Bruce, The Mac Version and FTM2012 are two DIFFERENT programs with a different set of features. Bottom line answer to your question, I think, is that "it can't be done" the way you want to do it. Descendant Charts will, probably, be always be an issue. My question is, Where are you going to get this Chart PRINTED? I did a rather simple Descendant Chart with 4 generations but had a third party print it. I created it in Family Tree Maker, sent my file to that company and it came out great. So, once again . . . I have a tree that has about 100 individuals that consists of a single couple (Samuel and his wife) and their descendants as far as the first half of the 20th century. When printed on paper, it is spread over 5 or 6 sheets, taped together. I have had several copies printed, taped, and distributed. But it's really a nuisance, and I tell myself "there's gotta be a better way!" It occurred to me that Samuel had 6 children. So I might be able to print 6 trees, each on a single sheet of standard 8.5"x12" paper--each consisting of Samuel + childX + childX's descendants for X=1,2,3,4,5,6. To do this, I need to copy each of the 6 sub-trees, and print them separately. But I don't want to re-enter by hand the basic genealogical facts for 100 people. So . . . There has to be a way to copy, one at a time, the sub-trees for Samuel and his 6 children, and their descendants. But I failed when I tried to juggle two trees at a time. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Or perhaps tell me where to find something logically identical in the Archives?
Russ Many thanks... I have a Mac (used mostly for image processing + email + a family-history project I've been working on for 10+ years--no FTM stuff there) and a laptop (Windows 7) running FTM - 2012. I just got confused--probably because I was using the Mac to write my plea for help. I assume that, even on the laptop, "it can't be done" probably remains your judgment. Even if that's correct, it's helpful; I'm stubborn enough that, otherwise, I might try to succeed for several days. So you have saved me time and effort. My original 5/6-page tree was printed by Staples. It was a little too long for the machine they had, but they worked around that to my satisfaction. They produced a dozen copies originally, and a few more at a later time. I found their work to be satisfactory. I see that John Donaldson has suggested using Family Tree Factory; I'll probably try that later. Finally --- Since "it can't be done" I think I'll just get a new master (to include new info--like recent deaths) then print a copy and cut it into the 6 sub-trees. That will lead to jagged edges, but I probably could then scan the 6 sections to ordinary paper (maybe slightly re-sized) and I'll have what I want. Thanks for your response; it helped me a lot. Bruce. When I said it cant be done, is only based on YOUR hardware, mostly printer. John illustrated to PDF technology limitation. As I mentioned, I did get mine printed, as did John. I used Family Chart Masters https://familychartmasters.com/ They did a great job. So, in fact it CAN Be done, its just that someone, with the right equipment has to do it for you. In my case, I created the chart the way I wanted it, sent my file to them, and they printed it. Start of finish about a week. FTM has size limits of about 5 metres when it comes to one page PDF files of charts If you want a big descendant chart on one piece of paper (in AU the largest we can get is 50 metres) is to use a program called Family Tree Factory http://www.family-tree-factory.com/ Looking at the site just now it seems to be in some form of administration Also worth considering is Charting Companion by Progeny John D -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of H R Worthington Sent: Thursday, 9 January 2014 12:58 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] copy a sub-tree from a tree Bruce, The Mac Version and FTM2012 are two DIFFERENT programs with a different set of features.
