thanks... will play with it ... but probably not until next weekend Brian -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of John Yates Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2011 8:41 PM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] FTM 2011 and SAR applications Brian, Here is what I've been doing on Mac OS X. Ancestry.com -> Military Collection -> Search and when have a "hit" it brings up an Ancestry summary page. I save this page to a file first by: Print(in the browser) -> PDF -> Save as PDF Just name the file and it goes to disk. Then click on View Original Image This takes you to the first image of your successful search which is usually two pages of an application. Right Click (Ctrl-Click on a Mac) -> Save Image As and name it in the pop up box and it saves it as a jpg file. Then, to the right of GO there are left and right navigation arrows. Click on the Right arrow to take you to the next image page in the collection. This will likely be the remaining two pages of the same application. Then Right Click -> Save Image (as above). That should be a complete application. But click on the Right arrow once again and you should see the next application. Sometimes it will be another SAR Application for the SAME Patriot. If it is, grab this and the next image (4 pages), and see if there may be another one after it. The saved jpg's seem to be small files. But the first pdf may be over 1 MB. If so, on my Mac, I open the pdf with Preview (the default app for this usually), and this program allows one to save a file as gif, jpg, pdf, tif, png and a couple others. Save it as a jpg and a box pops up with a slide bar for quality. Feel free to drag it far to the left (it tells you the size of the file you will be saving as you slide the bar) and save it. (no need to keep it over 1 MB. Usually 200 to 400 kB is fine for printing and reading. If you want, keep the original 1 MB pdf around in case you need the resolution to read illegible handwriting. I'm sure all this can be done on Windows. But perhaps not so easily and maybe not with built in OS components as on the Mac. I love Mac OS X!
