Regarding the posts on unknown names.... If you add the word "Unknown" or things like "husband of John Smith" it will screw up the search results when Ancestry (or family search) is doing searches to identify potential matches to the record (i.e. "tips"). I don't like leaving it blank and use --?-- for any unknown names. This helps with the sorting process. All names that have a first name and no last name will appear at the top of the name list with the following format: --?--, Jane --?--, Dorothy Anna I also use it for missing first names: Richardson, --?-- And in cases where I don't know either name. For example, if a document says "the couple had three children." --?--, --?-- I can easily figure out who the person is by looking at the other family members. It also looks decent in reports. It's a system that's worked well for me. PS: You can do a "find and replace" to replace the word "Unknown" with "--?--". Debbie
