It took me about a weekend to resolve them when I converted from FTM 16 to FTM 2008. Of course you don't have to do it in one sitting, work through it but be consistent in your database. I had used the slash delimiter correctly in FTM 16 and earlier (it goes back actually to version 7) so my Descriptions were not mixed up with my Places when I converted. I was surprised how inconsistent my place names were and I found the process of cleaning them up very satisfying. "Melbourne, Victoria Australia" is different to "Melbourne" or "Melbourne Australia" even although the place is physically the same. It is easy to get lazy when entering places, and of course if you use any web merging, etc, then place names could be anything and may need attention. The replace function is priceless here And of course if you have your places consistent, the custom report/ export filter works as it should.... an added bonus. I don't use any abbreviations in my place list preferring the full name. Everyone in Australia would know where "Tassie" is but if you sent that place to somewhere else it may not be recognized. (It is actually Tasmania, Australia, an island State south of the Australian continent much beloved by the Brits as a penal settlement, but now a lovely holiday island) I also spell out all the USA states even although I know the abbreviations. "WA" may mean Washington State to FTM, but here it is the state of Western Australia. Paying attention to this detail makes FTM work as designed John D -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Okerson Sent: Wednesday, 16 November 2011 11:34 AM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] Place name list, FTM 2012 > I like BJ have all my Place names resolved so there are no tags when scrolling the place list This has another priceless advantage I am about 4,500 unresolved places from your status. My goal is to get there, and I work on it diligently. I know that I could resolve ALL, but that would be giving up, eh?
