Hi John, on January 24th, you wrote: <snip> Now when FTM 2008 was developed the developers decided to correct the "hack" in FTM and added the description field with is the correct place for the comment. But unless you entered your Facts and locations correctly in FTM up to version 16, i.e. Fact/ or Comment/Location when you import your information into FTM 2008 or above, you get Facts and locations mixed in the Places list You can fix these as a once off exercise using the Resolve Place Name Tool in FTM Places or individually right click on them and resolve them. It takes awhile but it is worth it as you have a proper field for descriptions and very consistent Places It took me about a weekend to fix my database with about 6,000 names and I had used the slash delimiter since version 7 for Places but not Facts. It is not worth trying to fix them in FTM 16 before importation, the tools in FTM 2008/09/10/11/12/14 Mac/2/3 are much better. She has several trees in the 20,000 range and, needless to say, did not use the dash delineator to separate her comments from location. You say this can be done in 2014 as a "once off" - how?? I have one of her trees loaded in my 2014 and did a test run using the "Resolve All Place Names" under "Tools". The program identified 6,600 places, but nowhere is there an option to separate the comment part from the location. I could not see an option to do it manually either. You say "individually right click on them" - where? How do you create a list that is "right-clickable"? My thanks to you, or anyone who can help. Lorraine, in Kingston
Lorraine I have replied off list to you as I have added some articles that I have written on the subject since 2009 plus a few screen shots John D -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Derk & Lorraine Sherren Sent: Wednesday, 26 February 2014 5:43 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] v.16 Comment/Location in FTM 2014 Hi John, on January 24th, you wrote: <snip> Now when FTM 2008 was developed the developers decided to correct the "hack" in FTM and added the description field with is the correct place for the comment.
