The combined family display is a new feature of FTM 2012. It displays all of the children of an individual across multiple spouses. To see it, go to the Family tab in the middle lower pane which shows the children of the current couple, you will see an icon which looks like lines crossing each other. Clicking that toggles the combined list of children on and off. You cannot sort the children by birth dates while the combined list is selected. As I recall the children will be displayed thusly. Children will be displayed as they are sorted within each family. Children of the selected family are displayed first, followed by the children of the other families.
