    3. With the release of FTM 2014, you can do this a bit easier. This is because FTM 2014 can restore a link between an AMT and a computer file which has been restored using the FTM 2014 Backup feature. If I'm going to be on the road for a week or longer and I wanted to work on my Genealogy while I was not the road, I would do it this way. 1. On the desktop, I would use FTM 2014 to backup my file. Ensure you use all of the options for the backup: Include Media Files, Historical events, Web Favorites and Allow restored file to resume syncing. 2. Copy the backup file (file extension .FTMB) to the laptop. 3. Install FTM 2014 on the laptop. 4. Use the laptop to restore the backup file to the laptop. During the restore, ensure you tell it to restore the syncing using this file. It is important to realize that when you restore this backup to a file with syncing capability, the older file on the Desktop will NO longer be synced to the AMT. 5. Now use the laptop for all updating and inputting for the file. Continue to sync the file to the AMT while you are on your trip. 6. When you return from your trip and intend to start using your Desktop again, you must FIRST backup the file on the laptop. Again use all of the options especially to allow the restored file to resume syncing. 7. Copy the backup file to the Desktop. 8. At this time you have an important decision to make. Specifically do you intend to use the same file name and the same folder you were using before you went on your trip. If you do, then on the Desktop before doing anything else, open FTM 2014 and use it to delete the old FTM file on the Desktop. Remember this file has outdated information AND is no longer linked to the AMT tree. You want to delete it so you can use the same FTM file name. 9. Using FTM 2014 to restore the backup file (the one you just created using the Laptop). Again make sure you restore telling FTM to restore the sync link also. You should restore the file to the same name of your old file and in the same location. At this point, the file on the Desktop is synced to the AMT and the Laptop file will no longer be synced to the AMT. This works because FTM 2014 lets the user restore syncing from the restored file. Unfortunately, syncing is still limited between one AMT and one FTM File on one computer. Although I haven't used this technique to transfer the file and sync capability from one computer to another, I have used it to transfer the from one hard disk to another. I hope this is understandable. If you have any questions or concerns, please write to the list. 3. Ken, BJ's steps should work as he suggests. There is one issue to consider, and it may not be an issue for you. You MAY have to re-invite anyone to your Ancestry Member Trees that you have invited to your first AMT.  There may be some clean up of AMTs and Family Files on your computers so that you KNOW which is THE ONE FILE that is Syncing with ONE AMT. 3. Great instructions BJ. I was fine until your second message that laid out the sequential steps with desktop & laptop. I will study that a bit more. After my first read I concluded nothing in the first set of instructions was changed by the second set. Would you please confirm that? I do have to say for many novice users this will be a real hassle and a negative for using two computers. Fortunately, I've been around them since programming was performed by generating binary code and throwing switches for the 1s and 0s. My problem now is remembering, so I cut and pasted your instructions into a PDF file and will put them into my Companion Guide. Which reminds me, someone like you who always provides clear succinct instructions should write a book about some of the more advanced work arounds for users. Or FTM should contract someone to do that. I say contract it, because I would rather see them using their resources to advance the software. You and Russ have excellent grasps of the software's more subtle processes. No offense Russ, but BJ writes great instructions.
