Is that correct or is it wishful thinking? Jay Thompson just an old genealogy nut too tough to crack.

    1. [FTM-TECH] PNA frustration
    2. Thompson Jay
    3. Help, I either need enlightenment or something to relieve frustration. In People>Tools>Options>Names,Dates,Places, I am in the process of going through and resolving each place name. My preference is to not have "USA" shown and I have it so entered in the Place Options. I also have the "Check place authority when entering place names" checked. I also choose to enter Township and County in the place name. If I resolve a place name, the "USA" goes away and the PNA accepts the Township and County. The next time I start to enter that place name, the correct suggested place name has the "USA" at the end and, if I accept it, the "USA" is there AND it starts a new entry in the PNA AND is unresolved! Also if I don't accept the suggestion and spell out the entire name, the PNA will still put the "USA" on the end and call it unresolved. Now it is not on my list of favorite things to do to enter a hundred new people and then spend a week resolving the place names (I have about 4000 with 37500 people). If Ancestry is going to say you can leave off the "USA", then the suggestor should leave it off. And if they are going to say the PNA will accept those suffixes then it should accept them. 3. I'm not sure whether anyone has answered your question satisfactorily or not. I just tested the adding of new names with the following observations. When you are inputting a place in the Place Name field, you are presented with a drop down list of place names which may or may not fit your needs. 1. If the place name has never been entered in your data base, FTM 2012 offers the nearest suggestions from the Place Name Authority data base. The list may expand or reduce as you input more characters in the name. 2. If the place name has been entered before and is in you list of Place Names, the drop down list will display names of places currently in your data base as well as suggestions from the PNA. 3. If you have selected the option to not display a country, in your case USA, the names in the list which are from the PNA will show the USA. 4. If you enter a Place name including the subdivision type such as County, Parish, Township, Borough, etc., the Place Name will be flagged as not resolved. However, after the place name has been resolved, you may insert one of these subdivision types and it will not be marked as not resolved. 5. If you have place names in your data base which are almost identical to a resolved place name but which are not resolved, they will be shown in the drop down list. If you select it, the new entry will not be resolved. 6. When you resolve a Place Name, you receive a dialog box to confirm the replacement. There are two options - Change All entries or Change only this entry (the default option). If you elect to Change all, the non-resolved Place Name will no longer be displayed in the drop down list. If you elect to Change only this entry, the non-resolved Place Name will continue to be displayed in the drop down list because other facts are still using it. As you are entering the place name, review the list of suggested names. Select the place name that matches. If the Place name is not resolved, Resolve it. Once it is Resolved, you can enter County and the Place Name will continue to be resolved. Hope this helps.
