    3. "If you were sitting at my desk what would be your next step? - Many Thanks and Cheers. John M." This is a fascinating thread I have a couple of questions Is there in fact a difference in actual numbers notwithstanding two different totals being advised? Does FTM and AMT count differently and/or is there a counting bug in one or both? They both could be wrong! If there is a real difference how to find the difference? If I had the problem I would export my FTM file index of indivuals report as a csv file I would download my AMT into a new FTM file and do the same thing Then I would open both csv files into Excel in adjacent columns and do some arranging and comparing This should A. determine if in fact a real difference; and B. Identify the differences. Note the term differences I don't think you can necessarily say the lower number file simply missing people It may be that the missing people are different people You can probably do the same thing in Acrobat which allows you to compare two PDF files And I think there is a GEDCOM COMPARE program around that compares two GEDCOM files https://sites.google.com/site/gedcomviewcompare/ It claims that it can "Creation of new GEDCOM datasets comprising either the difference (i.e. the persons missing in one of the two files) or the union (persons missing AND persons available in both files)". Really doesn't matter which you use, so long as it provides and answer Once you have identified the real differences (if there are real differences) you can then investigate as to the reasons The other thing that can be useful if you have two files to compare is run surname reports for both John D -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John Maynard Sent: Thursday, 23 January 2014 2:04 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] Problems with deletions and number count At 04:33 PM 22-01-14 -0500, Fred & Marie wrote: >I am still using FTM 2012 and have 120,801 people and still adding to >this number when I have a chance. It's a pain and every time I do this I have to contend with 'Leaf Hints' on individuals that have been dealt with before. I might give it a try if nothing else works ... but in the meanwhile ... Today I decided to check things out, using my Test Tree. I have 100 people on this Tree. Through merges and deletions I trimmed it down to 91 people at FTM-2014, but the online Ancestry Tree still showed 100 people. There was no indication at the Sync Log that any deletions were made. When I trimmed down my online Ancestry Tree the Sync Long showed the deletions. I now have an FTM database of 90 people, but 95 people counted on the online Ancestry Tree. I'm looking to see where the errors are. So what gives? - Where does the fault lie? Not in the Trees. I uninstalled it and re-installed FTM-2014. I compacted and repacked the Test Tree. While this speeded things up. re. TreeSync, it hasn't cured the number count problem. So ... I decided to build a new Test Tree (on FTM-2014 and at Ancestry), beginning with my family, etc. etc. and adding record hints from Ancestry. Some duplicate people showed up, but after running the 'Duplicate People' wizard, managed to sort them out. I'd TreeSync periodically and *Voila!* everything is working perfectly! - Of course, this is a small tree of 52 people. But at least it tells me something: (a.) The problem is in the Tree at FTM-2014, or (b.) The problem is in the Tree at Ancestry. If you were sitting at my desk what would be your next step? - Many Thanks and Cheers. John M.

    3. Hi John. You've given me some great ideas, but mind you my main project has 96,800+ files! Nevertheless, I'll take your suggestions on board if other options don't work. I mentioned that I was getting a mismatch on my Test Tree. As the list was much smaller (95 at people Ancestry vs. 89 people at FTM). I decided to open the Ancestry List in a window side-by-side with my FTM-Tree. That way I could manually do a number count and see which people weren't being reported, or find any duplicates. This will be the Tree I will be playing with, if I decide to take up your suggestions below. Another thing I'm doing right now is restoring my main Tree from a backup file that I did on Sunday last. This was before I installed FTM-2014 and removed FTM-2012. I compacted the new Tree twice, and am now doing a scan for duplicates. After that, I'll send it up to a new Ancestry Tree, and from there test whether the deletion/number count issue repeats itself. My flag that something was wrong was when I did a TreeSync after merging (or deleting) people. The TreeSync log showed me additions-changes-but no deletions were about to be made from FTM-2014 to my Ancestry Tree. The TreeSync handled deletions from the Ancestry Tree without a hitch. I'll keep you posted. The 'Match People' process will be taking a few hours, given the number of folks I have in the Tree. I'm trusting that the 64-bit process in FTM-2014 and Windows will speed things along. Fingers Crossed. Many Thanks and Cheers.
