    3. Hello All, Received my FTM 2012, in the mail on Wednesday. Couldn't get home and download it fast enough. Which was seamless. I kept looking for a place to change the file location, when I either passed it, (OK, so I'm a senior) or it wasn't clear to me. Anyway, I was so pleased to see, as others have stated, it was a separate file from my FTM 16. Most basic tasks are intuitive to learn, however, I must share, I just click on everything clickable, and piece it together mentally, which eventually makes sense to me, to perform whatever basic function I happen to click on, emphasis on basic. Was amazed at all the new functions, just love the media function, I now have dozens of censes' and photos attached to whatever person I'm working on. While waiting for the manual to get here, when I would get stuck, (like real late at night, when I should have been asleep) I would go back over the FTM-TECH posts, and that would help. The only thing I still miss, so far, is the family page from my FTM 16 program. I know, I'll get use to the new family page in the FTM 2012, in time. To the person who asked about the 1 year back up service, with Ancestry.com, I mentioned in an earlier post. When I couldn't find the feature on the web site, I sent Ancestry.com an email. The answer stated they didn't know what I was talking about, go figure, and with the new version of FTM 2012, they didn't offer the back up service, because of the sync feature. The back up service is for prior versions of FTM. I still have the 1 year back up service for my FTM 16, it still works very nicely, which I tested after I got the email answer from Ancestry. Looking forward to learning the more complex features of the FTM 2012. I have to laugh here, I didn't realize how bored I had gotten with my FTM 16!! Cindy Low Millsboro, DE

You should find that when you start the FTM 2012, you needed to update it. The current version is now 452. You would find that in Help, About. Since you mentioned waiting for your manual, you should be advised that there is a PDF of said manual installed with 2012. You can read it at your own pace, or print a page or two if you wish. There is another book that was for 2011 instead, but seems a good resource. ==================== USER GUIDE - Beyond The Basics, A Guide For Advanced Users of Family Tree Maker Family Tree Maker for PC | Family Tree Maker for Mac Printed User Guide for FTM for PC | Printed User Guide for FTM for Mac Printed Guide - Beyond the Basics for FTM FTM Technical Help BOOK - Beyond The Basics, A Guide For Advanced Users of Family Tree Maker By Tana L. 3. Welcome to 2012 Cynthia. Before you dip your toes into the syncing water you need to make a decision which is going to be your primary database, Ancestry or Family Tree Maker. After messing around with it I've decided to stick with FTM as the ONLY place where I make updates. Then I sync it up to Ancestry and the data is there in my member tree and is available to help in searching. This way, when something happens to the link between the 2 trees (and it will, at some time or another) all I have to do is unlink the tree on Ancestry, rename my FTM tree and upload to a new tree. After that I then delete the previously linked tree on Ancestry. 1. [FTM-TECH] Ancestry tree, FTM Tree and FTM 2012

    3. > I think I'm going to do the same thing, use my FTM as my primary databse, > sounds easier. I have several friends who have an online tree with Ancestry.com from time before FTM 2012 was released. The dilemma they faced was how to deal with changes and additions made by other people of the Ancestry Tree if they had not incorporated each and every one of those changes or additions into their Family Tree Maker tree. The further the AT goes away from matching the FTMT the more difficult it would be, IMHO. Anyone care o jump in and share their experiences about this? One of the nice features of Ancestry.com and FTM 2012 - a tip of the hat to Russ for pointing it out to me - is that the owner of a file on Ancestry and with FTM 2012, one can go to the Plan workspace, New Tree, Download fro Ancestry and see trees you have online. If they are NOT linked, then you can DOWNLOAD said tree from Ancestry to your computer. As best I can tell, this downloads one's AT to the computer and it can become a FTMT. It is most likely NOT identical to one's FTMT that was already on the computer. If one downloads a .ftm with media, then one COULD cross check the media files from the AT to what your previously existing FTMT media file contains. I acknowledge that naming the newly downloaded FTMT has to be done with care and likewise, using multiple trees, especially with similar names and most of the people matching can be confusing. I think of this as an opportunity to 'backup' the tree which is on Ancestry.com Comments and suggestions folks??? John Okerson Memphis, TN
