Yes, that's how it works. It requires a lot of testing and experimenting on your part to see how you want to handle this. One thing I did was remove all my parish register and census images from my FTM tree before I uploaded to a linked (syncronised) member tree on Ancestry. There are copyright issues with these; the parish register images from FamilySearch aren't to be published on another site and is just one example. Not everyone has gone to these lengths and it is up to the individual whether you feel comfortable with the copyrighted images out there. All-in-all, it's a good feature. There are still some teething problems but I haven't found anything that precludes me using the feature.
