The only way I have found to solve the problem is never, ever use the PNA as construed by FTM. Always put the way it is entered on the census. Those who aren't interested in the historical name for a community, will say you are making work for yourself. Those who look at census will see entries that have village, city, county state, they will also see Ancestry listings that have city but not village in index, or village, but not city in index or will have an ED listed but NO DESCRIPTION, in which case, it generally does NOT show up in the index. In People>Tools>Options>Names,Dates,Places, I am in the process of going through and resolving each place name. My preference is to not have "USA" shown and I have it so entered in the Place Options. I also have the "Check place authority when entering place names" checked. I also choose to enter Township and County in the place name. If I resolve a place name, the "USA" goes away and the PNA accepts the Township and County. The next time I start to enter that place name, the correct suggested place name has the "USA" at the end and, if I accept it, the "USA" is there AND it starts a new entry in the PNA AND is unresolved! Also if I don't accept the suggestion and spell out the entire name, the PNA will still put the "USA" on the end and call it unresolved. Now it is not on my list of favorite things to do to enter a hundred new people and then spend a week resolving the place names (I have about 4000 with 37500 people). If Ancestry is going to say you can leave off the "USA", then the suggestor should leave it off. And if they are going to say the PNA will accept those suffixes then it should accept them. Your six pack of beer (or wine) is enroute! BJ has said that the data within the PNA cannot be altered. While the PNA accepts county names with and with out the word county, doing without USA is not acceptable. I spent MANY days working on my list of places - started with over 30,000 and ended up below 15,000 of which about 3K were unresolved. IMHO, IF you wish to use names in the style you describe, you can manually change each name within your file, and then instruct the PNA to ignore it! That creates a place name without a FLAG. Only YOU can decide if such an endeavor is worthwhile! Best of luck and let me know how my choice of grape and vintage suited you?
