    3. Thanks to John Okerson and BJ........I now have two options to experiment with, to eliminate the note section when I go to sync/unload my family tree. I always love having lots of options! Which only means, if I can't get it to work one way, I'll just try it another way! On item number 6 below, it sounds like I literally put in "@n" in find and eplace, then replace it with "__", just so I'm clear, it sounds like I will eed to do that with each and every "note section" to be replaced?? Right? hat's correct. You can probably use the Find and Replace All option o it shouldn't take too long. On item number 11 below, you say in part, "upload the file as an unlinked ree". Now, if I choose to sync this new file, that no longer has the otes.......will I be able to continue to add to the same file, then sync it to ncestry, and include any NEW notes of my choice? f you "sync" the two trees, the link will be between the tree in ncestry.com (without notes) and the FTM 2012 file (without notes). es, you can make any changes to either of the trees and sync will apply hose changes to the other tree. The key word is sync, in other words, he information is synchronized but the two trees are different so some hings are slightly different. In other words they are not exact uplicates of each other. Thanks...... I have thought of a work around which will do as you want. 1. Using FTM (I used FTM 2012), select File, Export. 2. Identify the individuals to be included in the exported file. 3. Select GEDCOM as the type of export file to be created. 4. Create the GEDCOM file. Now you have a GEDCOM file which has all of your notes. Not what you want so you have to take a few more steps. 5. Use a Word processor application to open the GED file. OpenOffice recognizes it as a text file and will open it even though it still has the GED file extension. If your word processor will not do this, use Windows explorer to rename the file by changing the .GED to .TXT. 6. Use the word processor's Find and Replace. You want to search for @N - this is part of an identifier in the GED which identifies Notes. You want to change it to something else. I replaced it with two underscores, __. This creates a keyword which is not used within GEDCOM standards. 7. Once you have replaced all instances of @N, save the file back to a file with the file extension, .GED. 8. You could now upload that to Ancestry.com and hope that it works. I preferred to import it back into FTM 2012 so I could ensure I got everything. 9. In FTM 2012, create a new file using the GEDCOM file. 0. Review the Import Log. You will see an error for every note. This technique removes all subordinate information in the note record. This includes the contents of the note. 1. Once you are satisfied with the result, you can use FTM 2012 to upload the file as an unlinked tree. Or you can return to Ancestry.com and use its option to upload a GEDCOM file. It seems like a lot of work but it really is relatively easy. I want to be able to upload a gedcom without the "notes", can this be done ith FTM 2012?? I tried uploading two gedcom's this week, for the first time, and all my otes howed up. If FTM 2012 doesn't allow a gedcom upload excluding the "note ection", can someone advise of a program that will allow me to do an upload inus the note section. I used both FTM 16 and Family Tree Builder, neither of hose programs have an option to NOT include the note section. Right now, I have 14,000 plus people in my tree, my best guess would be at east half have extensive notes. So, it's not even practical for me to go back nd take them out at this point. ********************************* ist information page ttp://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Software/FTM-TECH.html Online Support for Family Tree Maker ersion 16 and earlier ttp://pastftm.custhelp.com/ Version 2008 - 2011 ttp://ftm.custhelp.com/ ------------------------------- o unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to FTM-TECH-request@rootsweb.com ith the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of he message
