A man showed up at our local Genealogy Club with FTM problem and I could not fix his issue. He had FTM 2012 version 21.0.723 on a Windows 7 laptop. He had 485 people in his tree of which two people had this problem described below. Problem: In real life the husband had two marriages, one with no children and the other marriage had three children. However, both marriages in FTM had the three children attached to them and could not be eliminated from the real childless marriage. There were no doubles of the children in the People Index. Fix Trial: 1) Ran Compact File and reduced file size by 54% ... obvious to me some linking problems might exist. Problem remained. 2) Detached a child from the real childless family. That appeared to fix the problem for that child except the child was now "an island". 3) Deleted the "island child" but it also deleted the child in the "correct family". 4) Added the child back into the "correct family", but it added the child to both families. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
I would try this first: Select one of the "misplaced" children. Go to the People > Person workspace and select the Relationship tab. Verify the relationships of this child to its parents, and that there is no relationship to the stepmother. Do the same for each of the other children. It might also help to check the relationship tab for the father and both wives also. Correct as needed. If the children are shown as being the step-children of the childless wife, they will show up as you describe. If the above doesn't work, come back to the list and we'll give it another whack. Ken, WHERE are you seeing the 3 children where there shouldn't be any children? To resolve this, DETACH the 3 Children from the Wrong parent.
