    1. [FTM-TECH] The Great Debate
    2. Derk & Lorraine Sherren via
    3. I know I'm a bit late joining this debate, but I'd like to add my "wish list of things I would like to see improved in FTM 2014 and the AMT: All Charts - it's the box size that bugs me. If I "unclick" keep boxes the same size, the HEIGHT becomes variable but the width stays the same for all boxes based on the "maximum width" I set. This makes for a very large chart when it doesn't need to be. I have actually had to go back to my v.16 to create Descendant Charts because of this. Relationship Chart - This chart is a great addition. However, it does not include spouses. If I want a chart that goes from my 5th great grandparents to me, my only work-around is to build a new tree showing just that line. And then I'm faced with the problem above, but at least I have both grandparents. I would like to see an option to "include spouses" when creating direct descendant lines (like the old Direct Descendant Chart in v 16). Title Field - Yes, that field is available. With many people by the same name in my tree, I need their title to identify which one I'm looking for. However - if I use the "Title" field, and add it to the index so it shows, the name is sorted by the TITLE. The Index treats the title as the first name! I end up having to put the title in the Suffix field (in brackets) so I can see it but not mess up the Index. That completely defeats the purpose of the field. I would like to see that field set on "show but ignore" in the Index. Syncing to Ancestry... Notes - The associates at Ancestry explained to me that the programmers assumed" we ALL use these as RESEARCH notes and therefore have no need to share them. So ALL notes are treated as "Private" unless we want to share them with those who are collaborating with us on the tree, i.e. an Editor. Unfortunately - for us - that primary assumption is simply wrong. Good grief that is why we have a SEPARATE "Research Notes" tab in FTM 2014. I, for one put obituaries, bios, and all sundry on individual people in their "notes". I'm sure we all do. What Ancestry wants us to do is create a "Story" instead which would be visible to all. The problem with that is that it is not readily visible to ME. My tree (69,890 people) is right now set to Private on Ancestry (indexed), and my only workaround re the notes is to have those few I have invited to be Editors. Yes, they COULD make changes but I have made them promise not to. :). It is the only way they can see my copious notes. Sometimes the programmers need to stop second-guessing us. Marriage field notes - Did you know any notes you place in the Marriage field don't even show up in Ancestry! They are just not there. I use the notes in the Marriage field to put wedding announcements, anniversary notices, family histories (shared by both), etc. That's fine for me - but no one else will see them, unless I print out a Genie Report. This is also the main reason if I run into a major problem with my FTM tree, I can't just download another copy from Ancestry. I lose all my marriage notes. What I don't understand is, any pictures I put in the Marriage Album sync to my Ancestry tree - why can't the notes?? Marriage date field - In FTM you can put "never married" in the date field so you, and anyone you share the tree with, know not to go looking for a spouse. This information is included in the Genie Report. Great idea! Here's what happens when you sync your tree. When you go to the person's profile page, the Marriage field shows "Marriage to Unknown" - talk about the complete opposite to what you are trying to say! AKA field - This one annoys me the greatest. I firmly believe that AKAs do not belong in the Name Fields. In my Workspace in FTM (the right column) I have put the field right up at the top, and use it all the time for nicknames, etc. It is enough that I have to put the Title in the Suffix field, without including all the AKAs. The problem is the AMT. When you look at the profile page, the programmers apparently do not think the AKA field is important - it's buried down in the timeline BELOW all the "dated" events No one would think or bother to scroll down to find a nickname for a person so owners of trees are forced to resort to putting the AKA in quotes in the Name Field, defeating the purpose of the AKA entirely. We can create reports in FTM that will do that for us. I would like to see the AKA field in the AMT moved to the header, right below the Name. Then people will start using it for what it is. There, those are my wishes. Lorraine Sherren, UE Kingston, Ontario
