John: I believe there is one rather large difference between Mozy and Carbonite. Carbonite offers UNLIMITED backup storage for its annual/monthly fee whereas Mozy charges a set fee for 50 GB and 125 GB plans - and then each 20 GB of space above the plan limit is charged at $2 per month. I have 400 GB's backed up via Carbonite and it has saved my hind quarters on several occasions. I also can't live without Dropbox and keep my family tree files stored there as I use several devices to update my files. -Bob -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Bayle Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2011 9:01 PM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: [FTM-TECH] Mozy and Carbonite On the thread about about Dropbox, the question of Mozy and Carbonite came up. My understanding is that Mozy and Carbonite are both online backup utilities. They are designed for a single use to upload his/her files there and then in the event of some data loss being able to restore the files from Mozy/ Carbonite. They are not designed to do file sharing, as in, I load my data (pix, spreadsheet, FTM file) up to them and then somebody else can download and use the files that I uploaded. Nor are they designed as a kind of file synching facility as in I upload data from my phone to the site and then can synch up with my desktop computer and have the correct most up to date data on my smart phone and on my desktop computer. Mozy and Carbonite work essentially the same way, though there may be some differences. As I've been contemplating using one of these services I'd be very interested in hearing about the experiences of others with either of them. And of course if I've misstated anything above, I'd welcome some gentle correction. jr Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. ---Gen.
