It started off in DOS, without GEDCOM support, but by the mid-90's was was made compatible for DOS and Windows (with GEDCOM support). So it's been around for quite awhile. Through corporate mergers and clever marketing, it became a popular program for its simplicity. Some would say in those days "too simplistic". There weren't many choices except to enter data in a lousy interface that provided few options. Some of the corporations (Broderbund, Mattel, Learning Company and finally Genealogy.com) had ended up with other programs including Ultimate Family Tree, which in the late 90's was regarded the Rolls Royce of Genealogy Programs. In the early 2000's, Family Origins, Generations (Reunion for Windows), Roots-Family Gathering-Ultimate Family Tree were all discontinued in favour of FTM. That was then. What was a bad product in the 90's ... FTM has become the Mercedes Benz of the 2010's. A history of FTM's (and Ancestry's) development may be found at: Wikipedia-Ancestry.Com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancestry.com Scroll down to Family Tree Maker and you'll get a potted history. Under FTM Version History, press "show" for more information on past versions. I've been told that FTM-2014 for Windows and FTM-Mac 3, are nearly identical to each other ... a big plus for Mac users, who have been lagging behind the Windows editions. I was responding to BJ's comment: "Also go through your Comment/Location field and ensure you insert a semicolon (;) between the comment and the actual place or location name. If the field only contains a comment e.g. many Occupation facts, place a semicolon after the data in the field. " I was trying to clarify which character should be used to separate comments from locations. I thought it was the (/) not the (;). I would hate for someone to go to all the work making an incorrect change to their file. But maybe I'm wrong. John M wrote I've been told that FTM-2014 for Windows and FTM-Mac 3, are nearly identical to each other ... a big plus for Mac users, who have been lagging behind the Windows editions. John A review of FTM Mac 3 was written up in the February GUM newsletter It is nearly parity in features with FTM 2014, and despite still being only 32-bit, is still significantly faster than FTM 2014 (64-bit) on the same computer The lack of resource hungry .NET and certain CAB files in the Windows version not required in the Mac version is responsible for this The other great thing is now that database used in both versions is the same, so FTM 2014 can open a file created on FTMM3 and vice versa Bye- bye the arcane File Migration Utility (cheers) Also the new common database seems to be even more robust that the ones used previously All good news John D
