No need to buy FTM 2014 to do this but personally I like FTM 2014 the best of all. Now as to your questions. I'll try to be more explicit but please forgive me if I over simplify as I don't know your level of expertise with the program. Remember to make a backup of your file before you begin. 1. With FTM 2012 open using the tree in question. Go to the People work area and select an individual in the main tree. Normally the main tree involves the Home person but it can be anyone within the main tree. 2. Click on Publish. 3. Click on Charts 4. Double Click on Extended Family Chart 5. I suggest you tailor what is displayed on the chart by Clicking on the option - Items to include. This is the first icon at the top of the right panel. Hover the cursor over the icon to see the title. 6. A dialog box opens which allows to you select what you want to include in the place. I suggest you remove the check mark next to source. If you've never used this before, it is probably set to Include: Name, Birth, Marriage and Death dates. This will probably be enough to let you identify the individuals in the trees. Click OK to return the the Preview work area. 7. Now if you will look at the panel on the right, you will see three check boxes. Place a check mark in the middle one - Include all individuals. I would also remove the check mark next to the first option - Center tree on page as this will make it easier to view the chart to find the different branches. As you make changes in the options, the chart will begin generating. Ignore it and simply continue making the changes I described. 8. Let the chart generate. This may take some time depending upon the number of people in the data base. 9. I suggest you display the chart at about 50% of its size (option found in the upper left corner just beneath the chart title, Extended Family Chart Preview. This will let you see more of the chart in a single window. 10. Begin scrolling down the chart. You will see different generation levels in the main tree but you will eventually begin to see other separate trees. 11. You can normally identify them by their isolation. They will display on the left of the chart. They will not have any connecting lines to the trees above. It is really difficult to see but alternating trees have a slight variation in the back ground. I really which it were more distinct. I was looking for it and missed it the first five times I looked at it. 12. Once you have identified a tree that you want removed, Click on anyone in that tree. The box around the selected person will change to blue. 13. Click the right mouse button. A list of options will pop-up. 14. Select "Person and all Relations" ( the seventh option down in the list). Now all individuals in that tree is selected as indicated by the blue box around each. 15. Place the cursor over one person in the tree and again click the right mouse button. 16. Click the "Delete from tree" option from the list. Another list of options will be displayed. Click on the top option, "Selected Persons". This will delete everyone who has a blue box so ensure only the individuals in the one tree are selected. 17. You can repeat steps 10 through 16 to eliminate all unwanted trees. If you want to export the selected individuals rather than delete them, Use the "Export" option in lieu of the "Delete" option. Hope this helps. BJ This has been a long day, and I can't say much now (have some basketball to watch!). But I wanted you to know that your more detailed instructions have enabled me to delete 110 "islands" from my database today. With a moderately large database this has consumed hours of work. So I'm tired, but very happy with what you have helped me to learn. My best guess is that I probably have at least several more hundreds to delete (and one critical "island" to export). I suspect I may have another week's work on this, but it will be worth it. And I did order FTM 2014, by the way--thought it might be a bit faster than my present FTM 2012.
