    3. Christine, Please go to Help, Online Help Center and enter CRASH in the key word search box. Select the Windows7 Knowledge Base article and follow the directions. Thanks BJ. So I thought I would resolve mine from the place name index as that would be quicker. But when I have resolved 5 or 6 the program freezes. A window pops up saying "Family Tree Maker 2014 has stopped working. Windows will close the program and notify you when the problem is resolved" (or something very similar). So far it has happened twice and when I reopen the program of course it has lost my changes. Yes I could go back to the backup I made after 3 changes but I can't, practically, backup after every 3 changes. (And Windows hasn't notified me of any resolution.) I did compact my file after each crash. I am using Windows7. I have noticed that with FTM open I am using 64% of my physical memory. Could the problem be there and what do I do about it given that FTM is the largest slice of that. But it is only using 180 MB, the rest of what I can see using about 360 MB and I have 2.75 GB RAM. So a lot seems to be going to other things and I don't know how to look at that or even if I need to. I have plenty of disc space. Any help gratefully received. 3. Thanks Russ, So far, apart from panicking every 5 words, I have some questions. "Family Tree Maker error message or stopped working" would seem applicable but when I open it up it first says "When opening Family Tree Maker I receive an error message. " and then 'After opening Family Tree Maker did you receive an error message stating either "Family Tree Maker has encountered an error and needs to close" or "Family Tree Maker has stopped working"?' That was not my message and it is not clear from the above whether it is on opening FTM or later. So I am not sure if it applies. But it implies that .1345 is the latest version. Incidentally I fairly recently purchased and installed FTM 2014, applied some patches and now have version 22.0.0.1345. I have not uninstalled it at any time. But in the main article it says that .1243 is the latest 64 bit version. So which is the latest? I would have thought .1345 was later than .1243. It is going to take me some considerable time to read, attempt to understand, and decide what I need to do. I don't want to do things that are unnecessary and find myself in the same position. And it appeared to be working fine apart from resolving place names. 3. Version 20.0.01345 is the latest version. The article simply hasn't been updated to reflect the latest release. I'm running under Windows 8.1 Pro and am not experiencing the problem you describe. I suspect it may be a problem with your file - not with the individuals or facts but perhaps with the Place name table. FTM 2014 is much better at correcting file problems by compacting the file, I think there may be some tables which are not checked or corrected. Before doing all of the uninstall and reinstall process, I think I would try one other process just to see whether it corrects the problem or not. Here is what I would do. 1. Create a new FTM file by inserting one individual. I would use a fictitious name which would be easily recognized; e.g. Test Person. 2. Save the new file and ensure it is open in FTM. 3. Click File, Merge. No need to create a backup of the new file so click NO. 4. Select the problem file and merge it into the new file. This will move everything into the new file. 5. You can now go to the fictitious individual; e.g. Test Person and delete him/her from the file. 6. Now try the process of cleaning up the Place names and see if you have any problems/crashes. If you no longer have any crashes, you can 1. Delete the old file 2. Rename the new file to the old file's name. 7. The only problem with this technique is any AMT synched to the old file is no longer valid. So you would need to Delete the AMT. 8. Now you need to upload the new tree to a new AMT so they will be synched. If this does not correct the problem, then you can continue with the suggested procedures of uninstalling and reinstalling FTM 2014. Good luck.
