co. Is your Hays family related to the Hays family in VA ? Did James Fulton's children live in Butler Co - if so what township ? ROOTSWEB has now provided on menu-driven interface to search the archives of the discussion lists. It can be reached at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl If you use this archives faciity, you can find out a lot about the other Fulton lines who lived near your James Fulton. You will also see the references to the Hays family in VA. I see in the archives the 1830 census showing some Fultons in Butler Co. Were any of your family lines members of the Covenanter Church ? 3. Hi, I am researching my FULTON family. Immigrated from Ireland into Ontario, Canada ca 1845. I believe they settled in Caledonia, Ontario for a short period of time before reaching Blanshard Twp in Perth Co. From there they moved to the Brussels and Walton area located near the borders of Morris, Grey, and McKillop Twp. Would love to hear from anyone researching the same. Thanks, Randy Fulton

    3. Folks, On the Chester PA discussion list a subscriber, whose e-mail is kbybay@earthlink.net, is compiling family information about members the Underground Railroad. James FULTON, Jr. and Joseph FULTON were listed on Wilbur Siebert's list of 3000 names of Underground Railroad affiliates, found at Northstar Foundation's website at: http://www.ugrr.org/research.htm This is a list of "station masters" and others involved in helping escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. I sent items from the FULTON discussion list archives about this family to the researcher. The researcher requested information about what Friends monthly meeting they may have been part of, or what other church affiliation they might have had, or where their home, farm or place of business was. Please feel free to contact the researcher directly if you have more to share than what is available from our archives. Thanks, Roberta R.
