    2. What are you going to do with this size of records? Print them out and donate it? Be interested what other genealogist will do with what they have got. Robert L. You also have not stated how large the FTM file itself is, and how much media you have linked to it. 131,651 people, 52,078 marriages, 255,433 KB file size, 163 generations, 17,053 unique surnames, 15,575 places, 14,352 sources, 716 media in 340 MB, 1,097,227 records, 535,245 facts, 52,294 families, 83,873 children, 247,709 source references and 7,661 something - went by too fast to catch during compaction. The separate folder for Media is obvious. > As for the 400,000 and 800,000 person files, good luck. What other > versions of FTM have you had these files opened with? FTM 16 does perfectly well with all three of them, under Windows 7 Professional SP1, under Virtual PC I haven't tried them all, and of course under Windows XP SP3. > The memory manager within Windows 7 is different than it is in any of the earlier versions. Generally it will do very well in managing the memory, providing all of the open programs are well written. It will gobble up as much memory as it can for the active program, and give up some when another program needs some more. I am NOT a programmer! FTM 2012 seems to be a 32 bit program as indicated by 'FTM.exe *32' as shown in Windows Task Manager, Processes, Image Name. When it hits about 1.2M of memory in use, the program regularly crashes without warning. I have 115 processes going just now, using 6% of the CPU and 24% total of the physical memory. A sampling since I don't see an easy way to capture that list - AdAware, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photo Downloader, Advanced System Care, Catalyst Control Center (for my video card), Google Chrome, Copernic Desktop Search, Explorer, Flux, Garmin Lifetime Updater, Blue Stacks, IMF, IPoint, iTunes, USB 3.0 monitor, Live Cam, Power DVD, RealTek Audio Manager, Sandbox, Windows Desktop Gadgets, Smart Defrag, Open Office, Smart RAM, Task Manager, TeaTimer, Ask Updater, Wizmouse, Windows Live Mail. > Just waiting is NOT going to give you any extra RAM, you need to close some of those not in use programs. Can you provide a list of these programs that you normally have open at the same time as FTM? What you say makes sense, BUT it is NOT what happens. In fact, it is as if I am going beyond what FTM expects. I expect to flip back and forth between Web Search and Family View repeatedly without ANY memory being abandoned on either side. The memory usage by FT< displayed goes up and down with NO input from me. I have spent many DAYS trying to link this tree, and FTM goes up to 1.02M usage while Ancestry is importing into its file - THAT makes no sense - then drops to about 100K, then a few minutes later is over 900K again. That FTM 2012 appears to use but ONE processor thread is a design choice apparently. I sure would like to see FTM consume the CPU with user concurrence, much like Adobe's product do. I want to be able to use multiple processors (and threads) and the resources I bring to the hardware side of the table to optimize the software's performance. I don't want to make this a one person discussion, but do think it important to find a solution. Help would be appreciated. Printing it out is a very unlikely choice for me due to size constraints if nothing else. I enjoy posting the info I have online on a FREE site and sharing with others who are interested or those I find interesting. I have asked folks older than myself what THEY intend to do with their data. Most intend to donate it to a local facility with hopes it would be useful to others yet many fear that their work will dumped on the curbside in an abandoned format - say 5 1/4" 360K floppy disks in today's world.
