I have in my files a newpaper clipping for a Charles Edgar Fulton of Centerville, Iowa who celebrated his 101st birthday on August 23, 1976. His father was John Fulton of Washington, PA, his mother Rebecca La Rue. John and Rebecca were the parents of three girls and two boys. Charles was married in 1908 to Grace Lily Miller, daughter of William T. and Hester Miller, Missourians then living in Moravia, Iowa. This gentleman is not from my Fulton kin, and I would very much like for someone related to him to have the clipping. Just email me at the above address and I will be happy to send it to the first person who contacts me with their snail mail address. Thanks, Edith Fulton Stone
I was in NC State Archives recently and while there made a photocopy of the will of James Fulton. I also noted that marriages bonds for James Fulton, Jr, & Elizabeth Briton; Esther Fulton and James Warren, Jane Fulton and William Warren and Sarah Fulton and Edward Thomas and Mary Fulton and Thomas Rhodes are also in Archives. I am not a descendant of James but my ancestors from Stokes Co., NC were not far from his land geographically. I do have some other secondary sources I noted and I would be glad to send a copy of the will and any info. I have if you would send me your snail mail address.

Reference: Thomas Bigley Fulton web pages on some of the Belmont Co, Ohio Fultons that is located at: http://users.1st.net/fultontb/ Select "TOC" button Select Genealogy Stuff - persons Dear Tom, I was looking over your generation charts on your web pages (I really enjoy them). You have your earliest ancestors listed as born in Co Tyrone, Ireland. Were they from the Six Mile Cross, Ireland area ? The Fulton Family Newsletter 1987 page 64-65 had information submitted by Clyde J. Fulton of Brewster, Ohio. He describes the William Fulton and Jane McLaren family from Six Mile Crosse, Ireland. He lists their three children as William, Charles, and a daughter, name unknown, who went to Austrlia and of whom all trace is lost. By the way, Sixmilecross looks to be about 20 miles south east of the Ulster American Folk park that the Fulton Reunion attendees visited in 1995. By accident we met a "Fulton" in the park during our visit. Seems our group has a knack for encounters that can only be explained by serendipity. I noticed that you had a family William Fulton b Ireland (refn 0132) and wife unknown McLaren. You list their children as William, Nancy, Robert, Isabel, Mary, Charles. What was the source of your information for that family unit ? It sounds like your William Fulton/unknown McLaren is the same as the one in the Fulton Family Newsletter. In the book the "Genealogy of the Fulton Family being Descendants of John Fulton born in Scotland 1713" by Hugh Ramsey Fulton, Lancaster,PA, publ. 1900, on pages 216-217, he includes information provided to him by James McFarland Fulton in the late 1800s on a branch of Fultons not related to Hugh Ramsey Fulton's lines. "James McFarland Fulton: Residence and post-office, 170 Arch Street, Allegheny City, Pa. Occupation, Minister. Birth-place and date of birth, Belmont County, Ohio, August 31, 1849. Attended Westminster College and Allegheny Theological Seminary. Married Mary Hay Shafer. Children, Charles Shafer Fulton, and Alexander Harper Fulton. Father's name, Charles Fulton. Mother's Maiden name, Jane Brown. Grandfather's names, Wm. Fulton. Grandmother's maiden name, Jane McClarren. Nationality, Scotch-Irish. Forefathers emigrated from Ireland, Six Mile Cross. First landed in America at Quebec. First settled at Belmont County, Ohio. Belong to United Presbyterian Church." Isn't it interesting that James McFarland Fulton's ancestors' port of entry was Canada and then they settled in Ohio. I have read that before that even though families were planning to settle in the U.S., they came through Canada - perhaps overseas passage was less expensive to those ports or water transportation in North America was easier to gain access to the mid-west. Do you have more information of the earliest origins of your Fultons ? Thanks, Roberta R. Reference: Trevor Fulton <Killultagh@aol.com> note on Fri 19 Feb 1999 on his Northern Ireland research, especially the Lisburn Fultons Dear Trevor, So glad you have successfully joined our list of over 150 Fulton researchers and have begun sharing your information. By all means, do search the Fulton discussion list archives. There is a considerable amount on the Lisburn Fultons. And it will help you make connections to those researchers studying the Lisburn lines. There is a set of Fulton Newsletters that were published in 1986-1994 (4 packages of 250 pages each). Two of those packages are already circulating in the United Kingdom. If you are interested in receiving them, just send me your snail mail address privately. There is no charge other than you pay the postage to mail them to the next recipient when you are done with the package. We call it our Round Robin Exchange and it has enabled over 50 researchers to access these materials inexpensively. Regarding the Fultons in Carnmoney Parish, Co Antrim, what religion did they follow ? It appears that the Lisburn Fultons usually followed the Episcopalian faith, whereas the Fultons around the Derry area were usually Presbyterians. If you have any leads about members of your branches migrating to other countries, please let us know. It may help researchers in Scotland, U.S, Canada, Australia, etc. make connections. Thanks, Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 Fulton web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm
Hello, Fulton Researchers, I have an interest in Thomas FULTON m. Catherine LYNCH. I would like to know who their children were if anyone has that information. Thanks very much, Marcia Cooper Giordano, OH
I am delighted that Trevor Fulton has joined the listserv, because he brings info about the fultons from Northern Ireland, hopefully from the Derry Area. Doesanyone have any info about the parents of the great patriarchs of Westmore- land Co., Pa.--Abraham Fulton and Margaret Guthrie, who came over in 1772? h.l. fulton
Dear Roberta, Thanks for your prompt response. The incorrect address came from Rootsweb, as I just accepted the a\ddress given and added "subscribe". Never mind it worked anyway. I am Trevor Fulton, and have been researching the Fultons off and on for many years. Now retired I have both more time and an internet, and am making more progress. I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and fit somewhere in the Lisburn family, part of which is described in the book "Fultons of Lisburn" by Theodore Hope, of which I expect you know. We do not appear in it, but my grandfather met Hope and was in no doubt that we were related. Unfortunately I didn't ask him how - and none of the next generation knew the details. I have an extensive database of Fultons in Ireland, and reckon that there were several separate arrivals. I have concentrated on the Lisburn family, and though I now live in the south of England, I am familiar with the geography of the Lisburn area. I have also an extensive tree of another Fulton family from the Carnmoney area, which is only about 12 or 15 miles from Lisburn but on the other side of Belfast. There appear to have been no links between the two families since the mid 18th century or perhaps earlier. I look forward to getting your information as it comes in and to browse in the archive. Once I get the feel for it I will probably switch to the digest. Trevor Fulton
Folks, Here is an update from Bernard Butcher on some more Fultons in Beith, Scotland. Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 ************************************************************************* Subject: Fultons in Beith, Scotland Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 13:45:59 EST From: Butcher731@aol.com To: elizabeth.russon@sympatico.ca CC: hirth@frontiernet.net Dear Elizabeth Russon I am in the middle of a trawl for Fultons in Beith, and it reminded me of your message. I have come up with this: Robert Fulton marr. Jean Caldwell in Beith, 7th. June, 1802. The children I have found are - James, c.111th. Jan., 1807, Robert c. 31st. March, 1805, Robert c. 29th. Jan., 1809, Isobel c. 7th. June, 1811. Isobel c. 5th. Sept., 1813, Janet c.14th. March 1819, Jean c.14th. April, 1816, William c. 11th. May, 1817. Assuming that Robert was born in Beith, which is possible but not certain as people did move around quite a lot and also men traditionally are married in their wives church, then I would have thought that there are four possible Robert birth dates. These are 1773, 1774, 1782 and 1783. You may very well be correct in you assumption that the Robert who married Isobel Montgomerie is you first Roberts father, in view of the names, in which case this was their family as far as I can tell: Ann c.9th. August, 1772, Robert c.7th. June, 1774, Andrew c. 24th. Jan 1777, Montgomery c.16th.July, 1779. Not all my dates seem to agree with yours. Mine are from the General Register House, Edinburgh - where did you get yours? Where the same first name is repeated in a family it means of course that the first child died young. However the death registers are useually much more fragmentary than those for births, so no records. I hope this is helpful. Good luck Bernard Butcher <butcher731@aol.com>

Folks, I came across some information on a FULTON - HAYS family in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co, PA. In the Fulton Family Letter 1987 page 66, it states it is quoting information from Dr. E. D. Moore's transcript written in 1931 regarding Harrison County, Ohio Fultons. Dr. Moore corresponded with Fultons studying other Fulton lines and included a chapter with his correspondence. The Fulton Family Letter quotes the following: "The writer has received a letter from Miss Maude R. Tomlinson of Ardmore, Oklahoma, asking for some information relative to her ancestry: She states that her ancestor was Elizabeth Fulton, born in Londonderry County, Ireland, in 1751, married Samuel Hays, came to America in 1798, settling first in Westmoreland County near Greensburg. In 1803 they settled in Crawford County where Samuel Hays was an Elder in the First Covenanter Church, near Adamsville. Their four children born in Ireland and who came to America with them were: Thomas born 1794; Elizabeth, who married Moses Finley; Janet, married a Mr. Campbell; and Sarah, who married Alexander Montgomery. Rock Glenn Cemetery is the family cemetery. She further states that she has understood that her great-grandfather, Thomas Hays, who moved to Wisconsin with his family in 1845, spoke of being a 2nd cousin to Robert Fulton." So now we have another item to add to our list of possible relationships to Robert FULTON of steamboat fame - don't we just love this. What I find fascinating is how specific this is - not just a cousin, but a 2nd cousin. I looked over the descendancy charts Sue Wilson recently sent to the list with the FULTON, HAYS, CRINER, CRANER links, but I do not see this family listed. Does anyone know how they fit into the bigger picture ? Based on this information, Elizabeth FULTON gave birth to Thomas at age 43 and came to America at age 47. So this was not a young family. I marvel how they had the courage to face the challenges of starting a farm in the wilderness of PA at that point in their lives. These folks must have been very hard-working people. Since Samuel HAYS was a member of the Covenanter church in Ohio, most likely his migration path followed a community of people with the same religious connection. These Covenanters stayed together. Regarding the Dr. Moore's manuscript, the LDS lists the following: (Entry listed in Family History Library Surname Catalog for Fultons p 2857-2858.) LDS US/CAN Book area 929.273 F959m Moore, E. D. (Elliott D.), b. 1864. Some leaves from the Fulton family tree / collected and compiled by E. D. Moore. -- {Boiling Springs, PA: Roy U. Clay, 1983}. -- 88, {16} leaves. Photocopy made of typescript prepared in 1931 by E.D. Moore, New Philadelphia, OH. William Fulton immigrated from Scotland to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1748, moved to Cecil County, Maryland, and served in the Revolutionary War. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, California, and elsewhere. Includes Bradstreet, Dowden, Lantz, Moore, Rowland, Wallace, and related families. Also on microfiche. Salt Lake City; Filmed by Genealogical Society of Utah, 1984. 1 microfiche: 11X15 cm. US/CAN Fiche Area 6019825 So the Dr. Moore transcript written in 1931 was photocopied and provided to the LDS by a Roy U. Clay in 1983. I have most of this transcript (missing pages 41 and 48, 82-88 and the end leaves), but I could not find the quote in the Moore material that was listed in the Fulton Family Letter regarding this Elizabeth Fulton. Folks, Here is some more information on the descendants of James and Agnes (Thompson) Fulton of Westmoreland/Butler Co, PA line that has recently been discussed. In the Fulton Family Letter 1987 page 68 is an excerpt from the History of Carroll and Harrison Counties, Ohio, Eckley & Perry, Vol. II, 1921, p. 844. "James Fulton, grandfather of Mrs. Ella Glendening, was a son of William and Mary (Moore) Fulton. William Fulton (1792-1871) and Mary Moore (1803-1882) were married in 1823. This union resulted in these children, viz: William, James, Robert, and Sarah who married John Boyd. William Fulton was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. When he first came to Ohio he located for a time in Green township and entered the southeast quarter of section 23, just north of Tippencanoe. James Fulton was born September 10, 1826, in Washington township, Harrison county, and was united in marriage to Mary Boyd, born in Freeport township, Harrison county in 1853. To this union two children were born: Eliza, born December 23, 1853, married B. H. Black; and Albert, born April 6, 1855. Soon after their marriage the entire foregoing Fulton connections moved to Illinois and located near Bloomington. Mrs. James Fulton died there in 1856 and later Mr. Fulton again married and continued to live near Bloomington until his death. William Fulton and wife also were buried at Bloomington." Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 Fulton web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm
A biographical summary of Albert Fulton of McLean County, Illinois, appears to be one descendant of James and Agnes (Thompson) Fulton of Westmoreland/Butler County, Pennsylvania. [Source: Hasbrouck, Jacob L. "History of McLean Co, Illinois, Volume II" (Topeka-Indianapolis: Historical Publishing Company, 1924), pages 1262-64, biographical summary of Albert Fulton.] Albert Fulton, b 1855 at Bloomington, McLean Co, IL, names both his father and grandfather in this summary. Both men died at Bloomington, McLean Co. IL. His grandfather died in 1871, therefore it is likely that Albert knew his grandfather personally and this is reliable information. Albert reported that his grandfather, William Fulton, was born 1792 at Westmoreland Co, PA. I suspect that the grandfather is the son of James and Agnes (Thompson) Fulton who were married in 1786 at Westmoreland Co, PA. >From Albert Fulton's summary, we learn the following: William Fulton, b 1792, d 1871 at Bloomington, McLean Co, IL. He married (1) est 1815 at Westmoreland Co, PA, Leah Thompson; married (2) 28 Oct 1823 at Harrison Co, Ohio, Mary Moore. [I find the marriage record of William Fulton to Mary Moore in Charles Hanna's "History of Harrison Co, OH". Marriage performed by Donald McIntosh, VDM.] Only child of William and Leah (Thompson) Fulton was: 1. Samuel Thompson Fulton, b 1816. [No further info.] Children of William and Mary (Moore) Fulton were: 2. William Fulton, b est 1824 [No further info.] 3. James Fulton, 1826-1892 4. Robert Fulton, 1828-1850 5. Sarah Fulton, b est 1831 [No further info.] James Fulton (#3 above), son of Wm and Mary (Moore) Fulton, b 10 Sept 1826 at Washington Twp, Harrison Co, Ohio; d 6 Sep 1892 at Bloomington, McLean Co, IL. He m ca 1853 at Harrison Co, OH, Mary Boyd. She d 1856 at McLean Co, IL, and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Bloomington. Only two children were born to James and Mary (Boyd) Fulton: 1. Eliza A. The Will of Samuel Thompson is found in Westmoreland Co, PA, Will Book 1, page 13. Samuel Thompson signed his Will on 10 Sept 1800 and the Will was proved on 23 April 1808 by John Thompson. I will keep your details to hand in case anything comes up. Best of luck Bernard - UK
P.S. I guess I had better add that Robert H. and William Fulton lived and died in Washington Co., IOWA not Pennsylvania. Norma
I can add a little bit about the descendants of James Fulton and Jane Hays. There was no evidence that they were related to Abraham Fulton and Margaret Guthrie in the Craighead book that I had on that family and donated to the local library. However, there are descendants of Abraham and Margaret in Louisa County, Iowa. They had the hotel in Columbus City during the early days here. Henry was a preacher and the family here are descended from him. James Fulton, b. May 17, 1795 in Pennsylvania, d. June 10, 1858 and Jane Hays, b. 1794 in Pennsylvania, d. 1869, of Butler Co., Pa. had nine children. According to funeral home records, Robert Hays Fulton b. 8-13-1829 in Butler Co., Pa. d. 10-26-1913, son of James and Jane (Hays) Fulton, married Margaret Fleming, dau. of James Flemng, b. in Ireland & Jane Black. b. in Ireland. She was b. 7-13-1837 in Butler Co., Pa. and died May 8, 1913. Robert came to Washington Co. with his brother William ca. 1873 and purchased 223 1/2 acres in Ceddar Twp. Robert had children James B., George b. 1860, m. 1 December 1892 to Sadie Benson; Clara Jane; Harper Allen; Emma Lucille; and Elizabeth Ann. William Fulton, carpenter, b. 8-10-1834 in Butler Co., Pa. d. 7-14-1924, son of James Fulton and Jane Hays of Butler Co., Pa. No known spouse or descendants. The Washington County History book in the Washington County Genealogical Library states the following: Robert H. Fulton, b. 1829 m. May 3, 1859 to Margaret Fleming. Their children were James B. b. 1859, m. 1888 at the age of 29; George M. b. 1850,, m. 1892 at the age of 32; Clara Jane; Harper Allen; Emma Luella, and Elizabeth Ann. >From 1859 through 1870, there are numerous land record transactions for Margaret, Robert, William, James, Ebenezer, and Joseph Fulton. No known connection that I can ascertain from the other names to William and Robert. John and James Fulton were both from Rockingham Co., Va. and my family (Hugh) were from Augusta Co., Pa. James Fulton from Butler Co. is not my Fulton family so I have not researched this any further. But these names may help fill in your family tree. Norma Jennings

That resource was: Our Family Records, A Genealogical Record of William Brown and Decendents of America, compiled by WH Taylor, Pittsburgh, Pa; Dermitt Printing co., 1905. pgs 8 and 9, were sited from this resource. thanks Sue Wilson vwilson@feist.com
