Book preview button at the lower left opens a new window, so even if the FTM window is visible, font buttons won't work. As Russ said, the Aa button should work. It's a tad confusing, because when you are creating the book, the center panel work area says "index preview" or "Title page preview" even though you aren't in the "preview book" mode.
