I hesitated to mention that in my earlier post so as to not confuse Pat. Perhaps you can walk him/her through it. I would definitely first: 1) save all files as they are, and COPY to somewhere other than c:\ drive (I use dropbox) 2) then convert and save all files as gedcoms, and COPY to somewhere other than c:\ drive (dropbox) That way you have 2 sets of identical files. If the files on the Dell get corrupted you can COPY them back from your safe saving place. 3) install Windows XP mode 4) shutdown/restart, try v16 and see if it runs better under the XP mode. If not: 5) uninstall v16/shutdown/restart/reinstall, try again with the files on the Dell 6) If that doesn't work MY last resort would be to buy/beg/borrow/steal another machine with Windows XP only and install v16 from disk, COPY the good files from the safe place. Again, I use dropbox At home I use my HP Windows 7 machine and save to a folder called _Family Files_ on my desktop AND to dropbox "in the sky" as I call it. On the road, I use a little HP Win XP machine, COPY FROM dropbox "in the sky", work on it, COPY TO dropbox "in the sky". Then, when back home, I COPY the saved fresh file FROM dropbox "in the sky" back to the _Family Files_ folder. I've actually worked on the file at 35,000 feet "IN the sky" coming back from somewhere :) I sure hope this helps. BTW, dropbox is simple, and free. I love it. Randy
