    1. Abraham Fulton/Margaret Guthrie
    2. Dear All, I saw a request for information on the above from Henry at 3R7OGJY@CMUVM.CSV.CMICH.ED8U and sent a reply but it could not be delivered. I repeat the content for Henry and anyone else interested. I am mainly interested in the Lisburn, N.Ireland Fultons but have collected assorted other items including the following from my data base:- the Abraham Fulton family lived in Articlave in the parish of Dunboe which lies about four miles west of Coleraine on the road to Londonderry near the north cost of Ireland. I got the detail from the IGI but most of the children had been entered several times at slightly diffeent dates. Where possible I have used the one labelled Dunboe as I assumed it could be from the parish register and is likely to be more reliable, but see below - the appear to have been Presbyterian. Thre family were James b.1747,Mary(Polly) b.1750, Robert b.1751,Abraham (jun) b.1753, Margaret b.1755, Henry B.1757and Joseph b.1759. James and Joseph appear to have remained in the area, James married to Sarah Cochran baptising children between 1770 and 1790, and Joseph married to Miss Irving with two children baptised around 1795. There was an Abraham son of William born 1707 who may have been the one married to Margaret Guthrie, but he did not baptise any of his known children William, which may be significant. Fultons remained in the area and there is a record of a William married to Eliza Jane Morrison about 1860. I have also found a certificate to Abraham, wife and family emigrating to America, issued by the elders of Articlave on 26th May 1772. The family consists of wife, sons James, Robert, Abraham and Joseph, daughter Mary Boyd her husband Jno. Boyd and their daughter Margaret Boyd. As the certificate was issued by "the elders" it is clear that they were Presbyterian. It raise a question about the marriages of James and Joseph - did they return to Ireland or is the IGI incorrect in putting the baptisms of their families in Articlave? I hope this is of use to Henry (sorry I seem to have lost your surname) and others researching this family. Trevor Fulton

    1. Lisburn Fulton and Ties to America - How do we prove it ?
    2. Roberta (Fulton) Hirth
    3. Folks, My question in this note is what source proves that several sons of Hugh Fulton of Derriaghy and wife Ellinor Johnston, Antrim, NI migrate to America ? In particular, how do we know that their son Robert ends up in Boston ca 1730 and that their other son James d. in 1753 in Augusta Co, VA ? So far I have not seen any primary source data cited that substantiates this theory. If you can add anything to what I have listed below, please join in the discussion. Before Trevor Fulton obtained e-mail, Hugh Casement was kind enough to share some information from Trevor on the Lisburn Fultons. It was posted in a note as follows: Subject: Lisburn area Date: Thu, 3 Apr 1997 01:39:39 -0500 From: Hugh Casement <HughCasement@CompuServe.COM> Reply-To: FULTON@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu To: "Fulton Family discussion list" <FULTON@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu> *************************************** You can look at the full contents of about a dozen of Hugh's notes Use ROOTSWEB's menu-driven interface to search the Fulton-L archives. In the MEMOIRS OF THE FULTONS OF LISBURN, compiled by Sir Theodore C. Hope, printed for private circulation, 1903, Chapter VI p 20-22 is entitled "John Fulton of Lisburn and Derriaghy or Belsize". A copy located at Belfast Linenhall Library, Belfast, Ireland, and at the New York Public Library, N.Y. It also has been microfilmed by the LDS (British Film Area 1426010 item 3). He lists some of the descendancy above, but does not make the leap across the Atlantic from this family to those in America. On page 21 Sir Hope writes, "Hugh of 'Derriaghy' seems to have been the next brother, as the Lisburn Catherdral Register gives his marriage, on 21 February 1681, to Ellinor Johnston of Derriaghy, and the births of their children, William (1683), Robert(1685), Jane(1686), James(1690), John(1692), and Thomas(1694). Hugh and his eldest son William signed the Derriaghy Vestry Book in 1711, and William in 1712 and 1715 also, being a Churchwarden in the latter year. In 1709, William baptized a son John at Derriaghy. Of Hugh's descendants we have no authentic records, but Dr. Robert Fulton has drawn out a tentative pedigree, from the Lisburn Presbyterian and the Derriaghy Church Registers, of his younger son Thomas (bap. L. R. 1694), which looks likely enough." I am aware of two compiled sources that try to make the connection between the Lisburn Fultons and Fultons in America: 1) Dr Robert Valpy Fulton's manuscript on Lisburn Fultons and connections to Fultons in Australia/New Zealand 2) The Fulton-Hayden-Warner Ancestry in America compiled by Clarence Ettienne Leonard Dr Robert Valpy Fulton's manuscript entitled "Records of the Family of FULTON especially in connection with those Branches settled in Australia", privately published 7 Sept 1894, Dunedin, New Zealand. This is the Dr. Robert Fulton that Sir Theodore Hope mentions in the paragraph quoted above. On page 5, Dr Robert Fulton states, "James Fulton the eldest son of Captain Richard Fulton was born about 1720 and having married and had issue one son is believed to have sailed for Pennsylvania a new colony just coming into prominence. This as nearly can be proved was 1752? He evidently had heard of the fact that his father had been left behind when his grandfather sailed for Jamaica in 1689, as he did precisely the same thing when he sailed - that he left his son, Richard, in the care of his own brother John Fulton of Calcutta and Lisburn, merchant. James Fulton settled in Little Britain Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania and eventually died 1770 leaving his wife and family in great poverty. He had issue by his wife Margaret and of them the second son Robert Fulton the famous American Engineer is the only one we know anything of." Dr Robert Valpy Fulton does not provide any references to original primary source material regarding James who went to America. He mentions Colden's "Life of Fulton". Based on more recent evidence, his statement of a James Fulton fathering the steamboat Robert Fulton seems incorrect. But knowing when these mistatements were published and by whom gives us a better understanding of how certain "myths" have been propagated over the years. Another source that tries to make the connection between the Lisburn Fultons and America is the book "The Fulton-Hayden-Warner Ancestry in America" compiled by Clarence Ettienne Leonard; Tobias A. Wright Printer and Publisher, New York, 1923. Copy at NYS Library at Albany - reprint available from Higginson Publishers. LDS film US/CAN 1017047 item 8. The book contains information on the descendants of Robert Fulton (son of Hugh Fulton and Elinor Johnson) and his three sons John, Robert, and Samuel who came to America about 1730 and settled in Boston, Mass. The book states Robert purchased land in 1751 on Orange Street, Boston and sold it in 1754. The Fulton chapter in this book describes the direct line of descent from Robert Fulton (migrated to Boston abt 1730) to William Edwards Fulton b. 8 Aug 1852 in Brooklyn NY. Mr. Leonard makes mention of consulting Sir Theodore Hope's book (p 40), but he lists Elinor Johnson of Denaghy, Ireland, whereas Sir Hope lists Ellinor Johnston of Derriaghy/Deriaghy. Mr Leonard lists John bapt 1709 at Diviaghy and Sir Hope lists it as Derriaghy. It appears that Mr. Leonard has taken information from Sir Hope's book and added transcription errors. He does not explain why he feels justified in connecting the Lisburn family to the Robert Fulton in Boston. As I asked at the beginning of this note, if anyone has additional information to sort out these relationships, please let us know. Thanks, Roberta R. 3. I have been in correspondence with Trevor Fulton maybe a year ago. He was very kind to send me some information via snail mail, and I have been remiss in returning the favor to him. Now that he evidently has a computer and is on the Fulton list, is there a way I can get his e-mail address so I can send him some long overdue material? I am a descendant of James Fulton, d1753, and have some information that may interest him. My information contains a lot of Norma Jennings' data that he can find at her fantastic site: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jennings/manuscript/jmfult97.htm. I owe her and her researchers a great debt for providing so much interesting information. Most of the information that I can add have to do with those who were called the Missouri Fultons. John3 (Hugh2, James1) moved to Missouri from Augusta County, Virginia. The data that I can add or at least expand on start with this John - my great, great grandfather. My great grandfather Robert Campbell Fulton participated in the early days of the silver mining in Virginia City, NV, back when Virginia City was actually a territory of Utah. There is some interesting history then, some of which Norma has documented on her web site. -- George R. Fulton gfclarinet@earthlink.net Long Beach, California

    3. You know I have always wondered about the spelling of the source of James Fulton's birth as all three spellings have been found. Deviaghy, Denaghy or Denagby. We do know it was in northern Ireland, but the exact spelling is still debatable. Perhaps someone more familliar with these areas in Ireland could enlighten us. Did the spelling change over the years Did someone misread the handwriting??? I tried to keep the spelling the same as I had found it. Norma

    2. Dear Dave, I saw your e-mail of 3 March , re the above asking for information about Divaghy, Denaghy etc. The correct answer is Derriaghy, a parish lying between Lisburn and Belfast, Northern ireland. The name is of Gaelic origin, derived from "derry" meaning an oakwood , and "aghy" or something like that , meaning field, so th eparish name means the field in the oakwood, and indeed it was located in the great forest of Ulster which disappeared around 1650 - 1700. I was brought up in Belfast and have visited the present parish church, where some of my ancestors are buried. i don't know where the other spellings came from but have often seen them, usually from American sources so I suppose that someone not familiar with the district mistranscribed the name from a manuscript sourde. The parish church was derelict for most of the 17th century and the records were kept with the records of the parish in Lisburn, also known as Blaris or Lisnagarvey. We are fortunate that the records of Lisburn and Derriaghy from its rebuilding have survived almost intact, though they are not quite complete. Can you tell me about James and Hugh? I am building up a tree of the Fultons of the Lisburn area (it is the branch from which I descend). I have a sopy of the book "Fultons of Lisburn "by Theodore Hope of which you may know. I have found that it is not complete and there are many more Fultons in the early generations. For example I have a James, born 1690, son of Hugh, born 1650. James had a son David in 1719, but then disappears from the record - could he have emigrated and be the James d.1753? Any information you have would be useful. Hope you can help. Trevor Fulton

Notes for ANDREW FULTON: Andrew died between 1816 and 1819, but for some reason, his son did not file the administrator's bond until 1835. Andrew was not an officer in the Revolution as some sources have reported. He was a private according to his Revolutionary War papers and did not become an officer until after the Revolutionary War while serving in the Augusta County militia. Marriage Notes for ANDREW FULTON and ELIZABETH HALL: Date found in Elizabeth's application for widow's pension for Andrew's service in the Revolutionary War. Buried in the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He married ELIZABETH MITCHELL September 27, 1809 in Augusta Co. Va., daughter of THOMAS MITCHEL and ELIZABETH MCCLAHAN. Notes for JAMES FULTON: Since James was 55 and his wife Elizabeth was 44 when they married, there are no children noted. James Fulton sold land to John McClure a few years before his death and Elizabeth's estate was inherited by the children of John McClure, grandchildren of her sister in 1834. James Fulton is buried in the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Augusta County, Virginia. There is no marker on his grave, but his burial is recorded in the church register which begins in 1817. Elizabeth is buried at the Old Providence Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Elizabeth Mitchell was the daughter of Thomas Mitchel and Elizabeth McClahan Moor, widow of Samuel Moor who was accidently killed in 1752. Elizabeth McClahan Moor died the 1 August 1779 in her 49th year. The family Bible of Thomas Mitchel is now owned by M. T. McClure. This Bible provides information on Elizabeth's family. Thomas Mitchel was born 23 September 1732 and died the 30 December 1806. Another Bible in the possession of Vance McClure of Greenville, Virginia gives birth, death, and marriage records of James Fulton and his wife Elizabeth Mitchell and Elizabeth's parents. Notes for ELIZABETH MITCHELL: Elizabeth's will is recorded in Book 30, page 90, dated 3 February 1842, proved 28 October 1850. Child of JAMES FULTON and ELIZABETH MITCHELL is: i. NO DESCENDANTS7 FULTON. 10. JOHN6 FULTON (HUGH5, JAMES4, HUGH3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born May 20, 1763 in Augusta Co. Va., and died January 20, 1845 in Wayne County, Missouri. Notes for JOHN FULTON: Birth, death dates and names of children obtained from: The John Fulton Bible Records Transcribed by Rose Fulton Cramer of Patterson, Missouri and made available to me by George Fulton of Los Angeles, Calif. The August County marriage records give their marriage date as January 16, 1804, but the Bible records say January 19, 1804. Presumably, the first date is the date the license was obtained. On January 16, 1804, John Fulton of Augusta County and George Reid of Rockbridge County went to Staunton and gave bond for the marriage of "John Fulton, bachelor and Jane Reid, spinster, daughter of James Reid, deceased, late of York County, Pennsylvania, the said Jane Reid, being a resident of the said County of Augusta County. " At the bottom of the bond is an affirmation by George Reid." that my sister Jane Reid who is about to get married to Mr. John Fulton of Augusta County is past the age of twenty one years, and that she usually resided in the said County of Augusta." The part at the end of this note regarding the descendants of James Fulton I will try to resend to the server in several notes. I will use the subject James Fulton d 1753 Augusta Co., Va Part I, etc. Please bear with me if I have problems getting it through. Norma, thanks again for the clarification. Jennings" <njennings@lisco.net> To: FULTON-L@rootsweb.com Unfortunately, the Gallia County History Book confuses two different Fulton families. James Fulton of Gallia County is NOT a descendant of the family that lived on Moffett's Creek and in Calfpasture. The birth, marriage, and death records of James Fulton (August 10, 1755, and died February 14, 1834) were recorded in Thomas Mitchell's Family Bible which is now owned by the McClure Family. Gallia James may be a descendant of another John and Sarah Fulton that settled in what is now Rockingham county whose son William is believed to have gone to Gallia County. (i.e. William Fulton(5) born circa 1730, probably in Pennsylvania or New England. Died 13 April 1821 Gallia Co., Ohio. He testified in Rockbridge that he taught Joseph Graham and is mentioned as a schoolteacher in 1758.) James Fulton, the oldest son of John Fulton and Mary Steele, grandson of the first James, who is named in John Fulton's will, married Betsy Mitchell and died in Augusta County, Virginia. He DID NOT GO TO GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio. He also married late in life and had no children. His estate was inherited by his wife's sister's grandchildren. The folks in Ohio are not descended from John Fulton and Mary Steele. There are no descendants here. The following is the correct and fully documented descendancy of James Fulton of Augusta County, Virginia: --------------------------- Descendants of James Fulton *************************************************************************** (Please see subsequent notes for the descendancy chart)

    3. Folks, Enclosing great information from Ann Irwin. Roberta ******************************************************************** Subject: Thomas Smith Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 20:11:09 -0600 From: "S, ANN IRWIN" <AIRWIN@prodigy.net> To: "ROBERTA FULTON HIRTH" <hirth@frontiernet.net> Dear Roberta, Haven't heard from you for a while, hope all is OK . I still am plugging - and thats what it feels like- away on my Hugh with nothing new. He can't be the son of William, son of Richard, as that Hugh is in Ross Co. Ohio.. But I have put together the Thomas Smith informaton, If you want to post some or all to your web page, its fine with me. I will be interested in your comments, and if you have any information to add: See you in October Ann THOMAS SMITH OF MARTIC TOWNSHIP LANCASTER CO. PA. The following is to provide background history on the Smith family that I believe the widow Mary Smith Fulton married into after her husband, Robert Fulton, the tailors, death. At this time there is no evidence that her second husbands family was related to her birth family, Joseph and Isabel Smith of Oxford, Twp, Chester Co. Pa. Thomas Smith was born in Martick Twp. where his father , William Smith, settled in 1726. The elder Smith owned a Grist & Saw Mill. His wifes name was Joannah. Thomas and his brother William Smith build Martick Furnace in 1753 or 54. Thomas Smith married Jane Allison on Jan 16, 1761 at St. James Church in Lancaster Pa.. She is listed in different records as Jane or Jean. She was the daughter of John Allison of Derry Twp. whose will was dated 1747. John Allison was a native of Londonderry, Ireland and emigrated in 1725 to the barrens of Derry which became Derry Twp, Lancaster Co. Pa. . This area is now Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Janes Children were listed in her brother Robert Allisons will of 1768, this will also shows she was deceased at this time. The children of Thomas & Jane(Jean)Smith were John, William, James, Robert. Nothing more is known of these children at this time. Thomas Smith was elected Sheriff of Lancaster County in 1752 and 1754. Revolutionary War records show a Thomas Smith of Lancaster Co. Pa. but cannot confirm him to be this Thomas Smith. Since it is documented that his brother William was actively involved in the war, it is quite probable that Thomas was also. According to Lancaster Deed Abstracts by Mayhill, Thomas Smith is entered as Sheriff in 1753,1754,1755. In The Middle Octorrora Church pamplet by Lancaster Historical Society, in 1763 William and Thomas Smith purchased the Green Tree Inn and surrounding land. They formed the town of Smithsborough from 19 acres of this land. They then sold the town to James Fulton who resold it to Robert Thompson in 1764. This was situated in Bart Twp. Page 2 - Thomas Smith The Lancaster Deed Abstracts lists Thomas Smith and wife Jane and William Smith and wife Dinah of Martic Twp. sold lot 24 in Smithsborough 14 April 1767. The following articles are found in the Pennsylvania Gazette: 9 July, 1767 - to be sold Martick Furnace and forge and about 4000 acres situate on branch of Pequea - apply to Thomas Smith living near the works. It must have taken a large investment to purchase property of this size. 26 June 1769 - Public Sale of Martic Furnace late property of Thomas Smith, James Wallace and James Fulton. - Which evidently indicates Smith was unable to sell the property. as this sale was advertised by the Sheriff. 7 May, 1770 Black Horse Tavern & Farm situated part in Martick and part in Strasburgh Twp. Lancaster Co. for sale - Apply to Thomas Smith in Martick Twp. Then a later notice "Public Sale" Late property of Thomas Smith siezed and taken to be sold by Sheriff - also 30th at Martick Furnace will be sold quality of casing. In The Lancaster Deed Abstracts, among the original members of the Juliana Library dated 22 oct 1763 were William Smith, Thomas Smith, and Robert Fulton. There also was a Robert Fulton associated for a short time with the Martic Furnace with Thomas Smith. It seems obvious that these Smiths and the Robert Fultons were acquainted. In the Trinity Lutheran Church records of Lancaster County is a marriage dated 5 Apr 1780 of Thomas Smith and Mary Fulton, two widowed persons. Robert Fulton inventor of the Steam Boat and son of the above Mary Fulton purchased land in Hopewell Twp, Washington Co. Pa May 8, 1786. It has been stated that this farm was for his mother, and sisters. It seems unusual that the son would purchase a farm for his mother if she had remarried, but its also seems obvious that Thomas Smith had financial problems. Other records that indicate the relationship of a second marriage and the presence of Thomas Smith in Mary Smith Fulton's life are: 28 Jan, 1786 Abraham Smith Fulton brother of Robert purchased 400 acres on Waters of Potato Garden & Monture Run, witness to this transaction were Robert Fulton(brother) and Thomas Smith. Page 3 - Thomas Smith I have copies of two letters from Robert the son to his Mother Mary dated June 14, 1790, and Jan 20, 1792. One is addressed to Mary Smith, and the other asks to be remembered to M. Smith.. None of the Tax lists, nor 1790 Census for Hopewell Township, Washington Co. Pa. (where the land was located that Robert Fulton purchased for his mother) list a Mary Fulton, but both records do show a Thomas Smith.) In the Washington Co. Will Book 1 - P 397 is the will of Thomas Smith who died in 1801 left wife Mary Smith, and appoints James Cook and Mary Smith as executors, this was signed Mar 9, 1800. (Mary's daughter Isabell married a Peyton Cook) There is no will for Mary Smith Fulton Smith, or any variation thereof. But this certainly throws a question about the accuracy of the widely accepted date of her death as 1799. Some background information on the brother who was involved with Thomas in several financial transcations: William Smith married Dinah Edwards Nov. 11, 1755. Dinah was born Nov 7, 1736. She was the daughter of John Edwards (B1708) and Sarah Davis. William also was a Sheriff of Lancaster County Pa. elected in 1758 and 1760. He and his family moved to New Holland (in Earl Twp) and he was a Justice til his decease in 1806. William was said to have taken an active part in the Revolutionary War and died in New Holland. Both the Davis and Edwards families were from Earl Township, in and near New Holland. [the majority of this information came from Egle's Notes & Queries] Ann Irwin

    3. Reference: Note dated 27 Feb 1999 from Randy Fulton <ranzac@123.net> regarding Canadian Fulton from Northern Ireland. ********************************************* ** Note from Randy Fulton to Roberta Hirth ** ********************************************* Hi, I've been taking note of the information you've been sharing on the Fulton mailing list through Rootsweb. I have been researching my Fulton line for a few years now. I have not connected with any of the Fulton lines being followed on the list. However there seem to be some similarities. If you don't mind, I'd like to pass along some info on my line on the outside chance you've run across something here or there. My fourth great-grandfather, John FULTON, was born ca 1809 in Ireland, as was his wife Sarah McDOLE. John's obit states that he was a native of Armagh, Ireland. An Irish researcher searched for info on this line, but to no avail. I'm wondering if he was from Omagh rather than Armagh. There seemed to be more families located in the Co Tyrone area. The other reality is there simply may not be records available. Their first of their known children were also born in Ireland; 1. James b: ca 1829 2. Samuel F. b: ca 1830 3. John T. b: ca 1831 4. Margaret b: ca 1838 5. Thomas b: ca 1839 6. William b: ca 1845 The next child born was Hugh. He was reportedly born ca 1849 in Blanshard Twp, Perth Co, Ontario, Canada. I believe they immigrated ca 1846. They apparently settled in Caledonia, Haldimand-Norfolk Co, SW Ontario, Canada prior to moving to Blanshard Twp. They were Presbyterian. Some of the men were members of the Orange Order. It appears as though the Fulton name is in fact Scottish. I assume there to be a connection between the Scotish & Irish Fultons. Most likely some branched out in the 1700's and settled in Northern Ireland. Have you had any luck connecting the two? I appreciate any assistance you may be able to offer. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Randy Fulton ******************************************************************************** Dear Randy, Research in Northern Ireland can be very frustrating. Here are some suggestions: 1) Have you thoroughly researched in Caledonia, Haldimand-Norfolk Co, SW Ontario, Canada where they first settled in ca. 1846 ? In other words, first exhaust all possibilities of research in the area where you know they definitely were in order to find the link to Ireland. Did you check records for the surname MCDOLE. Even though they came during the Irish famine years, they most likely were with other members of their old Irish neighborhood that settled in Canada. This may give you a lead to the townland from which the Fultons originated. 2) I do not have a township map of Ontario Canada. What are some major cities in Blanshard Twp. so I can locate it ? You said they were Presbyterian. Were there any organized relief efforts of the Canadian Presbyterians that would sponsor bringing over famine immigrants ? Do you know if they were Covenanters ? 3. Have you checked the IGI for Fulton and McDole as parents of any of the children listed in the family unit you have ? Can you find Sarah McDole (watch out for spelling variations on this name) in the IGI ? 4. Have you used the Householders Index for Ireland ? The Householders index is an index put together by the National Library in Ireland . They sorted the surnames as they appeared in Griffiths Valuation (app 1848-1864) and the Tithe Applottment (app. 1823 -1837) which were two surveys of householders done in Ireland. They are used as Census substitutes because of the destruction of the majority of Census records at assorted times and for assorted reasons. They are sorted the names by Barony and Civil Parish within each county, there is a "G" and "T" that can also appear next to each surname if the name appeared in Griffiths and if it appeared in the Tithe. There may also be a number next to the "G" as "G"4 if the name appeared 4 times in Griffiths but just a T if they were there during the Tithe time period. This has been microfilmed by the LDS and is available at their branch Family History Centers. This is a stab in the dark, but you may want to determine what overlap you can find for any Fulton and any McDole in the County of Armagh to try to narrow down your search to a townland. Since the obit stated Armagh, I would not switch to another county at this time. 5. My sister Florence (Fulton) Wolfe was using the CD Index to the Griffiths Valuation (1848-1864) to get an idea of the distribution of the FULTON surname in Ireland. These are approximate numbers, but they give you an idea of the distribution: Antrim ------ 96 Tyrone ------ 83 Down -------- 38 Londonderry - 36 Armagh ------ 21 Donegal ----- 12 Roscommon --- 6 Dublin ------ 5 Kilkenny ---- 3 Offaly/Kings- 2 Cork -------- 2 Galway ------ 1 Mayo -------- 1 6. You asked about the connection between the Fultons in Scotland and those in Northern Ireland. My 4rth-gr-grandfather wrote his memoirs dated 28 Oct 1824, one month before he died at age 85. He states the following: "I am a native of Scotland; was born in Dalkeith in Musselborough, a small village lying some to the North and East of Edinburgh, in the 13th year of the reign of George II (1739). My people had lived there since the days of the Protector Cromwell, for about a hundred years. My father was the youngest of the family. He had a half brother, Henry Fulton, who lived at Dalkeith; and in the reign of George 1st he went to Londonderry, in the the North of Ireland; married Mary Brown, lived and died in Londonderry. He left a son, Robert Fulton, a half cousin to us; and when I went to Londonderry in 1769 and inquired of Hugh Brown, a brother-in-law of my cousin, Hugh told me that his nephew Robert Fulton had married a lass in that town and sailed for Philadelphia in America, in 1763, and was now living in the Colony called after William Penn, in Lancashrie, or Lancaster Shire." King George I's reign was 1 Aug. 1714 to 11 June 1727. King George II's reign was 11 June 1727 to 25 Oct 1760. My 4rth gr-grandfather James Fulton migrated directly from Scotland, (the ship stopped at Cork Ireland) and he arrived in NYC mid-January 1783. But most of the Fulton lines that migrated to America in the 1700 thru early 1800's came from Northern Ireland and had their roots in Ayrshire, or Renfrewshire, Scotland. 7. Why were Fultons migrating to Northern Ireland ? I recommend you read the book, "The Scotch-Irish or The Scot in North Britain, North Ireland, and North America" by Charles A. Hanna, 1902, Vol 1+II, reprints form Genealogical Publishing Co. Also monitor the Scotch-Irish-L list. There were various migration movements from Scotland to Northern Ireland in the 1600 and 1700s. -A)Co. DOWN: Montgomery and Hamilton settlements in Down (starting 1605) This is important to Fultons because Hugh Montgomery was the Laird of Braidstane in Beith, Ayrshire and James Hamilton, Dunlop, Ayrshire. And they drew upon the folks in their home districts to help settle their new estates in Northern Ireland. And this part of northern Ayrshire has been heavily populated by Fultons since at least the 1200's. In Charles Hanna's book, he describes the main Irish Plantations and where the relevant people came from. For example, he goes into great detail on the founding of Antrim and Down. On pp 488-490 he lists all those known to be there in 1688 and 1681, mostly extracted from the Hamilton Estates rent rolls and also lists names from the Montgomery Manuscripts. When you read these surnames, you feel as though you are reading the surnames of settlers in colonial PA. For example, Montgomery enlisted the aid of Colonel David Boyd, of Kilmarnock, Scotland, to organize settlers from that area. -B)Co. ANTRIM: Northern half of Antrim settled by Randall Macdonnell 1603. Area around Belfast Lough, settled by Sir Arthur Chichester, particularly English from Devonshire. Fultons settled in Lisburn, south of Belfast, Co Antrim, Ireland (Sir Theodore Hope places this settlement in 1611-1614 based on oral history in his family. -C) "Great Plantation" (1610-1630): James I adopted a "plan" of colonization for the counties of Londonderry, Donegal, Tyrone, Cavan, Armagh, and Fermanagh. He divided the land in small estates of not more than 2000 acres and granted them to well-to-do "undertakers". Those who accepted the grants had to "undertake" certain conditions such as agreeing to live on the land and to populate or "plant" it with 48 English/Scottish men. Some came from England, but most came from Scotland. Londonderry was reserved for the control by the city of London merchants. The English settled in the southern parts, while the Scots occupied the North and center portions. Hanna's book contains a list of the precincts or baronies set aside for Scottish grantees, including acreages and in some cases, resellings. One of the sons of the Lord of Kilmarnock, Sir Thomas Boyd, received a grant in the county of Tyrone, precinct of Strabane and transferred it to James Hamilton before 1620. Several grants in the Co of Donegal, barony of Raphoe went to members of the Cunningham family from southern Ayrshire. Thus the Plantation period of James I encouraged the Scots to settle Northern Ireland. For example, John ffulton was in County Donegal, Northern Ireland in 1630. Check out the following for information and resources regarding the history, settlement, and genealogy of Northern Ireland, including a subsequent period known as the Cromwellian plantation. http://members.aol.com/Manus/ulsterref.html Under Documents and Records on the above page, go to The Muster Roll of the County of Donnagall 1630 A.D. 3. Dear George, Thank you for reminding me of the Jane Fulton/Robert Caldwell family in Noble Co OH.. I overlooked the series of creeks that could possible tie Marietta, Washington Co to Caldwell, Noble Co. And the time-frame is definietely the same. Thanks, Roberta *********************************************************************** "Caldwell, George R." <grcaldwell@cambridgeoh.com> wites on 27 Feb 1999: Roberta, To add another twist to this story, lets don't forget Jane Fulton, born in 1769 came from Chester Co., Pa. to Washington Co., Marietta, Ohio, with her husband Robert Caldwell, born 1762, in the year 1795. Robert a Rev Soldier, acquired land from the Marietta Land Office (600 acres) to go north of the settlement of Marietta and protect it from the Indians. In 1803, he came north of Marietta and settled upon the tract of land on the East Fork Of Duck Creek, now known as Caldwell, Noble County, Ohio. I am seventh generation of Robert and Jane. Anyone having a connection to either of them, i would like to contact. Thanks George Robert Caldwell

    3. Reference: Linda Smith <prestonkid@aol.com> note dated 23 Feb 1999 regarding Subject: FULTON, David - Washington Cty., Ohio Dear Linda, I am enclosing information on two different Fulton groups in the area you are studying. It may give you some leads for further exploration. You mention the following: David FULTON b: 1823 Ohio, d: April 14, 1863 Pt. Pleasant, Ohio, married Johanna HOSKINS b: 1830 Ohio,m: December 31, 1848. I could not find Pt. Pleasant, Ohio, but do see Point Pleasant West Virginia. Where is Point Pleasant, Ohio ? In the Fulton discussion list archives, there is a note dated 2 Apr 1997 that quotes from The Gallia Co. Ohio --People in History to 1980 that was published in 1980 by the Gallia County Historical Society. The article quoted was submitted by Dorothy Fulton Reiger. No address given. It describes the Fultons were among the first settlers of the Shenandoah Valley on Moffats Creek and Calf Pasture River. They worshiped at the old New Providence Church. Nine Children were mentioned in the will The oldest son, James, emigrated to the Ohio Valley in 1806 with his wife and four sons and a daughter. He had fought in the famous Dunmore War at Point Pleasant, West Virginia, on October 10, 1774. James Fulton was awarded a farm in the Ohio Valley for himself and each of his four sons, William, John, Thomas and James, Jr. upon payment of a small sum for the "patent" of deed at the land office in Marietta. James Fulton was born 15 April 1752 and died 15 July 1839 at the age of 87. He was in his 23rd year at the battle of Point Pleasant. His first wife was a Matthews of Virginia. After her death, he married a woman named Fowler from near Point Pleasant. I notice that Gallia County is south of Washington County, but the Ohio River allows easy transportation between them. The father of your David may have been part of the migration to obtain cheap land in Ohio. Have you done a thorough search of the land records associated with your David Fulton ? Here is another Fulton family in the area your are researching. >From the Fulton Family Letter, 1986 page 70: "James Robert Fulton came from Ireland in 1792, time of the great rebellion. James left Ireland with his wife and four children: William, Elizabeth, Eleanor, and Sarah Elizabeth. They left Ireland at 3 A.M. on an American vessel urged by agents from Pennsylvania who offered land for homes to the Irish. His wife was ill when they left Ireland and died at sea, but was buried at some port. The Fulton family first settled and lived in Pennsylvania. They came to Marietta, Ohio on horseback in 1800. It is said the James Fulton was a large landowner, kept many tenants and that he was a great Bible reader. James Fulton is buried in Mound Cemetery in Marietta, Ohio and his tombstone reads: 'James Fulton a native of County Tyronne Ireland who departed this life Sept. 21, 1807 aged 55 years.' The son William, born to James Fulton and wife in Ireland was 9 years old when they came to America in 1792. In 1802 William Fulton married Eliza Frazer (1774-1848) who was of Scotch descent. It is not known whether they were married in Pennsylvania or Ohio. William Fulton was a merchant and bought and sold cattle and horses. He would take stock and merchandise from Marietta, Ohio to Baltimore over the National Road, bringing back goods to sell in Marietta. He also ran a stage when there was demand for it. William Fulton died July 29, 1823 at age 40. He left behind his wife and four daughters, thus taking the name FULTON with him. This author is very anxious to learn more about James Robert Fulton, William Fulton and their families. Just where in Pennsylvania did they originally settle? It has been said that in 1800 a cousin Andrew Fulton came from Pennsylvania to visit the Marietta, Ohio Fultons. Who are these Pennsylvania relatives ? If you know the answer to these questions, please write to Janet C. Silvester, 335 Shannon Ct., Ft Walton Beach, FL 32548." Hal Phillips from Scottsdale, AZ <phillip@goodnet.com> is a cousin of Janet Silvester and is also studying this family. His source notes that were gleaned from notes of Emily E. Thorniley, page 77 of "Early Settlers of King County, Long Island, New York" mention that James Robert Fulton was a covenanter. After his wife died, he married a Mrs. Mintten. When they arrived in Marietta on horseback in 1800, they boarded at a Tavern, old Stanley House on Ohio Street. Do you know what religion your David Fulton followed ? According to this information, there are no FULTONs in this direct line. But if Andrew Fulton from PA visited the family in Ohio in 1800, perhaps there were other collateral FULTONS in the area that these researchers have not yet discovered and which may give roots to your David. It is so important to study these collateral lines and the entire community to try to find the clues we need. Roberta R. Unluckily not too much written stuff. Dear Tom, Fortunately you have been writing down the information you have that describes your roots so that you can pass on this legacy to future generations. If it is not written, it gets lost or distorted after just a few decades. > You could be right about the William Fulton - Unknown McClaren > connection and I have heard that one of the "girls" went to Australia > and was not heard of again. You may want to try posting queries on lists associated with Quebec or to study the ships passenger list to ports in Canada. > I had not heard of the town of Six Mile Cross in any of our history > but it sounds promising. Yes, I agree. You may want to check the LDS IGI for possible leads. Look for naming conventions similar to those in your branches. But more importantly, I would suggest more research in Belmont, Ohio. For example, have you checked any naturalization records in Ohio. On my mother's line we found an entry in the Court of Common Pleas in Sullivan Co, NY, for our ancestor's intent to apply for naturalization in 1807. It listed the date and port of entry, the ship, and the village and county in Ireland. Also there were two other entries for the same surname on the same day, which later proved to be his brothers. Unfortunatley these records were unindexed, so it took days of reading faded old-style handwriting. But after awhile you can begin to scan the entries more quickly. And staying focused on skimming is the hard part because sometimes these court records on other families have such interesting stories to tell that you want to read all the details. > By the way, we will be having a local reunion this summer, near the > end of July Have a wonderful time !!! Keep up the great work sharing your information. Roberta R. (Fulton) Hirth Harriman, New York 10926 Fulton web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/fulton.htm

I was intrigued by the story of how Helen, one of your relatives, on the trip to the west in 1873 recalls the childhood memory of the crunch of grashoppers under wagon wheels on the journey from Winnipeg to Portage La Prairie, Canada. Perhaps the reason they came through Minnesota to reach Manitoba from Ontario was to use water transportation part of the way. I have looked through your web pages, but unfortunately I cannot find a link between our lines. My James Fulton b 1739 in Dalkeith/Musselburg Scotland came to America in 1782/1783 and finally settled in Bethel, Sullivan Co, NY. The roots of your family seems to be in Roxburgh, Scotland. I have not made any connection with my James Fulton in Dalkeith to any Fultons in Roxburgh. I wish I could. Regarding your Nellie Gertrude Fulton's descendants in the Martinez line who settle in Fernwood, Sullivan Co, NY in the 1920's, I do not think there is any connection to my Fultons in Bethel. By then railroad transportation enabled folks to move much more easily. But if I find anything about them, I will let you know. Good Luck in your research, Roberta R.
