Dear Forum, I currently have on my PC an I.7 processor, 16 Gb ram, 64 bit operating system Win 7 ultimate running FTM2014 version 22.0.0.1260 reading the recent comments about the update I am concerned about my software’s behaviour. Since the update last week I have found on start-up of 2014 it states the software did not close properly and informs me that I should compact the file, ok I compact the file several times but it will not go to zero. After three or four consecutive compacts it reports it has compacted the file to 0.01, it will not go to zero. Is this normal as I seem to recall when this has come up in the past the answer was keep compacting until zero was reached. Since the update last week this has occurred on three or four occasions when opening up 2014, annoying but at least I can use the software after this process. Another point I would like to ask is it possible to show in the family tree view all the ancestors or descendants, as my family view has lots of boxes next to persons showing that there are further ancestors, descendants, if possible I would like all these shown without having to open as necessary, i.e. is there a setting that needs applying in the options or elsewhere. Any helpful comments will be most appreciated as always and thanks to all the forum members for useful tips. Regards, Mike Thacker.

Your operating system is identical to mine, except that I have an i5 processor instead of an i7. Re. compacting with 2012 to get to zero you've got to exit your Tree and compact while the Tree is closed. (This is what technicians at Ancestry Support recommended to me. With 2014, I can compact to zero while my Tree is open (it is a very large Tree). It compacts to zero the second time around. That's that. I've heard that 2014 is much more stable than 2012 and compacting the Tree isn't as serious an issue as it was with 2012 or previous versions of FTM. So I've been told. I hope this helps. If you find 2014 slowing down or exiting suddenly it might be while you are doing a lot of entries or changes ... I can experience this from time to time. If so, may I suggest that you go off-line and perhaps things will speed along, rather than limp along. Only a thought here. Good luck and God bless.
