Thanks BJ, I will try that first. All my place names have the address included so changing it to the "standard" version, besides taking me a while, may be something more complex for the program than was ever tested. I haven't got round to uploading my main file yet so that will not be a problem. I have uploaded and linked one branch so I can learn about it before doing my main file. Russ also said that looking in the FTM-TECH archives I would find an excellent step by step description on reinstalling, etc. written by you. I have tried to find it without success. It would be useful to read that if I find myself having to reinstall so would you be so kind as to tell me when you wrote it or give me a link to it. The article simply hasn't been updated to reflect the latest release. I'm running under Windows 8.1 Pro and am not experiencing the problem you describe. I suspect it may be a problem with your file - not with the individuals or facts but perhaps with the Place name table. FTM 2014 is much better at correcting file problems by compacting the file, I think there may be some tables which are not checked or corrected. Before doing all of the uninstall and reinstall process, I think I would try one other process just to see whether it corrects the problem or not. Here is what I would do. 1. Create a new FTM file by inserting one individual. I would use a fictitious name which would be easily recognized; e.g. Test Person. 2. Save the new file and ensure it is open in FTM. 3. Click File, Merge. No need to create a backup of the new file so click NO. 4. Select the problem file and merge it into the new file. This will move everything into the new file. 5. You can now go to the fictitious individual; e.g. Test Person and delete him/her from the file. 6. Now try the process of cleaning up the Place names and see if you have any problems/crashes. If you no longer have any crashes, you can 1. Delete the old file 2. Rename the new file to the old file's name. 7. The only problem with this technique is any AMT synched to the old file is no longer valid. So you would need to Delete the AMT. 8. Now you need to upload the new tree to a new AMT so they will be synched. If this does not correct the problem, then you can continue with the suggested procedures of uninstalling and reinstalling FTM 2014. Good luck.
