    3. Debbie, Same technique for each. However, I would NOT include the word "township", but that's up to you. Plymouth Colony would NOT be resolved, because the USA hadn't been established then, right? Thanks for sharing that. Can you provide advice on the following: 1. Laughlinton, Ligonier Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, USA I like to capture the Township name in addition to the town because sometimes I only have the township and it's helpful to have as much information as possible. Do I put the "township" (Ligonier Township) or the "town" (Laughlinton) in the "Place Details (historical name, address, church, cemetery, etc.)" field? 1B: Present day Long Island, NY: USA >> New York >> Suffolk County >> Town of Brookhaven >> Bellport 2. For people born "at sea" or on a specific vessel? For example, "he was born at sea aboard the SS Kennedy." 3. Hesse-Cassel (later known as Prussia, Germany) 4. Plymouth Colony in Colonial America I appreciate any tips you can offer! Debbie

    3. Debbie and Russ, How hard is it to Locate where the colony was and pin it? Then it is done for the next time you use it. I always use Township and County, if known, for two reasons. Not infrequently there are towns with the same names as Townships and/or Counties within a state that are dozens or even hundreds of miles apart. This helps others find where I'm talking about. Knowing the Township also is valuable in finding rural cemeteries. Jay Thompson just an old genealogy nut too tough to crack. 3. Russ,Just to clarify, I understand the "technique" (the how) so my question is more about the details of the process --- what I'm putting in each field (the what).  Questions 1 & 1B: When going through the process of resolving the places, do I put the "township" or the "town" in the historic place field?  This version seems more correct:Place Detail: Ligonier Township Place Name: Laughlinton, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, USA Place Detail: Brookhaven Town Place Name: Bellport, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, USA 2. I'm still not sure what to do with the "at sea" places..... ... 5. And, one more to add to the mix: -- How about census records where you have both the street address and the ward.  I am typically more interested in the street address than I am the ward.  But, sometimes a street address winds up in different wards over time and I prefer not to have multiple places for the same street address: 1234 Main Street, Ward 10, Elmhurst, Queens, NY, USA1234 Main Street, Ward 8, Elmhurst, Queens, NY, USA What I was doing is adding the Ward to the "description" field: DATE: 1910Place Detail: --- Place Name: 1234 Main Street, Elmhurst, Queens, NY, USADESCRIPTION: Ward 10: The household included John Smith (40), his wife Abigail (38) and his son Jack (19). DATE: 1920Place Detail: --- Place Name: 1234 Main Street, Elmhurst, Queens, NY, USADESCRIPTION: Ward 8: The household included John Smith (50) and his wife Abigail (48). TIADebbie
