Allie, I use the File > Backup command and then specify the location where I want the backup to go. There are 3 options (FTM 2012 and 2014 at least): (1) Removable device (2) Working Directory (Documents\Family Tree Maker) (3) Custom Directory I would use (1) for your external hard drive. Make sure to have all the little boxes ticked for Media, Historical Events, Web Favourites, and Allow restored file to resume syncing. It's also prudent to compact the file regularly.
